Chapter 8: Just Deserts
Shi Lu lay bloodied over the toilet, her hand reaching into the bowl, clawing at it. Her legs seemed broken, and the bloodstains marked the path she had dragged herself along.
"Shi Lu."
Slowly, Shi Lu lifted her head and let out a hoarse laugh before burying her face back into the toilet as if to drink from it.
I held a talisman in my hand, and a gust of wind rushed to her side as I commanded, "Stop." Unexpectedly, Shi Lu retaliated with a slap aimed at me. I dodged swiftly, pressing the talisman against her face. A flash of light erupted, followed by a piercing scream. Shi Lu's expression twisted into something terrifying as she unleashed a flurry of wild attacks—moves only a fierce woman would know.
Her resentment ran deep, forcing me to use my ultimate technique. I bit down on my tongue, spitting a mouthful of blood onto Shi Lu's face. Her fingers curled back like a chicken's claw as she shrieked and howled, falling silent within two seconds.
I turned angrily to Wei Min, who was silently peeling away Shi Lu's body. "You called for my help; why are you treating her like this?"
"She deserves it. How much money did you take? Why stop me from dealing with her?"
"What a joke! I'm not that kind of person."
Shi Lu regained consciousness and cried out in pain; she urgently needed to be taken to the hospital. I couldn't let Wei Min continue her reckless behavior that could harm others. Holding the talisman firmly, I glared at her. "Do you think I trust you too much? Is that why you're so reckless in harming others?"
"Please, Master Ma, I'm not willing to accept this. I hate them! If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have died. I still have children..."
"The things they did to you will be punished by law. What you need to do now is report to the Underworld and leave yourself an escape route for your next life. When will this cycle of vengeance end? Living means doing meaningful things and enriching yourself. Life is all about mindset. People like your husband should be let go; don't be overconfident in going out alone to seek death. How could so much happen otherwise?"
"I'm not willing! I'm not willing!" Wei Min shouted, her eyes blazing with fury. If I couldn't subdue her, there was a high chance that her deep resentment would turn her into an Evil Spirit.
"Don't worry, Wei Min. Evil people will get their comeuppance; the punishment they receive will be enough to quell your anger. Next, I'll help you report to the Underworld and hope for your swift reincarnation."
"They killed me, what crime is that?" Wei Min struggled with her thoughts, yet felt compelled by my presence, fearing further punishment from me.
"Negligent homicide includes natural persons aged 16 and above, so for causing death through negligence, the penalty is imprisonment for not less than three years and not more than seven years. If the circumstances are lighter, it can be less than three years."
"I'm dead, and they only get such a light sentence. I can't accept it, I can't accept it."
"Wei Min, there's one more thing I haven't told you. Because your husband has cheated countless people during his business dealings and earned a lot of ill-gotten gains, his lifespan is nearing its end. Plus, after you pushed him down the stairs this time, the injuries have accelerated his death."
"Is that true?"
"Absolutely true. I'm taking a risk by revealing this to you; I wouldn't dare tell anyone else."
"What about her?" Wei Min glared at Shi Lu, unwilling to let her off easily.
"She's actually a victim too. Her vanity has harmed her; unable to resist the temptation of money and material things, she ended up with a man who could be her father. Deep down, she's suffering as well. She severed ties with her family, and in the days to come, Shi Lu will have a hard time—that's her punishment."
Wei Min fell silent. Shen Shoucai tried several times to approach her, but I stopped him, fearing it would push her to become an Evil Spirit. Now seeing her quiet, as if contemplating, I said, "Aunt Wei, if possible, I can call for help to rescue her. If we miss the chance for rescue and your sins accumulate when you reach the Underworld, you should be able to imagine what kind of treatment awaits you there."
"Alright! Call someone to save her; I'll go with you."
"That's more like it." As I took out the Soul Absorbing Talisman, Wei Min entered it. I anxiously dialed the hospital.
Ten arrived quickly.
Before being taken to the hospital, Shi Lu cast me a deep glance—one filled with gratitude and regret.
The bizarre car accident case on Xingxi Road South Section was solved thanks to Qin Jian's efforts. He invited me out for skewers.
Two bottles of beer down, and I was feeling chatty.
"Ma Qi, aren't you curious about what my mother is really like? Want to go see her?"
"I'd like to, but it's not possible. You can't drive after drinking."
Qin Jian, with bleary eyes, pulled out his phone and grinned, "I'll call a chauffeur."
The chauffeur arrived quickly, and to my surprise, it was Chi Xinrong. In that moment, I felt a wave of frustration wash over me. So Qin Jian was still trying to set me up with her? He pretended to be drunk just to call her!
It had been a while since we last met. She had changed her hairstyle but wore the same old outfit—sexy yet not overly revealing. She strode over and asked, "Ma Qi, how have you been lately?"
Seeing her reminded me of what had happened that night, and I couldn't help but sneer, "Thanks to you, I'm doing just fine."
"Really? There were things in your rental place that I had a skilled person check out for you. He even performed an Exorcism." Chi Xinrong glanced at Qin Jian, who was slumped over the table, and pointed at him. "Did you take advantage of him?"
"He did it on purpose."
"Huh?"
"Chi Xinrong, don't play dumb with me. Qin Jian called for a chauffeur because he was drunk, and it wasn't you he wanted? You showed up, he got drunk, and your little scheme worked out perfectly. You should be thanking yourself for that. Oh wait, I forgot—you can't drink; otherwise, you wouldn't be able to be a chauffeur."
"Ma Qi, that's enough! I'm not a chauffeur. With my status, how could I possibly do that? Also, Qin Jian didn't call me; we aren't plotting anything—you're just overthinking it." Chi Xinrong said this without hesitation as she sat down and grabbed a bottle of beer. She tilted the bottle toward her bright red lips and gulped down several large swigs. Still unsatisfied, she raised the bottle high as if she intended to down an entire bottle in one go.
I snatched the nearly empty beer bottle from her hand. "Chi Xinrong, I have something to ask you..."
"What is it? Go ahead and ask!" Chi Xinrong tightened her grip on the bottle and took another big gulp without batting an eye. Wiping her mouth casually with the back of her hand, she looked at me and said, "Don't be shy; whatever you want to ask, I can answer."
“It's you who came to my house to cause trouble, using the Ghost Paper Man to scare me and even causing destruction, isn't it?” I pointed at her.
She raised her hand to push mine away. “I'm just here to drink, not to discuss anything else.”
Damn, that girl must be feeling guilty. I retorted angrily, “I've been drinking too. If Qin Jian gets drunk, how are we going to drive later?”
I was in a heated argument with Chi Xinrong, trying not to disturb the people at the nearby table while lowering my voice to ask questions. Just then, Qin Jian's phone rang. Frustratingly, he remained slumped over the table, indifferent to the ringing phone.
I reached out to grab his phone, but that girl was quick and snatched it away to check. Then she answered the call. A woman's voice came through the line: “Qin Jian, did you call me for something?”
I recognized her voice as the intern Qin Jian had introduced me to last time. It seemed he had dialed the wrong number and reached that intern instead. I hurriedly urged Chi Xinrong to hang up.
But that stubborn girl ignored me and asked, “Who are you? What do you want with our Qin Jian?”
