Chapter 408: The Prison Disaster
What the hell! No, that's not it. What am I supposed to do? The more I think about it, the more frustrated I become. Doubt creeps in as I wonder if they will listen to my explanation or if someone is manipulating them to make me a scapegoat.
You have to understand that places like that are rife with wrongful accusations and injustices. In a place where the law cannot reach, even if I had ten mouths, I wouldn't be able to clear my name. I felt a pang of regret for not heeding Gousi's advice to stay at his house until the storm blew over. But I couldn't just abandon Qin Jian's fate; I had no idea how he was doing.
With a bitter smile, I said, "Zhang Deputy Captain, you have to listen to me. There's more to this. I didn't kill her; she got what she deserved. I can assure you that I'm also a victim of deceit."
"Whether you're a victim of deceit or not will be investigated at the station. Don't entertain any crooked thoughts," Li Team interrupted us. He then pulled out a black cloth and, without caring whether I agreed or not, blindfolded me.
"What are you doing?" I felt an overwhelming sense of being taken hostage. These people seemed unfamiliar and didn't act like law enforcement; they felt more like bandits.
With my eyes covered and someone on each side holding me, I couldn't see anything outside the car window. The vehicle bounced along the road, making me feel increasingly drowsy.
Even though my mind was filled with questions, I tried to think positively. In our city, there are countless police stations and several precincts, but only one headquarters.
If luck was on my side and I ended up at the headquarters, perhaps there would be a glimmer of hope—especially if I encountered someone familiar.
After what felt like an eternity of bouncing around in the car, it finally came to a stop. Hands pulled me out, and when the black cloth was removed from my eyes, it took a moment for them to adjust. As I opened my eyes, I realized this place looked completely unfamiliar.
It didn’t resemble a precinct or police station; instead, it seemed like a remote mountainous area. At that moment, the person escorting me wore a smirk and greeted another individual who wasn’t in uniform but wore a belt and carried a two-section wooden baton, tapping it rhythmically against his palm.
This is bad; this place is neither a precinct nor a police station—it's more like I've fallen into a bandit’s den.
As expected, I was brought to an area overgrown with weeds and some dilapidated buildings nearby. It was only now that I truly realized how naive I'd been; these people were not police officers—they were impostors or perhaps involved in something else entirely.
Could they be part of an auxiliary force? The so-called auxiliary police might just be worse than civilian organizations posing as police. They could easily forge identification cards; their uniforms could be fake too, and their police cars might not even be real.
Behind these fakes, there must be someone pulling the strings.
The masked figures, dressed in fake uniforms, dared to commit murder and arson without a second thought. As I contemplated this, my heart plummeted into an abyss, continuously falling, and I had no idea when it would shatter upon hitting the ground.
"Move faster!" A furious shout jolted me, and I was shoved roughly again. Anger surged within me, ready to unleash a curse, but then I spotted someone standing at the door of the third house in a row. The silhouette was familiar; I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
I stared intently at him, yet he never turned back, as if a face behind him wore a smug grin, coldly watching me. Just as Zhang Deputy Captain pushed and shoved me toward the house, that person's phone rang—its urgent tone sounded like a death knell.
Behind him trailed a tall shadow that followed closely. He didn’t look at me as he answered the call and walked away; that shadow followed right behind him. It was definitely not his own shadow; after all, there was no sun at this moment, just a gloomy pallor—how could there be a shadow?
I snorted softly; it seemed this life wouldn’t last long. Unintentionally, a long-lost smile flickered across my face, but even that brief smile was noticed. Zhang Deputy Captain shot me a fierce glare. "What are you laughing at?"
I couldn’t be bothered to look at him as he yelled at me. They continued to push me into a dim confinement room of less than ten square meters.
"Kid, now that you're in our hands, let’s see how long you can keep laughing," Zhang Deputy Captain said with a toothy grin as he stripped off his uniform to reveal ordinary clothing underneath. I noticed others doing the same; once they shed their uniforms, they revealed sinister smiles and exchanged crude jokes while shoving each other around.
Then came a loud crash, plunging my world into darkness.
I crouched in the damp, dark room, feeling restless. All my belongings were left at Zhang Xian Clinic; I wondered if she would help collect them. Anxiety gnawed at me as I paced back and forth in the cramped space.
At that moment, I heard soft tapping sounds coming from the wall. It felt like a secret signal—was there someone on the other side? I thought bitterly about how I ended up here; it was unlikely I'd encounter any good people now. Who knew if those on the other side were deceiving me? At this point, what more could they do?
I pinpointed the source of the sound and bent my fingers to tap back on the wall: "Tap tap tap."
The person on the other side seemed excited upon hearing my response and tapped back: "Tap tap tap."
Could it really be one of my own? I hesitated before touching the wall; it was made of gray bricks. I tried digging with my fingers—it was hard as stone. After scratching for a while, my fingers were covered in blisters. No matter; gritting my teeth, I dug into the wall with all my might. Before long, I had actually created a hole.
I leaned closer to peer through but couldn’t see anything—it was darker than my side! Unable to see clearly, I called out: "Hey... is anyone there?"
After my shout, there seemed to be some movement; it only echoed once before falling silent again.
As I helplessly stared at my finger, which was oozing blood from a broken blister, a loud crash echoed through the darkness. Suddenly, the door swung open, and I squinted against the bright light, feeling as if I had seen a ghost when I caught sight of a figure entirely clad in black.
"Seven."
In disbelief, I questioned whether I had misheard. After a moment of hesitation, I responded, "Is that you, Gousi?"
Indeed, it was Gousi.
Gousi shouted angrily, "Get your boss out here! Seven is my brother. If he doesn't show mercy, don't blame me for being ruthless." Hearing this from Gousi frightened the people accompanying him; they hurriedly offered excuses, claiming their boss was unwell and resting.
"Let my brother out already." I was genuinely surprised by how Gousi had managed to find out where I was and come to rescue me so accurately. As I was released, a thought crossed my mind: could this be a ruse orchestrated by Gousi?
That thought felt absurd, and I couldn't help but laugh at myself for even considering it.
