Chapter 66: Fateful Path (Twenty-Five)
He had to admit that his escape technique was impressive, but unfortunately, the bloodstains on the ground betrayed him. The scattered drops of blood extended towards the Mortuary, and because of the tiles on the floor, it was difficult to see his footprints clearly.
The corridors of the hospital were interconnected. Initially, he thought he had gone to Han Lan's place, but now, injured by the Five Thunder Eight Trigrams Talismans, he turned back and ran towards the Mortuary. I wondered if he would use a trick similar to what Han Lan had employed to seal off the Demonic Needle at the Mortuary and then look for an opportunity to escape.
If that were the case, I thought this Evil Sorcerer should consider retirement; relying on a single escape tactic was hardly entertaining. I reached out to brush off some of the torn fabric from my clothes and felt a sharp pain, causing me to frown as I lifted the ragged cloth to reveal a large area of bruising.
What a powerful White Bone Claw! This was also the Evil Sorcerer's most lethal grip. If I were just an ordinary person, that first strike would have already claimed a life. The White Bone Claw was laced with poison, leaving my skin mottled with bruises. I poured out all the incense ash I had, crouched down, spat into it to dilute it, and pressed it against my wound.
It hurt!
Cold sweat poured down like rain as I felt a wave of dizziness. Then I heard footsteps approaching. My chest tightened, and I felt nauseous. Turning my head, I saw someone running toward me, shouting, "Ma Qi! Ma Qi! Are you okay?"
I wasn't some fragile woman; I had fought with everything against the Evil Sorcerer. However, my shoulder and chest were poisoned. When I heard someone calling my name, I instinctively pointed at the Scent Pouch where there was still some incense ash left. Then I weakly gestured toward my shoulder before everything in front of me blurred into darkness, and I felt myself floating away.
I was invaded by poison; my soul had left my body. In this state, I saw Qin Jian, Chi Xinrong, and Zhang Xian calling out to me. Doctors and nurses rushed in with a stretcher to take me away. I wanted to follow them but felt my soul slipping out of control as if someone far away was calling me: "Brother Qi! Brother Qi..."
The voice was familiar—a gentle female voice. It was my woman's voice. Lightly floating toward the sound, a door appeared before me. At that moment, it felt like I wasn't in a hospital but behind a door leading to an unknown place.
But besides this door, there seemed to be no other way out. Ultimately, I grasped the doorknob and pulled it open.
Beyond the door lay a bustling street.
The street was lively with people dressed in strange attire and busy with their activities; amidst the crowd, I could hear voices calling for me. Without thinking, I moved toward them as the crowd began to stir and part on its own. Suddenly, my eyes brightened as I spotted a striking female commander clad in ancient armor standing behind them.
As I looked closely at her face, I was struck by how much she resembled Mi.
I swallowed hard, trying to convince myself that this was just an illusion. In my time, no one wore ancient armor. Unless, of course, I had somehow traveled to an unknown era where "Brother Qi" was being called out to me by this strikingly beautiful heroine. There was a warmth about her that drew me in; if it weren't for that, I wouldn't have been so easily captivated.
In real life, Mi was gentle and affectionate, but the Mi I saw now had shed her previous dignified demeanor. She exuded charm and grace, resembling a true heroine in the eyes of many.
"Brother Qi, why are you standing there in a daze? Are you unhappy to be in my territory?" Without regard for the crowd around us, Mi boldly linked her arm with mine and led me toward a magnificent building. The structures around us were all designed in an ancient style, and it seemed that everyone here held her in high esteem. Yet, I still couldn't be sure that she was indeed Mi.
I dared not speak a word, feeling somewhat lost as I was half-heartedly led inside.
Once we entered the building, I realized it wasn't just any garden; it was a vast courtyard dominated by a gigantic Sophora Tree that stood like a giant in the open space. I had never seen such a large Sophora Tree before. Its leaves shimmered with a luster that resembled strings of translucent pearls.
I was mesmerized.
"Brother Qi, this is the Boundary Sophora."
"Who are you? Why do you keep calling me Brother Qi? And why do you look so much like someone I know?"
My barrage of questions left her momentarily stunned. After a brief pause, her expression dimmed slightly, revealing an air of grievance. "Brother Qi, have you forgotten me?" As she spoke, she began to remove her ancient armor piece by piece, revealing a form-fitting garment underneath.
Though the unique allure of her armor was gone, she displayed a tender side that felt all too familiar. Aside from the mismatched location and time period, she was unmistakably my woman. My heart raced uncontrollably as I stepped forward and whispered urgently, "Mi... it's you..."
"Brother Qi, you've finally remembered me! What's going on? I've been assigned here by Qin Ye to guard the Boundary Sophora."
Oh! I remember now, my master hasn't appeared since he took Mi away. How did I end up in this place? Could it be that my soul has left my body? Seeing my confused expression, Mi smiled and gently held me, "Brother Qi, I've been waiting for you. Qin Ye, you would come, and I didn't expect to receive his notice today. We finally have a chance to meet." As she spoke, Mi's face turned red with shyness, her bashful demeanor still as charming as ever. I couldn't help but want to hold her tightly in my arms and never let her go again.
I stared at Mi, afraid that if I blinked, she would disappear. Even as I crossed the threshold, my eyes remained fixed on her.
"Brother Qi, you're making me feel shy. You need to relax," Mi gazed at me with deep affection. At her suggestion, we entered the inner room, adorned with a large red mosquito net, bright red double happiness characters, and a crimson silk quilt. I looked around in surprise as Mi hurriedly explained, "Qin Ye, you're coming, so I had someone decorate this place like a wedding hall for us to have a make-up ceremony."
My master is truly thoughtful; I was deeply moved. I embraced Mi and greedily inhaled the fragrance that only a girl possesses. My hands began to wander; the long-lost feeling of home surged within me, and memories of the times Mi spent with me flooded back continuously.
Mi lay gently in my arms, our eyes locked together. I longed to merge into her body. I felt like a lost traveler in a desert, extremely thirsty and suddenly spotting a shimmering blue spring. Forgetting everything around me and the passage of time, I leaped into the spring, allowing every cell in my body to awaken and letting the sweet water soak into every inch of my skin.
Lost in blissful entanglement, I silently argued with myself: Ma Qi, I'm willing to stay with Han Mi like this forever. To hell with being a Mortician; I want to be with my woman for life—one lifetime, two lifetimes—longer than any romance depicted in Three Lives Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.
I fell into a deep sleep amidst sweetness, still feeling Mi's breath against me. I heard her softly calling and shaking my arm before slowly opening my eyes.
