Sun Meng rushed to the News Agency after receiving Ziya's call, only to be stopped by police officers at the entrance. A large crowd had gathered outside, with some people tiptoeing and straining to catch a glimpse of what was happening inside the courtyard. They attempted to peer over the red barricade, eager to see the situation within the building. Others whispered quietly among themselves from a distance. Even the vehicles on the road seemed to want to stop and watch, causing what was usually a clear route to become congested. Traffic officers were busy directing the stalled cars, trying their best to clear the blocked roads.
As Sun Meng arrived, her anxious gaze swept around, intensifying her worry. She approached one of the officers and said, "Please let me in! My friend is inside; here’s my student ID." The officer took her ID, glanced at it, and smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, but this is a restricted area. No one is allowed in or out without permission. You might want to come back later; the situation inside should be resolved soon."
"What happened inside?" she pressed.
"I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that information," the officer replied sternly, showing no signs of yielding. Sun Meng stepped back reluctantly and overheard snippets of conversation from the crowd.
"Those ghosts inside the building are terrifying; they'll scare you so much that you'll lose your sense of judgment and jump off," one person said.
"Is it a female ghost or a male ghost? That's intense!" another chimed in.
"I don't know; I've never seen one," came a shrugging reply.
"If it's a female ghost, I'd take her home as my wife, hahaha!" someone joked.
"Boring," Sun Meng muttered under her breath. She leaned against a nearby counter where a few women were also discussing something. Eagerly, she leaned in slightly and perked up her ears to listen.
"I heard this building is haunted; it started when they were constructing it. Shh... haven't you heard? A woman died on the construction site; she was apparently a Cleaner..." One woman was interrupted by another who tugged at her sleeve and subtly gestured with her chin. Sun Meng quickly pretended to be casually looking around, masking her earlier interest in their conversation.
The first woman continued to scrutinize her with fox-like eyes. "Heh! I'm just here looking for my friend; these police are blocking my way." Sun Meng felt a bit awkward and hurriedly explained that she hadn't been eavesdropping on purpose.
"Does your friend work here?" The woman’s eyes widened as she asked in a hushed tone. The other women displayed expressions of shock, as if they had seen a Demon Leader.
"Is this for real? You all..."
"Miss, you should tell your friend to leave this place quickly! Last year around this time, there was a similar incident in this building. Two security guards saw a female ghost during their midnight patrol..."
"Alright, enough of that. Let's go home and cook." Sun Meng was engrossed in the story when suddenly another woman pulled the storyteller away.
"Time to go home. There's no show today; we'll just have to check the news tomorrow." People began to disperse, grumbling among themselves. Sun Meng watched as the crowd gradually thinned out, took out her phone to check the time, and pressed the call button for Ziya, but the phone informed her that the user was unavailable.
"Tch!" she muttered under her breath, realizing it must be the police's order for all staff to turn off their phones. She made her way back to the entrance, where it seemed some police officers were coming out one after another, followed by most of them exiting. The red warning tape was also being removed along with the officers. She hurried toward the door, where the courtyard was filled with noise. A refined-looking man seemed to be saying something in the lobby.
On the ground of the inner courtyard, a pool of dried blood still retained its vivid color, shaped into a twisted zigzag pattern. Sun Meng felt a chill run down her spine and quickly moved away from the bloodstain toward the lobby entrance. Ziya kept drinking water, seemingly trying to alleviate her anxiety; her stomach felt full, and she needed to use the restroom.
After leaving Liu's office, she headed toward the restroom down the corridor. At that moment, Sun Meng entered the lobby and looked around but couldn't find Ziya. A woman in an apple-green uniform carrying a bucket and cloth emerged from another hallway, and Sun Meng rushed over.
"Auntie, do you know someone named Fang Ziya?"
"I do. Are you looking for her?"
"Yes, I'm her friend."
"Uh... I haven't seen her. You might want to look for her yourself!" With that, Cleaner Aunt opened the glass partition door and headed toward the main entrance, seemingly going to clean up the bloodstains.
Ziya entered the restroom, which was already crowded with people. After half an hour of confinement earlier, everyone was desperate for relief; business was booming in there. After waiting for what felt like ages, she finally got into a stall, locked the door, and squatted down. Her legs felt weak as images of Liu falling from the window flashed through her mind. A strange cold breeze gently blew from behind her, prompting her to instinctively turn around and look back.
Ziya turned around and caught sight of Liu, who was standing behind her with a bloodied smile. "Ah... ah... ah..." she screamed, stumbling as she quickly pulled up her pants and stood up from her crouched position. With frantic hands, she pushed aside the crowd that had gathered to see what was happening. She hurried out of the restroom and into the hall, where Sun Meng spotted her immediately.
"Ziya, Ziya, wait for me..." Sun Meng called out as she rushed forward. To her surprise, Ziya seemed to ignore her completely, her face filled with terror, breathing heavily with wide eyes that were truly frightening.
