"I really am okay?" Ding Li was still shaken, the nightmare from a few minutes ago felt so real, so real that it made her think that Ye Chenfeng in front of her was also part of that dream.
Ye Chenfeng held her close, his lips pressing against her damp bangs.
"Your curse doesn't work."
Ding Li froze in shock, thinking to herself: How could it not work? Something happened to my mother; her death was terrifying, she looked so old, like an old woman. Her hands and face were wrinkled, her eye sockets sunken deep, filled with fear. In that moment of death, her eyes were fixed on the doorway, mouth half-open as if trying to scream but unable to make a sound. That expression of terror was frozen, her limbs hanging limply.
"Listen to me, you must forget what you shouldn't remember and those who have passed away; otherwise, you will be plagued by misfortune," Ye Chenfeng said earnestly, holding her tightly in his embrace, letting her feel his warmth and providing her with a sense of security.
It had to be said that Ye Chenfeng made Ding Li feel safe enough.
Ding Li recalled the dream she had earlier and still couldn't understand why her curse didn't work on her mother. If her curse didn't affect her mother, then the contract she made with the Ghost Granny wouldn't hold.
Ye Chenfeng was starving. After eating half-full from the noodles Ding Li cooked, he noticed she still looked troubled and took her cool hand in his. "Haven't figured it out yet?"
"Mm."
"The Ghost Granny is troubled by love, harboring resentment in her heart. Her obsession turned into malice, becoming an immortal spirit wandering the world. With the aid of dark magic, she transformed into an Evil Spirit that devours souls. Remember, she is troubled by love; your relationship with your mother is that of mother and daughter—there's no romantic element involved—so your curse is ineffective. The Ghost Granny won't come to take your soul."
Ding Li wiped away tears and sniffled softly. "So that's how it is."
Ye Chenfeng hugged her and joked, "But if you were to curse me, then it would be dangerous."
"I wouldn't do that. Even if you did something wrong to me, I wouldn't be foolish enough to exchange my soul."
"Well, even though Ghost Granny won't take your soul, I still want to catch her."
Ding Li was surprised. "She... comes and goes without a trace; she's not that easy to deal with."
"Don't worry, I have information about her." Ye Chenfeng took out a notebook, which belonged to Ye Feng. It contained details about Ghost Granny's hometown and records of the first time she surrendered a soul.
Ghost Granny's hometown was a small village called Zhanglin. Just as Ding Li said, Ghost Granny indeed appeared and disappeared without a trace. Ye Chenfeng had seen her parasitizing a Lao Liu tree in Evil Village, but that was only temporary. After she obtained Dan Xiangsheng's wife's soul, whether she would leave or not was irrelevant.
What mattered was finding Ghost Granny's original spirit.
As long as they found Ghost Granny's original spirit, all her curses would be easily broken.
That night was supposed to be the warmest and most romantic night for Ye Chenfeng and Ding Li in Evil Village, but it unknowingly became mixed with external factors. He suddenly worried about Dan Xiangsheng's current situation. Wasn't Ding Li's death part of his curse?
Ding Li felt shy and took the initiative to get closer to Ye Chenfeng for the first time. "Brother Feng, I..." Her face was flushed, her heart racing, and her words stumbled.
"What? Are you afraid of me... or afraid it will hurt the first time?"
"You go take a shower; I'll get ready." Ding Li said bashfully, lowering her head as she spoke to Ye Chenfeng.
"Alright, but I won't force you. I'm here to make things easier for you." As he spoke, Ye Chenfeng pulled out a shiny necklace with a heart-shaped pendant from his backpack. "Here, let me put this on you."
Ding Li bit her lip and nodded softly as she sat down obediently.
A slight chill brushed against her neck, where a beautiful necklace hung on her fair skin. Ye Chenfeng remarked appreciatively, "That necklace looks stunning on you."
Ding Li felt a surge of happiness inside her, and shyly pushed Ye Chenfeng towards the bathroom.
"Do you have that thing here?"
"What thing?"
"That thing."
Ding Li knew exactly what Ye Chenfeng was referring to. She bit her lip, her face turning crimson. Under his gaze, she let out a giggle, pushed him away, and dashed into another room. From behind the door, she called out, "There's none of that here; you can still tease me."
Hearing Ding Li say this, Ye Chenfeng's heart soared with joy. "Yay..."
The clear water flowed through the valley, passing by a place where billions of soldiers were stationed. With a mischievous grin, he said, "Later, I'll take you to set up camp; I promise it'll be an unforgettable experience for her."
Ding Li grew anxious, rummaging through every drawer in the room but finding nothing she needed.
How could Su Mother and Su Dad not have thought to prepare something like that? But then again, they were past their childbearing years—what would they need it for?
After finishing his shower, Ye Chenfeng wrapped a towel around himself and searched for Ding Li.
"Lili, are you playing hide and seek with me?"
Ding Li sat in another room, her brow furrowed with worry. What if she was pregnant on the first try? She still needed to find a job, and if she had a child, how could she possibly secure employment?
Ye Chenfeng knocked on door after door.
As he reached for one handle, it opened on its own.
The room was shrouded in darkness, exuding an indescribable aura.
Ye Chenfeng stood at the threshold, his eyelids twitching uncontrollably. A sense of unease stirred deep within him. He took a step back and shouted, "Who are you?"
