Anqing picked up the phone and shouted, "Ziya, your call... you can also check it on your phone." Hearing her mother's voice, Ziya furrowed her brows slightly, put down the mouse, and hurried to the living room.
She took the phone and held it to her ear, giving Anqing a salute with a playful smile. "Hello..."
It seemed the other party was waiting for something. Upon hearing Ziya's voice, they responded, "Hey, what are you up to?" Sun Meng's hoarse voice indicated that her throat was not in good shape.
"Sounds like you caught a cold! Did that someone give it to you?" Ziya teased while absentmindedly playing with the phone cord.
"Come on, don't mess with my head. Who are we to each other? We broke up a long time ago..." Sun Meng's tone carried a hint of sadness.
"Oops, sorry! I thought you two were about to get married. How did it end up like this..." Ziya felt strange but didn't want to pry further; asking more would only lead to deeper hurt, like pouring salt on someone else's wound.
"Let's cut to the chase! This is a long-distance call, Miss." Sun Meng quickly changed the subject, not wanting to dwell on sad matters.
"Uh... go ahead! What do you need?"
Anqing had been busy in the kitchen and walked over, deliberately putting her ear close to Ziya's phone to eavesdrop. She shouted into the phone, "Mengmeng! Why haven't I seen you for so long?"
"Anqing, you..." Ziya complained anxiously.
"Godmother, I miss you so much." Sun Meng thought Ziya had handed the phone to Anqing and replied cheerfully.
"Hmph! Sorry, I'm not your godmother! If you don't speak up soon, I'm hanging up!" Ziya pretended to be impatient.
"What are you two playing at? One moment it's you, then it's godmother's voice," Sun Meng said in confusion.
"Dear, let's keep it brief! I still have manuscripts to organize!" Ziya said with a hint of annoyance.
"Uh... so here's the thing. I got assigned a task to provide psychological counseling for a mental patient in D City’s C Town. But this patient is a reclusive woman who can be quite troublesome... Oh, and I should tell you that there's a mysterious swamp in her backyard... I saw a woman in black there two days ago..."
"Hello... hello..." Ziya looked at the receiver in confusion. She had just been engrossed in what she was hearing when suddenly the line went dead. D City? It seemed like a wealthy place; if Sun Meng struck gold with that widow and got a hefty sum from her out of goodwill, haha! This trip could be quite profitable for her.
Ziya put down the phone, intending to continue working on her manuscript. However, Sun Meng's strange behavior puzzled her; why did she have to say such nonsensical things during a long-distance call? What was she trying to convey?
After some fruitless speculation, Ziya decided it would be better to call her back and find out. With that thought in mind, she turned around, bent down, and picked up the phone again, dialing the number Sun Meng had just called from.
The line was filled with soft instrumental music before a woman's voice came through. "Hello?"
Ziya quickly brought the receiver closer to her ear and replied, "Hello? May I ask who this is?"
The woman seemed taken aback for a moment before responding, "I'm the housekeeper here. Do you need something?"
Ziya was stunned and hurriedly said into the receiver, "I'm looking for the person who just called me."
The woman appeared confused and replied, "Called you? We didn't make any calls just now; you must have dialed the wrong number."
With that, she hung up, leaving Ziya rolling her eyes in frustration. She silently cursed Sun Meng for her scatterbrained behavior—how could anyone tolerate this? No wonder Liang Chao left her; she might as well remain a lifelong old maid! Despite her irritation, Ziya reluctantly picked up the phone again to try calling once more. If it went wrong again, she would ignore her for good.
Just then, the phone rang again. Ziya quickly answered it, eager to ask, "Hello! Why did you hang up on me, housekeeper?"
Sun Meng was baffled by Ziya's question and thought she had dialed the wrong number. But upon checking again, she realized it was indeed Ziya's home phone! She shouted into the receiver, "Ziya, are you out of your mind? When did I become a housekeeper? The line got crossed earlier, so I had no choice but to hang up. I'm calling you back right now!"
"Ah... do you have a housekeeper at your place?" Ziya asked hurriedly.
"Nope, it's just me here. This old woman can't get along with anyone! I'm sweating bullets here. I wanted to call you over to help me out; we could gather some new material together. What do you think?"
Sun Meng seemed confused; there had clearly been a housekeeper earlier. Ziya’s thoughts were jumbled as she tried to piece together what was happening.
Sun Meng cheerfully replied, "Great! That's my girl! I'll meet you at the town square."
Ziya blew a kiss into the receiver and said playfully, "Alright, darling! If no one loves you, let me love you! Kisses... Hahaha!"
Ziya's antics made Sun Meng fume on the other end of the line. She snapped back into the receiver, "You’re ridiculous! Don’t get too cocky or you might end up embarrassing yourself!"
“Damn it, I’m so busy, I can’t chat with you right now.” Ziya hung up the phone and continued to work on her manuscript.
Anqing sat quietly in her room, staring at a heart-shaped jade pendant in her palm. It was a birthday gift from Yuan Ye. Though he was no longer around, this pendant often stirred the emotions she had buried deep within her heart.
If it weren't for Yuan Ye's insistence on going abroad, she might have been with him. But after that incident... She sighed. Liu Haoming was her lifesaver and the love she owed in this lifetime. Live for the living, and remember the dead! Everything is just fleeting...
That evening, Ziya shared surprising news with her parents: she was going to D City to interview a wealthy widow who had been living alone for many years. It was said that this widow had a vast fortune, and Ziya was curious about why she had no heirs.
“Are you sure you want to go?” Liu Haoming put down his chopsticks and looked intently at his daughter.
“Absolutely,” Ziya nodded firmly.
Anqing glanced at her husband and then at her daughter, assessing the situation. Seeing no sparks flying, she smiled to herself and continued eating.
“Go ahead! Just be careful out there; it’s not like home. You know what I mean,” Liu Haoming said with a slight smile. He supported his daughter's desire to venture out; she was like a grown bird whose wings were finally strong enough to fly away from her parents' protection.
However, Anqing felt uneasy. Ziya had never traveled far before; who knew what kind of environment awaited her? Despite her concerns, she hesitated to voice them. She feared Liu Haoming's piercing gaze; he often compared her to a greenhouse while their daughter was the flower within it...
Thinking about going far away, Ziya deliberately stayed in the living room to keep her parents company while they watched TV. It wasn't until her eyelids grew heavy that she returned to her bedroom. She took out her suitcase and packed the clothes she needed, adding a small cloth doll into the bag. Feeling somewhat fatigued, she lay back on her bed and lazily closed her eyes for a quick nap.
