Chapter 51: The Evil Spirit Appears
Qin Jian walked with me toward the door when he suddenly said, "Could it be that we saw it wrong?" But the way Chi Xinrong had acted didn’t seem like a mistake; she must have seen something that terrified her so much.
“Shh! Let’s go take a look,” I said, leading the way while Qin Jian followed behind. The others hesitated at the entrance, including Mi, who was too scared to move an inch because of what had happened with Chi Xinrong.
At that moment, the entire street was eerily quiet. The sound of mice fighting near a few trash bins broke the silence, and from somewhere came the cry of a cat, causing several mice to scurry away in a panic. Behind me, several pairs of eyes nervously followed my movements. Once inside, I clicked the light switch.
Click, click—
After several attempts, the light didn’t turn on, but I could feel something in the room. The streetlight outside illuminated just enough for me to see a bit; once inside, it was pitch black. I had my phone, and so did Qin Jian. We both instinctively pulled out our phones at almost the same moment. Under the Mobile Flashlight's glow, we saw a tall figure standing at the door of the dark room, staring blankly at us. Dressed in dark blue clothes and wearing a flat cap, he had a shiny bald head, narrow eyes filled with wrinkles, a high nose also covered in wrinkles, and thin lips—it was my grandfather, Ma Wu.
“Grandpa…”
“What? He’s your grandfather?”
“Sort of.” My grandfather didn’t respond but instead took heavy steps toward me. A strange thought crossed my mind: this must be a dream; I was dreaming. In this dream, everyone was here—my friends and my loved ones.
My grandfather had died long ago.
I pointed my Mobile Flashlight directly at him. He continued to approach us while Qin Jian and I stood frozen in uncertainty.
“Ma Qi, is he human or something else?”
“Let’s shine our lights on him together.”
Qin Jian agreed with a nod as we both directed our Mobile Flashlights at him. His dried-out skin revealed murky gray eyes devoid of life, and his nostrils flared slightly. Suddenly, he opened his mouth and called out to me: “Qi… Grandpa has come back.”
“No, you’re not my grandfather; my grandfather has been dead for a long time.”
"Seven, I am your grandfather. Come, let me take a look at you."
"No..." I refused.
"Ma Qi, use your ultimate move," Qin Jian reminded.
I hesitated for a moment; after all, he was my grandfather. He had returned on his own, perhaps with no ill intentions. With that thought in mind, I slowly moved to take action. Suddenly, my grandfather's murky eyes turned completely white, and his mouth stretched wide open, splitting to the roots of his ears. From that gaping maw flew out countless bats.
The sudden scene startled me, making me gasp in shock. Qin Jian frantically waved his hands to drive away the bats swirling above us. Outside, Mi and Chi Xinrong screamed in terror; the once calm Mi had transformed into a restless monkey, jumping around and scratching his head in confusion.
Chirp chirp chirp—chirp chirp chirp! The room was filled with the screeching sounds of bats. The bats pouring out of my grandfather's mouth filled the entire shop space like a dark cloud. If one dared to catch them without fear of being bitten, they could easily grab several at once.
Strangely enough, the bats seemed to be wary of me; they circled above my head but showed no intention of attacking. Meanwhile, Qin Jian was already dizzy from trying to fend off the bats and was losing his sense of direction. If this continued, he would be in trouble. My intuition told me that the reason the bats didn't dare approach me was because of the treasures given to me by Qin Ye.
One was the Eighteen Cubes, and the other was a short dagger. With these two items, I could easily handle these foul-smelling cold-blooded creatures without much effort.
"Lao Qin, you go outside."
"What about you?"
"I'm stronger than you; I'll stay here to deal with these cold-blooded creatures." Both Qin Jian and I knew that bats were afraid of light. The Mobile Flashlight's beam was too weak. By sending Qin Jian outside, I hoped he could quickly gather some torches. Since the bats didn't dare approach me, I could move freely inside the room, ensuring that Qin Jian wouldn't be harmed by them.
I opened the door and let the disheveled Qin Jian step outside.
Then I slammed the door shut with a bang. The metallic sound startled all the bats in the room again, causing their high-pitched cries to erupt once more. The cacophony pierced my eardrums and seeped into my brain, making it hard to concentrate.
I looked at my grandfather—the bat-spewing monster—still standing in his old position, looking as steadfast as ever.
I held the Exorcism Talisman in my hand, chanting incantations and preparing to strike when suddenly, the monster grandfather reached out and tore open his abdomen. A swarm of black Bats flew out, and then a pair of hands emerged from his belly, hastening the tearing of his flesh.
This scene left me utterly stunned.
I had never witnessed such a horrifying sight before; it was natural for women to give birth, but for a man to have another person emerge from his belly—what did that even mean? As I stood there in shock, a dreadful premonition washed over me: something terrifying was about to come forth.
Sure enough, from those hands emerged a complete, hunched figure.
"Ma Qi, long time no see."
"Li Gui..."
Without a doubt, he was Li Gui. I hadn’t expected that Li Gui would fail to resurrect during the Ghost Festival when Yin Qi was at its peak and instead would take refuge in grandfather's shell to be reborn. Damn it, this time his resurrection would bring more than just one death; something far more horrific was bound to happen.
I had to stop him at this moment of rebirth.
Li Gui twisted his body and extended a long, slender tongue like some kind of creature, whipping towards me with a whoosh. Damn! Li Gui had transformed into an abomination. I swiftly dodged his attack and threw a talisman while chanting an incantation, causing an explosion that echoed through the room.
Bats swirled all around us.
Were the Bats providing cover?
Li Gui chose to reveal himself while targeting only me; there had to be some other sinister plot at play. The appearance of grandfather just now was undoubtedly part of Li Gui's scheme—using human kindness to lure me into a trap.
Damn you, Li Gui! Time and again you push my limits; this time, you won't escape unscathed.
In desperation, I pulled out the Short-Handled Evil-Slaying Dagger. However, no matter how much I tugged or shook it, I couldn’t draw the dagger out. What the hell! There was no time to think further; I tossed the dagger aside and chanted the Five Thunder Spell to prevent Li Gui from closing in on me.
If I wasn't mistaken, his next plan was to charge at me. After using up the last of my grandfather's energy, he would occupy my body and transform into Ma Qi.
Just when we were locked in a fierce struggle, Qin Jian burst in, holding a torch high. The torch sent the bats flying in a panic, creating chaos everywhere.
Without the bats to assist him, Li Gui charged straight at me, his ghostly claws extending and retracting with ease. He showed no fear of Qin Jian's torch and even knocked it out of his hand. With the threat of the torch gone, the bats became bold again.
I couldn't afford to drag this out any longer; if this continued, Qin Jian would definitely be at a disadvantage.
"Pick up the dagger on the ground." As Qin Jian picked up the dagger, he suddenly gained confidence. With a swift motion, he drew the dagger and swung it at the bats. The moment he thrust the dagger forward, a bright flash appeared, and a large character for Qin emerged like an exploding firework, almost blinding me.
My brother is amazing! This dagger was given to me by Qin Ye. I had struggled to draw it earlier, but I never expected Qin Jian to pull it out effortlessly and wield it like a pro.
Seeing that Qin Jian had obtained such a miraculous weapon, Li Gui became furious and accelerated his attacks on me. We exchanged blows back and forth; I was looking for his weaknesses while he sought opportunities to seize me.
In no time at all, Qin Jian had eliminated most of the bats in the room. The fallen bats turned to dust as they hit the ground. With each bat that died, I could feel Li Gui's energy diminish slightly.
