Chapter 64: The Shadow of Fate 0

I suddenly felt the gentle caress on my face still lingering, and her voice had not faded. She continued, "Brother Qi, your fate lacks the yin element. Now that Fat has found his own place, although I cannot be your wife in reality, I can accompany you for a lifetime." 0

At that moment, I was stunned. 0

My fate lacked the yin element, and Mi could not become my wife in this world; she could only become a spirit after death to fulfill her promise of companionship. 0

"Don't..." The well of tears within me burst forth again as I held the pitiful Mi and wept uncontrollably. 0

"Big Brother, why are you crying?" 0

A girl holding a doll suddenly appeared before me. She couldn't see Mi; she only saw me crying alone. 0

"Friend, Big Brother lost something precious, so he's crying." I picked up Mi and forced a smile at my friend as I hurriedly explained and tried to leave. 0

I returned to Ma Wu Funeral Home with Mi. The Bagua Mirror above the door posed no threat to her due to my protective talisman. I couldn't tell everyone that I hadn't truly lost Mi; instead, I had gained a ghostly wife. 0

I felt immense guilt towards Mi's parents. With Mi's help through dreams to reach her family, I took out some money to comfort them. From then on, I made it a point to send them gifts during festivals until they passed away. 0

Mi was buried in Han Family Xiewan Village half a month after her birth. 0

I had initially wanted to use the coffin left by my grandfather to preserve her body but feared the curse from evil spirits that had afflicted him. Thus, that idea eventually withered away in my mind. My secret about Mi not leaving me was soon discovered by Qin Jian. 0

"Ma Qi, I feel like Mi hasn't really left you..." 0

"Why do you say that?" I glanced nervously at Mi beside me, unsure if Qin Jian could sense her presence. 0

"You look like that; I'm just guessing." 0

"What do you mean?" 0

"When did Peng Yan have her confinement?" 0

"What's going on today? Why is my business being brought up in relation to Peng Yan's pregnancy?" I shook my head. "I don't know." 0

"I see that girl at the car shop across the street has her eyes on you, but you look like you're pushing everyone away. Are you trying to act cool or just being pretentious? Someone once told me that life is meant to be enjoyed, to indulge when you can. But now, you can't even do that, still hung up on your Mi. She's gone, maybe reincarnated as someone else's Princess, and here you are, lost in your fantasies." 0

"She hasn't left me; my Mi is always with me." The truth was, Mi was truly with me. She brought joy, accompanied me in sleep and work. Wherever I went, she was there too; it was just that these people didn't know. 0

"Ma Qi, it seems you're deeply poisoned by this." 0

"I like being poisoned," I replied proudly, glancing out the car window at the Bridgehead car shop. That young woman was quite flirtatious, applying her makeup in front of a mirror. As if sensing someone was watching her, she quickly turned her head. 0

Qin Jian's car screeched to a stop at Ma Wu Funeral Home. 0

Peng Yan's belly had grown larger, making her appear quite bloated. She moved with less grace than before, clumsily enough to make one want to laugh. 0

"Brother Qi, they're calling for you over there." 0

I got out of the car with Mi by my side, our fingers intertwined tightly. As long as we were like this, Peng Yan would glance at me with a mix of envy and disdain, making me feel uneasy inside. Dual-bodied beings could see things others couldn't; I urged Mi not to disturb her for the sake of the baby she carried. 0

Fatty was about to become a father and everything seemed to be going smoothly for him; he wore a constant smile that made him look endearing and silly. 0

I promised Fatty I'd head over to that place. Qin Jian handed me a file. "This is the first case we've taken on—a bizarre car accident case. If you find any issues in the documents, give me a call." 0

"No problem." The materials Qin Jian gave me would have to wait until I finished my current tasks. So now I was swamped; all business matters at Ma Wu Funeral Home were temporarily handled by Peng Hai. 0

Peng Hai arrived and took charge of everything in the shop; he seemed to be doing quite well. 0

Perhaps it was because his sister was about to give birth that he appeared more cheerful now, not as gloomy and fierce as when I first met him. 0

However, there was one thing I could never agree with Fatty about: buying a car. 0

Fatty insisted on purchasing a vehicle for Peng Hai to drive; Peng Hai had gotten his driver's license years ago. Fatty's reasoning for buying a car was simple—it was for the good of the Funeral Home. 0

However, speaking of which, the Funeral Home indeed needs a vehicle. 0

Those large paper items need to be delivered by car, but I'm still considering this matter. When I went to the fat guy's funeral, the burial arrangements were completed smoothly. In the afternoon, when I returned to the Funeral Home, Peng Yan had gone to the hospital with the fat guy for a check-up. 0

Peng Hai was nowhere to be seen. 0

I opened the drawer and found that a large sum of money was missing. 0

So I called the fat guy to ask about it, but he hadn't seen that money. 0

"Brother Qi, it was Peng Hai who took it to give to the Bridgehead Woman. Mi reminded me, and I immediately thought of Peng Hai. He went straight to the Bridgehead car shop and chatted with that woman for quite a while. If the fat guy hadn't called him back, he might still be having dinner somewhere." 0

However, having dinner was unlikely. At noon, the car shop owner would come to take her out for a meal. 0

Mi believed that Peng Hai had delivered the money to that woman without a doubt. I didn't lock the door and let Mi keep an eye on things before heading over directly. 0

Sure enough, I saw Peng Hai talking with that woman. 0

The woman's fingers were painted with red nail polish, and one hand casually rested on Peng Hai's shoulder while his arm unintentionally brushed against her chest. 0

She giggled, and Peng Hai laughed along. 0

"Peng Hai." 0

"Brother Qi, what's up?" 0

"Why would I call you if there was nothing going on?" 0

Hearing my words, he became furious and shouted, "Hammer, I'm not making money off you! Why are you yelling?" 0

"Peng Hai, that's not right. You should know whose shop that is." 0

Peng Hai stood up, rolled up his sleeves, and glared at me, saying, "I know the shop belongs to my brother-in-law; otherwise, I wouldn't have agreed to let him marry my sister." 0

"Who told you that?" 0

"Do I need to be told? My brother-in-law swore it was true." With that, Peng Hai raised an eyebrow and glared at me. "Ma Qi, I respect you enough to call you Brother Qi, but don't get too cocky. You're eating and living in my house, yet you're here lecturing me..." 0

I had no patience to let him finish. His arrogant demeanor had already infuriated me. With a loud thud, I punched him hard on the left side of his face. Peng Hai winced in pain, grimacing as he prepared to retaliate. 0

Before he could strike back, Mi yanked him away, causing him to fall awkwardly on his back. The onlookers burst into laughter, including that girl who covered her mouth while stifling her giggles and secretly threw me a flirtatious glance. 0

Damn it. I spat and stormed back into the shop. 0

When I returned, I asked Fatty if he had told Peng Hai that he was the boss. 0

That guy surprisingly replied, "Well, after all these years, does it really matter who the boss is?" What kind of nonsense was this? It felt like inviting a wolf into the house; I was so furious I could spit blood. 0
