Chapter 400: Evil Jade Entwined (Part One)
I let out a cold laugh, remaining silent as I stepped closer to him. Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, I snatched the cigarette from his lips and whispered, "You're sick. You're the one begging me, and you even threaten me. The last thing I, Ma, despise is being threatened. Also, she's a patient. It's common knowledge that smoking is not allowed here—something even a three-year-old would know. Do you not understand?"
Perhaps Gousi did not expect my sudden action. After my words, he paused for a moment, then unexpectedly broke into silent laughter. I didn't care what his laughter meant; my request was simple: I wanted him to explain everything in detail.
"Well..." Gousi hesitated, glancing toward the door. It was then that I noticed Brother Ma and Sister Zhu had quietly appeared at the entrance of the room.
I ignored them and stated firmly, word by word, "You must speak. Otherwise, even if you kill me, it would be in vain."
"Alright, kid, you’ve got guts. I'll tell you everything you want to know; just ask!"
"What do you do?"
Gousi was taken aback again, pouting slightly as he replied, "Saving people is important. Can we wait a bit to talk?"
"Doctors treat illnesses and prescribe remedies. Although I'm not a doctor, the events leading up to this and what you've done are crucial to this matter—unless you don't want her to wake up."
"We... we only do some business; it's no different from ordinary people. She means a lot to me, so please help her."
"Is that all?"
Gousi still looked doubtful, raising an eyebrow and twitching the corner of his mouth as he said, "That's it."
" Gousi, let's be clear in front of each other. You are definitely not someone who does ordinary business. Moreover, this room is filled with Evil Energy, especially around the person on the bed—her Yintang is darkened and she is surrounded by Evil Energy. If this were just business, how could it attract such malevolent forces?"
Gousi looked at me, his lips twitching slightly before he cleared his throat and said, "What about you? What am I here for?"
I was at a loss for words. This guy was really dragging things out. He called me to save someone but was wasting time here. He wanted me to guess, but whether I guessed or not, I needed to have a rough conclusion about the person on the bed. Besides, I had more important things to do and didn’t want to delay everything because of this. So I decided to take a leap and make a bold guess.
I scratched my nose and gritted my teeth, saying, "Although you started from scratch, you've done many illegal things that have accumulated karma."
Gousi looked up at the roof.
The roof had a light fixture, a crystal chandelier that hung quietly, like pairs of silent eyes watching over the people below.
After a few seconds, Gousi neither looked at me nor at the person on the bed; he spoke to me, "What illegal things do you think they are?"
My assertion about illegal activities wasn’t baseless; it was based on Gousi's situation and his relationship with Ma Ge and Zhu Jie.
Gousi was relatively young, probably in his thirties. He drove luxury cars, lived in mansions, and hired nannies. If he worked for the government, he probably wouldn’t dare to flaunt his wealth so openly. So, was he in business? That didn’t seem likely either; businesspeople are cautious about many things. Given the half-dead person in his house and the evil energy present, I doubted he was a businessman.
The evil energy in the room wasn’t just any ordinary thing; it likely emanated from the antiques scattered around.
Could he be an antique dealer?
I doubted that too because antique dealers usually know more than I do and wouldn’t bring items with evil energy into their homes.
With all these possibilities ruled out, could he be a social idle?
It was even more impossible. If he were a Social Idle, with no income or barely any income, how could he possibly live in a mansion, drive luxury cars, and hire a maid?
So, filled with anger and anticipation, I confidently said, "You are Tomb Raiders."
I thought that upon revealing their true identities, Gousi would become furious and at least try to chase me away. Given the strange relationship I had with Xie Ke, he shouldn't make things too difficult for me. The harsh words he had just spoken were merely a scare tactic meant for three-year-olds; I wasn't afraid.
To my surprise, when Gousi heard what I said, he smirked and walked over to the bed, rearranging the already neatly made blanket. This unnecessary action seemed to be a cover for something—had I really hit the mark?
"That's right, we are Tomb Raiders. I didn't expect you to be sharp enough to figure it out. But do you know what happens to those who uncover our identities?"
"What happens? Worst case scenario, I die. But I don't believe Gousi would kill me."
"Why not?"
I glanced at the person on the bed and replied in a calm tone, "Because of her." As soon as I said this, a tense atmosphere filled the room. The air grew heavy, and aside from the sound of the wind blowing in from outside, nothing else could be heard.
Gousi kept his hand extended toward beneath the pillow for a long moment before slowly withdrawing it.
"You all can leave now!"
Ma Ge and Zhu Jie exchanged glances, seeing a hint of fear in each other's eyes before bowing their heads and retreating.
With that, only Gousi and I remained in the room.
Seeing this, I was not afraid; I simply stared at him silently. Perhaps Gousi had just entertained some ill thoughts, but now he had to rein them in. After all, his wife still had a glimmer of hope, and that hope could only be transformed into a true chance of revival through my hands.
Gousi remained silent, scrutinizing me as if he were reassessing me. His demeanor had shifted from the roughness he initially displayed to a more shrewd and threatening presence, shedding any pretense like a hawk fixated on its prey, ready to strike at any moment.
At this moment, I was inwardly lamenting my predicament. With the death of Sha Doctor, I was already entangled in trouble due to someone’s schemes, and with Qin Jian missing, I had no time to waste. Yet here I was, caught up in this mess because of Xie Ke.
Finally, Gousi spoke again, his tone markedly different from the crude facade he had previously put on. It was slow and cold.
"Ma Qi, it seems you are also someone who hides your true self well. You must not be just an ordinary Mortician. Most people wouldn’t dare to confront me even if they knew my identity. But you are different; you seem unafraid. Should I take this as a threat?"
I dragged a wooden chair over from beside the bed and sat down heavily. To be honest, in my experience, there are two types of smart people. Dealing with the first type is exhausting because they tend to overthink everything; conversely, interacting with the second type is much simpler—just a few words or glances can convey understanding. The difference between them is straightforward—it's all about trust.
Unfortunately, Gousi clearly lacked trust in me. He was a clever man, so escaping his entanglement would not be easy.
