Chapter 80: The Only Truth
I asked Shen Shoucai, "Is there any way to rescue the hostages?" I saw police cars continuously rushing in, but they could only join the traffic jam at the back. The officers had to sprint on foot for a hundred meters to get closer, yet the assailant refused to exit the vehicle. The police could only warn from outside, shouting through their megaphones. The traffic was getting worse, and I realized that the assailant's intentions were not solely focused on this family. Not far from the minivan was a heavy tank truck. If I wasn't mistaken, this Evil Soul intended to take as many innocent lives with him as possible.
I couldn't let this real-life grim reaper turn into an irreversible tragedy! The situation was urgent; my immediate task was to inform the traffic police to prevent more cars from coming in. If we could block incoming vehicles, we might have a chance to retreat. However, doing so would be too slow and might alert the assailant.
The priority was to evacuate people from the scene as quickly as possible, including those inside the vehicles.
But given my abilities, it was impossible to evacuate so many people in such a short time. Fortunately, Shen Shoucai was there. I shouted, "Shen Shoucai, are you there?"
"I'm here, boss."
"Stop messing around; think of a way to control the Evil Soul while I evacuate people."
"Understood." Shen Shoucai moved out.
I hurried towards the police officers, using vehicles for cover so that the Evil Soul wouldn't see my actions. I approached them and explained the situation, but they didn't believe me and demanded to see my identification. Luckily, Qin Jian had already advised me to carry my special department credentials; otherwise, I would have been in serious trouble in this situation.
I presented my credentials from the special department and asked one of the officers to verify my identity over the phone. They quietly began evacuating people from the scene.
With the police's orders, everyone inside their vehicles complied without hesitation. Adults and children alike evacuated in an orderly fashion. This was a precautionary measure I took since I wasn't confident I could subdue the Evil Soul quickly enough; people were starting to leave from the front.
I saw Shen Shoucai approaching the Knife-Wielding Thug and attempted to intervene by slapping him on the shoulder. The thug remained unfazed as his knife dug deeper into his victim. The driver was terrified, trembling all over with a face like ash. Nearby, a young mother had collapsed in tears, her mouth foaming white.
The child and an elderly person were frozen in fear, wanting to run but unable to do so; even if they dared, it would be impossible as the doors were locked tight.
If this vehicle exploded, it would trigger a massive explosion from that tank truck nearby. The entire traffic jam would suffer a terrifying chain reaction of explosions, affecting pedestrians and nearby establishments.
Therefore, an explosion must be avoided at all costs. I wiped away cold sweat as I saw Shen Shoucai struggling with the Villain over the knife. I reminded him urgently, "Try to open the car door!"
Shen Shoucai continued fighting with the Villain in the cramped driver's seat.
I couldn't help outside the car.
What should I do!
I was anxiously pacing back and forth when, at that moment, Qin Jian called. It seemed someone had informed him I was here.
The phone rang softly, and the minivan's door was closed, but I could clearly see the villain's eyes reflecting a fierce light.
“Qin Jian, I have something to deal with. I'll talk to you later.” After hanging up on Qin Jian, the police successfully cleared the area; everyone in the cars within two miles had left. Now it was my turn to act. I slowly stood up and walked to the front of the minivan, tapping on the car window.
The villain inside saw me, and his expression changed. Suddenly, a shadow darted out from the villain's body.
The villain was no longer menacing; he had transformed into a beggar with unclear features, collapsing weakly onto the driver, causing a knife to fall to the ground.
That shadow was the Evil Soul.
What surprised me was that this Evil Soul turned out to be the owner of Leishi Car Shop.
According to logic, a New Soul arriving in this unfamiliar world should be weak and incapable of manipulating a human body for its own use. It must have been driven by a surge of resentment and unwillingness that enabled this incredible act.
Shen Shoucai wanted him to reveal his true form; with just a few punches and kicks, one soul and one ghost turned the small minivan upside down.
The people inside were so frightened they fainted.
Shen Shoucai opened the car door while I stood at the entrance like a deity, holding the Eighteen Cubes.
The Evil Soul let out a defiant howl, angrily shouting, “Why do you think you can control me?”
“I will control you! If you remain stubborn, I'll trap you in the Eighteen Cubes, and you'll have no chance to be a ghost.” As I spoke, the Eighteen Cubes emitted a greenish glow that frightened Leishi Car Shop's owner's Evil Soul so much that he let out a strange scream and fell to the ground, submitting to my will.
I captured the Evil Soul into the Soul-Restraining Talisman. Shen Shoucai jumped out of the car, and with a wave of my hand, the waiting medical staff and police rushed forward to save the person in need.
When someone does something wrong, they must face punishment. Trying to escape through death is not a solution. The owner of Leishi Car Shop should be held accountable, and I hope that Wei Minquan can rest in peace.
Sixth People's Hospital.
Qin Jian paced anxiously at the entrance, waiting for me.
As I approached with Shen Shoucai, he eagerly came forward and asked, "How is it over there?"
"He's already gone. Where is he now?"
"In the emergency room."
I walked ahead while Qin Jian walked beside me, saying, "He had a pulse when he was brought to the hospital, but it was very weak for several minutes. The doctors have done all they can; they want to notify his family to come for a final goodbye."
"Have his family arrived?"
"His family consists of his First Wife, Wei Min, and a long-term partner, Shi Lu, with whom he never formalized a marriage."
"What about Shi Lu? Where is she now?"
"Shi Lu is missing."
I froze. Where could Shi Lu have gone? A mobile stretcher was hurriedly pushed toward us, accompanied by nurses and doctors. I overheard a nurse reporting to a doctor, "Her family refuses to sign the release forms and insists on immediate discharge."
Hearing this left me stunned; wasn't that woman here to discuss this very matter?
I looked toward the departing mobile stretcher.
“Ma Qi, what do you think we should do next?”
“Leishi Car Shop, have you checked it out?”
“Close the door.”
“Wait for me, I’ll go take a look.”
I wanted to save that woman and found myself instinctively rushing toward the moving stretcher. Unexpectedly, I was grabbed by Qin Jian, who exclaimed, “Ma Qi, are you even listening to me? He doesn’t have much time left. This is my first case involving a traffic murder; we can’t just abandon it halfway.”
I stopped in my tracks. Qin Jian had a point. If I continued to chase after the moving stretcher, the life of the Leishi Car Shop owner would truly be in jeopardy. If he died, this case would remain a mystery, and Qin Jian would face repercussions from above for failing to uncover the truth and for pushing someone to their death.
This matter was serious. I was at a crossroads, but in the end, I followed Qin Jian to the emergency room.
