Chapter 61: A Good Deed Each Day
"Ma Qi, it's not as serious as you think. Peng Yan will probably recover soon, and once she does, it won't be our concern anymore. Shouldn't we send her back?" Qin Jian was being selfish, treating the situation as if it had nothing to do with him.
"Lao Qin, don't be unreasonable. You can't ignore the condition of Mi. We still need to think about what to do with Peng Yan; you can't just push her off onto Mi to take care of."
With no solutions in sight, we could only bring Peng Yan to the Funeral Home for temporary accommodation.
The chubby guy greeted us cheerfully, but when he saw us bringing out the disheveled and vacant-eyed Peng Yan from the car, his jaw dropped in shock.
"Brother Qi, what is going on? I'm almost overwhelmed with work, and you bring back a crazy girl?"
"Stop talking nonsense. She's not crazy. Let her stay in your room; you can take your grandfather's room instead."
"What?!" The chubby guy protested but dared not refuse. So, Peng Yan temporarily stayed at Ma Wu Funeral Home, with Zhu Dachang designated as her guardian.
"Chubby, you've worked hard. I'll handle these orders; you just look after Peng Yan for now. I'll compensate you for your trouble."
The chubby guy glanced at Peng Yan, then at Qin Jian and me. "Brother Qi, do you realize this is a ridiculous decision? Even if I don't go out, I still need to prepare supplies for the store. Managing all this requires time and energy. How am I supposed to work with a crazy girl like her here?"
"This matter is settled then; you can choose to do it or not." I left the disgruntled chubby guy behind, sent off Qin Jian, and prepared to head to the Funeral Home with Mi.
Qin Jian's next task was to find out what had happened to Peng Yan at City Hospital and help her open up so we could address her issues properly. Whether we could cure her psychological problems would depend on timing. In a worst-case scenario, we were prepared to send her to a Mental Hospital.
Mi had nothing to do and didn't understand Mystical Arts or how to protect herself from Yinling disturbances, so I didn't want her to suffer alongside me. I arranged for her to join the Honor Guard instead. The Honor Guard was great; they could sing and dance while also keeping fit.
I arranged for Mi to be placed in the Honor Guard, feeling reassured with a familiar face looking after her.
On one hand, I was busy with several funerals, and on the other, I had to work with Qin Jian to investigate the bizarre cold cases that had been stored in the archives of the Station for so many years.
As for Fatty and Peng Yan, her various behaviors at the Funeral Home seemed not as bad as I had imagined. At least, the quirky Fatty could take good care of her; just by looking at her refreshed outfit and neatly styled hair, it was clear how attentive he was.
I secretly teased Fatty, saying, "Having her as your wife would be a blessing." I thought it was just a joke, but unexpectedly, in later developments, Fatty actually taught Peng Yan, who acted stiffly like a scarecrow, how to apply glue for the Paper Figurine.
Fatty had to look after Peng Yan while I personally handled several funerals on my own, which kept me so busy that even when I dozed off, I had to time it right.
At that moment, Qin Jian called me. He told me something alarming: Peng Yan had once paid for a fake nursing school diploma and ended up at City Hospital, nearly causing a major incident. As a result, several nurses who despised her punished her privately by forcing her to drink underground sewage due to their grievances about her irresponsible behavior that led to their bonuses being docked.
After being forced to drink sewage, Peng Yan was found collapsed beside a trash bin, covered in injuries. She was then taken to a nearby clinic where they notified Peng Hai based on her ID and phone number.
Peng Hai brought Peng Yan home, and she gradually became the way she is now.
At that moment, Qin Jian and I took Peng Yan to City Hospital—the basement where she had been punished by those nurses.
When Peng Yan arrived at that place, she became agitated and started screaming. I made a few Paper Men out of paper; those nurses seemed to want to practice their skills on the Paper Men. To Peng Yan, they were just bullies.
After venting her anger by grabbing and biting at them, she fell into a coma.
While Peng Yan was unconscious, I cast a spell to erase all memories of me from her mind, leaving only the memories of Fatty taking care of her. Then I gave her a drink infused with an Awakening Talisman.
Peng Yan opened her eyes and immediately asked, "Where's Fat?" She remembered Fat, and with a shy smile, she turned to me and Qin Jian, asking how she ended up here.
Fat wouldn't understand how Peng Yan suddenly became so attached to him.
No matter where he went, Peng Yan followed closely behind. Previously, he took care of her; now, she was taking care of him.
Fat was in luck, his face beaming with joy.
Peng Yan and Fat had become a couple. They both suggested moving out together, and I nodded in agreement without hesitation. I reminded them to register their marriage soon and then visit her brother, Peng Hai.
So far, Qin Jian couldn't believe how things had turned out. He joked, "Ma Qi, seeing how good Peng Yan is to Fat, aren't you jealous?"
"I have no reason to be jealous," I replied with a shy smile as I went to serve the rice.
Once the others left, Qin Jian whispered, "When can I be a godfather?"
"The baby isn't even on the way yet; if you want to be a godfather, go ask Fat."
"Haha, you're something else!" Qin Jian said as he pulled out a document from his briefcase. I noticed a large red seal on it, with a signature line for Ma Qi at the bottom. He had really thought this through and even brought a pen.
"What is this?"
"After your grandfather's passing, the contract between Ma Wu Funeral Home and the Station has become void. It seems you haven't formally signed a contract with the Station yet. This document is your official agreement for cooperation with the Station. Once you sign it, you'll receive a payment within a month. However, if there's work at the Station, no matter where you are, you must report there immediately upon notification."
I remember my grandfather's contract with the Station. What was it all about? It was just helping to inspect corpses, cleaning the body, and handling posthumous affairs. I certainly didn't want to follow in my grandfather's footsteps and become one of those filial grandsons dealing with the bizarre deaths of nameless individuals.
I hadn't seen the contract and firmly refused Qin Jian's request for my signature.
"Ma Qi, I know what you're thinking, but you should take a look at the contract first." Qin Jian pushed the document toward me, urging me to read it.
I sighed heavily, picked up the contract, and recalled how envious I had initially been of my grandfather's relationship with the Station. I had even thought that after my grandfather, I could also collaborate with them. However, after experiencing so much, I realized that being free and unbound by anyone's constraints was much better. Plus, after personally assisting my grandfather with a task arranged by the Station, I understood that it wasn't anything good, which led to my earlier refusal.
After reviewing the contract, I thought perhaps my previous reaction had been a bit hasty. This contract was entirely different from what my grandfather had dealt with; it required me to assist Qin Jian in investigating unresolved cases and stated that for every case solved, there would be a reward of fifty thousand dollars.
Fifty thousand dollars! I'd have to take on several jobs and find generous clients to earn that much. Plus, it was quite a decent sum compared to a month's salary.
"I need to bring Fatty along."
