Chapter 69: The Wild Ghost on the Road
This time, Qin Jian did not see the girl; she was hiding from view.
I glanced at the spot where the girl had vanished. "Nothing much, just a lost lamb."
"What did you feel while lying there?"
"I gained something." Just then, I noticed that the woman had suddenly appeared behind Qin Jian, so I warned him, "Take your dagger; don't let anything get to you."
"The dagger is in the car. Am I supposed to carry it all the time?" I shot a glare at the old woman lurking behind Qin Jian, thinking: Don't cause trouble, or I won't help you.
Only after the old woman obediently disappeared did I say to Qin Jian, "Let's head back to the station and check the archives for clues."
The archives are generally not easy for ordinary people to access, but it was different for Qin Jian and me. Since we were investigating a cold case, the station would accommodate our requests as long as they weren't too unreasonable.
However, this time I wanted to look into traffic accident cases. I wasn't sure if there were any such files at the station. Noticing my concern, Qin Jian asked, "What type of files are you looking for?"
"Do you have any on traffic accidents?"
Qin Jian rarely smiled, but he did this time. "It's as if you knew you wanted to investigate traffic accidents. By the time we got involved in this matter, someone at the station had already requested all relevant files regarding previous incidents to be transferred to the Special Case File Room."
"Wow, cool." At eleven o'clock at night, Qin Jian and I headed to the Special Case File Room.
We searched through numerous files based on their numbers and dates, but it felt like searching for a needle in a haystack; nothing we found was useful. Just when we were feeling hopeless, a file fell off one of the shelves with a thud.
It wasn't just any file; it was a sealed envelope containing documents related to a traffic accident.
"Is this about a traffic accident?"
I didn't look at the question from Qin Jian; I quickly tore off the seal and took out the documents inside.
The file contained information: In 2001, the deceased was a woman named Wei Min. She was forty-two years old and died in a car accident. The driver responsible for the accident has yet to be found, and it occurred at five in the morning. I skimmed through her height, weight, and occupation before my gaze lingered on the photo of the deceased. She looked so much like the woman I first saw at the Funeral Home, as well as the one who crawled toward me on the road where the incident happened.
"Do you know her?"
"I don't know her, but she appeared at the Funeral Home and then tonight at the accident site."
"Oh, I'll look for information about her family," Qin Jian said as he continued searching for more details.
I kept looking, feeling increasingly convinced of the resemblance.
Qin Jian brought over more documents, helped me remove the seal, and handed me the papers. I took them and examined them closely.
Wei Min's husband was a businessman who seemed to deal in Electric Vehicles and their parts, and he had already remarried. As I continued reading, I discovered that this remarried husband had moved five times since his wife's accident.
What did his frequent relocations mean?
The last move was to a wealthy area in A City, specifically New South Street, Fuli Garden, Building 12, Unit A, Door 6.
I rented an apartment on the third floor of a regular residential area on New South Street, directly across from Fuli Garden's upscale residences. I stood up and walked to the window to gaze at the luxurious buildings across from me. There were over a dozen high-end designed apartments with lavish decorations. Who knew which building he was in? It wouldn't be possible to check each one like a household registration.
"Let's go investigate tomorrow."
Qin Jian handed me a cigarette. "To perk you up."
I stretched lazily. "I'm tired; I'll continue tomorrow."
"Alright, that's it for today."
Qin Jian drove me home, and I was so tired that I didn't want to move. I dozed off in the car.
"Ma Qi, Mi has already left. You should consider Rongrong; she's actually quite nice."
I casually wiped the corner of my mouth, a habit I've developed to avoid drooling while sleeping. I waved my hand in refusal and said, "No, Mi is by my side..."
"Sigh, Ma Qi has always been infatuated, and now you add another one."
I pretended to snore, not wanting to discuss anything further.
"It's been a long time since we had some skewers. Want to go?"
It really had been a while since I enjoyed some skewers. Just thinking about those spicy and crispy treats made my mouth water. But today, I lazily opened my eyes and thought about Mi being home alone, so I decisively refused, "No, I want to sleep."
After I turned down the invitation for skewers, Qin Jian didn't say anything more and focused on driving until we reached our destination before calling out to me.
I got out of the car and said, "See you tomorrow." It took me just two minutes to get upstairs. As soon as I entered the house, my eyes brightened; it was spotless inside. The coffee table was dust-free, and the freshly washed clothes were spinning in the washing machine. I felt incredibly touched.
Mi had done so much for me.
Hearing me come home, she called out from the kitchen, "Brother Qi, eat this." Mi thoughtfully brought out a late-night snack.
I glanced at it; it was mung bean porridge, and I was hungry. I picked it up and took a whiff, inhaling deeply. "It smells great."
"Give it a try," Mi said with a sweet smile. She looked just like any normal person; the only difference was her overly pale complexion.
"You should rest. Baymax shouldn't come out too much to avoid exhausting your ghostly energy; it's not good for you." Mi's condition wasn't great at all; her face was as white as transparent paper. If this continued, she would exhaust her ghostly energy and lose her spirit.
To prevent such a thing from happening, I had specially set up a small spirit hall in one of the rooms—just big enough to occupy a small space. So from the outside, it was unnoticeable. Moreover, that room was locked; there was only one key that only I possessed, ensuring no one else could enter.
"Brother Qi, I want to sleep next to you." Mi didn't need to sleep; every time I closed my eyes, she was busy in the room. By the time I needed something, she had already prepared it, made breakfast, and ironed my clothes, leaving the floor spotless.
"Mi, take a break. You're going to wear the floor down."
"Brother Qi, you sleep. I'll keep working for a bit." Her voice carried a hint of tears. I knew she was suffering inside. I walked over and held her in my arms, rubbing my chin against her hair, kissing her forehead. I cupped her face in my hands, and as our eyes met, her big eyes were still beautiful and enchanting, though they lacked their usual vitality.
I lowered my head and pressed my lips against her light purple ones. She pushed me away, forcing a bitter smile as she said, "Brother Qi, no. You can't do this. It's impossible for us. I..."
"Mi, how about I ask Master to bring you back to life or borrow a corpse for you?"
"Have you forgotten Grandpa's lesson? Brother Qi, this is fine. Even though we can't be a couple in reality, as long as we can see each other, that's enough." Hearing her say this made me unable to hold back any longer; silent tears streamed down my face. Yet I pretended nothing was wrong, swallowing my tears like a tough guy.
In truth, I wasn't that selfish. Mi's lifespan had ended, and her connection with her family was weak. If I went to the Underworld now and used Master’s connections, she could be reincarnated quickly. But she insisted on staying, and I couldn't bear to hurt her; yet by doing so, I was only causing her more pain.