A strange voice emanated from within the room, sounding almost unreal. It was a whisper, as if something was trying to communicate with him.
Fearing for Ding Li's safety, Ye Chenfeng steeled himself, biting his fingertip and reciting an incantation. With a sharp sound, the eerie voice vanished, leaving behind a quiet and empty space.
Ding Li heard the commotion and rushed out to see Ye Chenfeng turning on the light as he entered the room.
"Ye Chenfeng."
"It's nothing. I'm just checking."
Ding Li seemed frightened by the room; she stood at the doorway, peering inside. In a hushed voice, she said to Ye Chenfeng, "I just got here today, but I feel like there's been some movement in this room. At first, I thought it was strange. Did you hear anything?"
"Nothing much, let's go out." Ye Chenfeng stepped out, his strong arm wrapping around Ding Li's slim waist. It felt good, but she seemed to have lost weight. "You've lost weight."
"Yeah."
"Did you find it?"
Ding Li's expression stiffened as she shook her head. "No."
"How about I sleep in another bedroom?"
Ding Li nestled against his chest and said, "No."
"Then tonight?"
"You can do whatever you want."
With Ding Li's words, Ye Chenfeng lifted her into his arms, gazing affectionately at her slightly haggard face and the lifelessness in her eyes. "You've suffered. Tonight, I'll be a gentleman."
"What do you want to... do?"
"I'll stay by your side and protect you until dawn."
Hearing Ye Chenfeng say this, Ding Li felt deeply moved. For a long time, she remained silent, wishing she could stay nestled in his embrace forever.
As they walked down the corridor, Ye Chenfeng noticed a square offering table in the corner of the living room to the south, with a statue of Guanyin displayed on it. Curiously, he asked, "Did Su Mother buy this? Does she worship Buddha too?"
Ding Li replied, "This Guanyin Statue has been here since I arrived. Su Mother instructed me to burn incense for it every day."
Ye Chenfeng gently set Ding Li down and focused his gaze on the Guanyin Statue.
The statue had red lips and white teeth, exuding a benevolent and dignified aura. Although it was made of pure white porcelain, it still radiated an ethereal grace. Under Ding Li's puzzled stare, he quickly approached and pulled out two long incense sticks from behind the statue. After lighting them, instead of placing them in the incense burner, he broke one in half. Strangely enough, as soon as the stick snapped, the smoke immediately ceased, and even the lit end extinguished. He then recited, "Taishang Laojun divides into three clear realms, Mahavairocana stabilizes the three souls. The heavens and earth combine into three fires; grant me the spiritual eye to perceive yin and yang, open..."
Ye Chenfeng slowly opened his eyes and was astonished to see a shadow swiftly moving away. This figure was particularly strange; it had a nose and eyes like an ordinary person but was colored in black and white.
"Did you have any strange nightmares before I came?" he asked.
"Yes, I dreamt that my parents were calling me home, but I ended up seeing a graveyard."
"How could that be?" Ye Chenfeng picked up the Guanyin Statue, bit his fingertip until it bled, and sprayed blood onto the statue. He raised it high, and before Ding Li could shout in surprise, he forcefully smashed the Guanyin Statue onto the ground.
Crash—The statue shattered.
"Does Su Mother understand dark arts? That can't be!" Ye Chenfeng couldn't comprehend why Su Mother would do such a thing. He took one last look around the room before grabbing Ding Li and heading to the master bedroom. "Stay here for a moment; I'll be right back."
If he wasn't mistaken, there was something wrong with the Guanyin Statue.
There was something sinister in this house that thrived solely on the incense Ding Li offered every day. This entity might be connected to Su Mother. Ding Li came here without realizing it; instead, she seemed to have played along with it. What was Su Mother thinking?
Ye Chenfeng couldn't understand why the seemingly kind and caring Su Mother would target Ding Li.
If he hadn't come, Ding Li would have really been in trouble waiting foolishly at school.
He took out the Ghost-Collecting Gourd and recited a spell. With a swift motion, a stream of black mist was sucked into the gourd.
Ye Chenfeng sealed the Ghost-Collecting Gourd with talisman paper, gently shook it, and said to the gourd, "No matter who you are, we'll talk later."
After dealing with the dirty things in the house, Ye Chenfeng finally felt tired.
He entered the bedroom, where Ding Li rushed over and hugged him tightly, unwilling to let go.
"Alright, let's sleep! We have things to do tomorrow."
"Will this affect your studies?" Ding Li asked this silly question. Ye Chenfeng smiled but didn't answer. He picked her up and placed her on the bed, kissing her forehead. As he tried to get up, Ding Li pulled him back. "Don't go, I'm... I'm scared."
"Do you really want to be together?" Ye Chenfeng was a man, a normal man. He needed passion, that rush that only men could feel. He held her petite body close and slowly leaned down.
The bedroom was filled with an ambiguous atmosphere as they merged together passionately.
"Brother Feng, if possible, I want to enter your body and be with you for a lifetime." Ding Li suddenly said something incredibly shocking from beneath him, startling Ye Chenfeng so much that his brows furrowed. He covered her mouth with his own, and another wave of passion erupted between them—an unrestrained explosion. Ding Li closed her eyes in satisfaction, deeply enjoying the wonderful moment.
