Chapter 18: Victory Through Adversity
Dengke Qi, furious, lunged at me. I swiftly dodged and elbowed him, causing him to stumble back with a crack as he suffered a self-inflicted blow. I stepped back, firmly grounding myself, and swept my leg, sending Dengke Qi crashing to the ground.
The scene unfolded so quickly that even Peng Hai, who was causing a ruckus, was taken aback and fell silent. They never expected that the person before them was merely a disguised fat man.
Dengke Qi knelt on the ground, and Qin Jian approached to try and cuff him. I couldn't shout a warning in time; Dengke Qi stomped the ground and, like an invisible man, suddenly vanished from sight.
He had used an Earth Escape Talisman.
Hmph! Such tricks won't fool me. You have your Earth Escape Talisman, but I have my Soul Searching Talisman. With one application of the Soul Searching Talisman combined with Purgatory Flame, all irrelevant individuals will steer clear. If I don't enter hell, who will? I activated my Demon Eyes and headed straight for the Yin-Yang Realm.
In an instant, darkness enveloped me. Shadows of ghosts loomed around as I suppressed my aura and stealthily made my way to the entrance. Crackling sounds echoed from within the house; a beam of light shot out, crawling with sharp-toothed Dark Elves.
I applied Purgatory Flame and chanted: "Open the door, close the earth's gate, leave the human door, sever the ghost path, pierce the ghost heart, break the ghost belly; front Vermilion Bird, back Black Tortoise, left Azure Dragon, right White Tiger. I summon Six Ding and Six Jia, Southern Dipper Six Stars, Big Dipper Seven Stars. I invoke Nine Responses of the Primordial Thunder Sound Universal Decree and Taishang Laojun's Urgent Command!"
A cacophony erupted as ghostly wails filled the air. The blinding beam of light dissolved in an instant, restoring calmness. In the darkness, I heard crying; it was Peng Yan sobbing and the fat man calling for help. I deactivated my Demon Eyes and turned on the lights.
"Are you okay, fat man?"
"Brother Qi, save me."
"You're fine now; Dengke Qi is trapped in Purgatory Space where the Purgatory Flame will be more than enough for him." At that moment, Qin Jian entered along with Chi Xinrong. They untied the fat man's ropes and noticed that Peng Yan had wet his pants, trembling all over with tears streaming down his face and his hair in disarray.
The fat man exclaimed, "This wife shows no respect for the dead by talking on the phone in front of a corpse! Look what happened! She attracted ghosts."
"Enough," I interrupted to stop him from continuing his tirade and urged him to comfort Peng Yan instead.
A charred and shriveled corpse lay there, being gnawed on by a stray dog that had wandered in. I shouted loudly to scare it away and picked up the corpse to examine it—there was no doubt it was Zheng Kai's stepfather's remains. This was Dengke Qi's attempt to extract evil souls using the corpse's Evil Energy and resentment; this time he would reap what he sowed by getting trapped in Purgatory Flame—he should learn his lesson.
Next, the fat man recounted everything that had happened.
It turned out that behind Boss Lei's affairs, Peng Yan had been chatting endlessly on her phone with a friend she met online. This was disrespectful to the deceased; I felt that simply chatting on the phone wasn't enough to disrespect them or attract Dark Elves.
Sure enough, under my questioning, another matter surfaced: Peng Yan had greedily stolen something from Boss Lei.
Boss Lei's string of beads was adorned with skulls, and in life, he had never believed in the supernatural. After his death, being taken to hell, he must have changed his mind.
This string of skull beads was filled with Evil Energy. Since they were items belonging to the dead, they couldn't be brought back home.
"Is there anything else? Hurry up and bring it out," Peng Yan urged as he rushed into the house and came back with a pile of items, including a water pen, a doll, insoles, and hairpins. Anything that looked exquisite and pretty that the deceased's family had discarded or not discarded was likely something Peng Yan had stealthily taken back.
"You really are bold, stealing so many things. Consider this a lesson learned; I won't help you next time."
That very night, I took these items to return them, knowing it would cost me some money for the occasion. A basket full of Hell Money was burned, and at the entrance stood one who extended his hand towards me: "Boss, that woman still owes me a girl."
"Fatty, burn one woman."
"Boss, I want a beautiful one."
"Look at you; what did she give you that you want a woman?"
"She promised to bless me with winning money and promised me a woman."
"So it turns out she's a card ghost." Seeing Fatty carrying the Paper Figurine, I told him, "Let Peng Yan handle the burning."
Qin Jian sat there while Peng Hai hesitated to come in. Seeing Fatty carrying the Paper Man, he approached with a grin and reached out to take it.
"Get lost." Fatty rejected Peng Hai and called for Peng Yan to go outside.
Now that the lights were coming on, people on the street hurried home. The sign of Ma Wu Funeral Home swayed gently in the wind.
Peng Hai watched as Peng Yan went out and then came over to fight for the Paper Figurine, saying, "Burn a ghost for me; sis will give me money."
"I don't have any money; wait until I burn this first."
Peng Hai was furious and stomped on the Paper Man, shouting at Peng Yan, "Burn it; let's see how you do it."
Qin Jian stepped out and loudly scolded Peng Hai. This brat cursed without taking it seriously at all.
I shook my head and got into Qin Jian's car.
"Lao Qi, aren't you going to do something?"
"Do what? Some things are beyond my control..." Just then, Peng Hai suddenly let out a scream like a pig being slaughtered, clutching the leg of the Paper Figurine that was stepping on him and shouting in pain.
This scene startled Peng Yan and the Fat Guy.
They rushed over to me, shouting, "Brother Qi, help him!"
"How can I help? One of his feet is already in the Underworld." As I spoke, the ground beneath Peng Hai suddenly cracked open, and a jet of flames shot out. He let out a wretched scream, pleading, "Brother Qi, save me."
"Lao Qi... I didn't see anything; he's just shouting nonsense!"
The Hellfire blazed hotter and hotter, licking at Peng Hai's clothes and body. He screamed in agony as his leg sank deeper into the crack. With a loud cracking sound, a deep fissure appeared. I turned to Qin Jian and said, "You drive." Qin Jian wasn't stupid; hearing my tone change, he quickly started the car.
The car sped away. From a distance, I could see Peng Hai still wailing, kneeling on the ground begging the Fat Guy for help.
The Fat Guy was sweating profusely as he ran after us.
As the car slowed down, he gasped for breath and leaned against the window, calling out to me, "Brother Qi, help him."
"I can help him, but he needs to drink this bottle of water!" I handed the Fat Guy a bottle. He took it and examined it closely; the blue crystal-clear liquid sparkled in the light. He brought it to his nose to sniff. I said, "Peng Hai has ruined his life with his own misdeeds; the only way to stop him from harming others is to turn him into an idiot."
Qin Jian looked surprised. "What is this stuff?"
"Forgetfulness Water."
"What if it causes problems?"
I glanced at Qin Jian and then at Peng Hai, who had fallen silent. I smiled and said, "Two choices: either turn him into an idiot or let him be taken away by the Evil Spirit Collector."
"I... I'll still give it to him."
Qin Jian pointed at me and said, "You're really ruthless."
"I'm not ruthless; he is. Qin Jian, I have a plan. How about we open a hotel for the dead?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean we should take Ma Wu Funeral Home and make it thrive."
Qin Jian kept glancing at the rearview mirror, hoping Fat could bring good news. He casually replied, "Sure! But can you handle it?"
"No problem." Suddenly, a heavy rain poured down with a loud clap of thunder; it's rare to have thunderstorms in autumn.
I said, "When things are out of the ordinary, there must be something unusual going on."
