Chapter 68: The Mysterious Car Accident Case
I was still in shock, wondering where he had gone, when my phone rang—it was Qin Jian. I hurriedly answered and told him I was coming down, not bothering to look around as I rushed downstairs to get into the car.
Qin Jian reversed onto the road and asked, "Are you getting used to living away from Ma Wu Funeral Home?"
"Not bad," I replied. As I descended, I had slipped the Eighteen Cubes into my bag, but I couldn't shake off the image of the Ghostly Enforcer using its palm to absorb the evil spirit of Li Gui. The Evil Sorcerer that had appeared in Mi Dreamland was not Li Gui; I was convinced that Mi's death was somehow connected to that Evil Sorcerer from her dreams.
However, the visitor did not seem friendly, and with everything going on with Fatty, I had no time to investigate further. I also asked Mi if she remembered anything from the moment of her incident. She couldn't recall anything; if she hadn't seen her own body curled up on the ground, she wouldn't have believed she was dead.
"You don't seem well; did you not get enough rest?" Qin Jian observed.
"Focus on driving. It's best if you don't ask about my situation; I can't explain it clearly."
"Alright! I won't ask anymore. Just take care of yourself."
"Yeah."
In the late hours of the night, there were few pedestrians on the road, and traffic was sparse. Our car sped towards the accident site without any hindrance, and soon we arrived at Xingxi Road South Section.
At this moment, the area was deserted, enveloped in a heavy Deathly Aura that sent chills down my spine. The shadows of massive buildings loomed over the dim streetlights, casting an eerie gloom. Suddenly, a truck rumbled towards us—it looked like a garbage truck.
Only a garbage truck could give off such a heavy feeling. Out of nowhere, a White-Clad Woman appeared, holding a phone to her ear as she quickly crossed over the green belt and headed straight for the road.
"Qin Jian, stop the car!"
Qin Jian noticed the girl who had suddenly appeared and brought the car to a halt. I hurriedly opened the door and dashed out. Sprinting at full speed towards her, I realized that the enormous truck was barreling down towards her without her noticing. Just as she was about to step into its path, I lunged forward and scooped her up, sprinting across the road without a second thought.
The girl stood frozen for a moment; by the time she stopped moving, I had already run far ahead. She glanced at the roaring truck that had just passed by, clearly terrified, before quickly turning to leave the scene.
“Ma Qi, your skills have improved so much. When did you learn that move?”
“What do you mean?”
“Just now, when you rushed to save the person, I didn’t even blink. You grabbed the girl and seemed to flash across the street in an instant. How did you do that?”
“Did I? I’m not sure how it happened!” When I held the girl, it felt like some unseen force was pushing me forward. Was it Mi? I thought of Mi, but she didn’t appear, leaving me puzzled.
After asking for the exact location of the incident a few times, I got out of the car, and Qin Jian followed suit.
“What’s your next plan, Ma Qi?”
I checked the time; it was ten past ten at night. I walked toward the precise location, with Qin Jian trailing beside me, looking around to ensure no cars were coming before we crossed over.
The area where the incident occurred was at a dead-end turn. Looking back, there were shops and stores. Looking ahead, there was an entrance to the main road. Logically, this place shouldn’t have had consecutive incidents; the foot traffic wasn’t heavy, and there were traffic lights and surveillance cameras installed.
“Is this the spot?” I pointed out the area where it happened. The ground was very clean; not even a single fallen leaf could be found, let alone any trace of what had occurred. However, under a streetlight on the side of the incident area, there was quite a pile of offerings for the deceased.
A few mice scurried away in fright at our sudden arrival, squeaking as they vanished in an instant. They must have come to steal the offerings of pastries. I gestured briefly and then stepped onto the incident area without saying a word and lay down.
“Ma Qi, what are you doing?”
“Just go smoke a cigarette over there and let me have some quiet.”
“That’s not okay! What if a car comes? You’d be putting yourself in danger!”
“Don’t worry about me; I’m fine. Just listen to me and go smoke your cigarette. I’ll be alright here.”
“Alright then! Just be careful.” Qin Jian looked back at me several times as he walked away before finally stopping a few meters away at a platform.
I lay down, suppressing my breath, feeling the coldness emanating from the ground. My back ached slightly from the impact, but I could endure it. I closed my eyes just a bit, halting all chaotic thoughts, deeply sensing the various abnormalities and the atmosphere here that were different from anywhere else.
Earth, people, and—merged into one! A shadow crawled quickly towards me after I had been lying there for a while. She was the woman I had seen at the Funeral Home who begged me for help, moving with a speed akin to that of a spider with eight legs.
Her eyes were filled with resentment, and an aura of hostility, malice, and grievance enveloped me.
She reached out and grabbed my hand, and in an instant, I felt as if I had entered another space. Then came sounds and images from this other realm; she was crying, desperately pleading for something, foolishly clutching at the car's Rearview Mirror, unwilling to let go.
The car was moving, and as she held onto the Rearview Mirror, she was pulled away. Then she fell to the ground, dragged along as the car turned sharply and crushed her beneath its wheels. "Help me..." The endless lamentation and heart-wrenching plea sent chills down my spine. I jolted awake, surprised to see a girl in a plain dress standing before me.
The girl held a phone in her hand, tilting her head as she squatted down to look at me and asked, "You don't want to live anymore? What's troubling you?" At this point in the unfolding events, I thought everyone should understand that the person I had foolishly saved moments ago was actually a ghost.
Even Qin Jian could see her presence.
"You... I have nothing going on. I'm just here to experience death and investigate something." In truth, I wanted to see the woman who had crawled towards me so urgently just moments ago.
Her face was pale as she smiled sadly at me and said, "Thank you for saving me. Can you help me with one more thing?"
Seeing her seemingly harmless expression, it appeared she didn’t even realize she was dead. I sat up in confusion and asked, "What is it?"
"I can't find my way home; I can't remember which way to go."
"Oh."
"Do you have an ID or any other form of identification?"
The girl shook her head. "No, it seems something happened to me. When I woke up, I was curled up on the road with nothing at all."
"It's really cold here; I'm scared. Someone died here not long ago. Aren't you afraid lying down like this?"
"I'm fine, I'm going back. What are you planning to do?"
"I still want to see if I can find my way home along this road."
"Here, I'll give you my business card. If you remember anything, just contact me." I took out a business card that Qin Jian had printed for me and set it on fire with my lighter.
The card was in her hands, but she still looked shocked and at a loss. "This..."
"I don't know what happened to you, and I don't know where you live, so I want to tell you that, actually, you've already died."
"I died?" Clearly, she didn't believe that she was dead, repeating to herself, "Did I die?" Then she started walking away into the distance. I estimated she wouldn't go far; she'd probably just wander around this stretch of road until her seventh day came, when she'd finally remember her home address and be escorted back by the Ghostly Enforcer who came to capture her.
Qin Jian had been watching me, observing my actions as I handed over the business card and watched her leave. Then she quickly approached me and asked, "What did you just light?"
