Chapter 4: The Bewitching Spell
I let them speak one by one. One person trembled, his whole body shaking, his face changing colors as he said, “Master Ma, hurry! Something’s wrong; Zhu Gang seems to be sleepwalking.”
Could it be a bewitching spell? Impossible. I’m here; who would dare? Unless it’s Li Gui, but that’s unlikely. He wouldn’t risk coming out at this time, especially since he’s a defeated foe of mine. How could he appear without recovering his Primordial Spirit? If it’s not Li Gui, then what could it be? Thinking carefully, I realized it might be Zhu Gui. I quickly asked, “Where is he?”
“He’s almost at the door. No matter how we called out just now, he ignored us. It’s so eerie.”
“Could it be his father calling him?” One fool chimed in, causing everyone else to reach out and hit him on the head in fright.
Hearing this made my heart skip a beat, and recalling the dream I had earlier filled me with unease. I hurriedly grabbed my gear and rushed outside. After a few steps, I felt like I had forgotten something and turned back to look at the mourning hall. I didn’t know who had placed the candles too close to the portrait; two streams of wax resembled tears of blood running down the frame. The flickering candlelight cast eerie shadows, and with the Ice Coffin being too dark inside, the entire mourning hall appeared particularly sinister and strange. I turned to one of the people with me and said, “Go check what’s wrong with the portrait.”
“I... I’m scared…”
“Forget it; just go check on Zhu Gang.”
Zhu Gang stood there like a wooden puppet, his hands hanging limply at his sides, eyes vacant as he stared ahead, seemingly entranced by something as he continued walking forward. When I caught up to him, I raised my hand to stop those following me, urging them to slow down as we trailed behind him.
There were others behind me.
A string of dark figures moved through the night toward forbidden grounds. The people following me dared not retreat; they were worried about Zhu Gang. But as we approached the dense forest of forbidden grounds, they all halted.
“Master Ma, has he been possessed or what?”
“Shh!”
I let them go back; there was no one at Zhu Gang's house yet!
They nodded and pointed at Zhu Gang. I gestured, "Don't worry, I'm here. The reason I stayed behind is to prevent any accidents."
A few of them nodded in the darkness, ready to turn back, their pace noticeably quicker than when they arrived. Before long, they had disappeared into the distance.
Now it was just Zhu Gang and me standing outside the forbidden area.
Zhu Gang seemed to be waiting for something. Shortly after, a piercing shriek echoed from the forest, like an arrow slicing through the air. After the sound, Zhu Gang moved, still in a rigid posture as he stepped inside. I hurried to follow him.
As we entered the woods, I activated my Demon Eyes. The evil spirits here were not unfamiliar with me; as soon as I appeared, they retreated. However, the branches were thickly covered with bats. Upon seeing Zhu Gang enter, they suddenly whirled into the air, their incessant chattering filling the air.
Zhu Gang collapsed to his knees with a thud as the bats spun around and charged at him in a swirling mass of darkness.
I quickly formed a hand seal and recited the Five Thunder Spell: "Five Thunder Three Thousand Generals, countless thunder soldiers, flames burning across all realms, evil spirits turned to dust. Able to slay thousands of demons and ghosts—evil spirits of earth, year, month, day, and time—banish the unclean energies. I invoke the Nine Responses of the Primordial Thunder Sound Universal Decree and Taishang Laojun's Urgent Command."
As I unleashed the Five Thunder Palm, a beam of light shot towards the swarm of bats attacking Zhu Gang. A series of explosive sounds erupted as righteousness clashed with evil; they collided violently, sparks flying everywhere. The bat swarm scattered in all directions—some perished, others were injured—instantly collapsing into chaos like a black king of hell trying to flee.
I pointed at the Soul Lock Talisman but still couldn't ensnare all the bats. Zhu Gang hung his head like a lifeless corpse, completely lost in his mind and kneeling on the ground. Despite the commotion around him, he remained oblivious.
This swarm of bats was massive; were they primarily feeding on human blood? Was it human interference or some evil spirit at work?
In my confusion, I flicked out an Awakening Talisman and placed it three inches below the back of Zhu Gang's head before gently tapping his spiritual point and saying "Awaken."
Zhu Gang shuddered all over and opened his eyes in shock, asking, "Master Ma, how did I end up here?"
"You've been deceived by filthy things; hurry back with me." As I scanned the ground, I suddenly froze. Just a moment ago, I had clearly seen many bats piling up at my feet and on the ground, but now there wasn't a single one in sight.
This is too bizarre!
"Master Ma, what are you looking for?"
"Nothing, let's go back." I blocked out the Demon Eyes, choosing not to see those wandering spirits. I also didn't want to have any direct confrontation with the Evil Spirit Collector sent by the Underworld to search for these lost souls. Ever since Qin Ye gave me this multifunctional Yin Yang Mobile, it felt like I had been handed a pass to the realm of Yin and Yang. I no longer had to worry about the Evil Spirit Collector; the wandering spirits no longer acted so arrogantly when they saw me; they simply avoided me.
I walked out of the forest with Zhu Gang. He was still pondering what had happened to him. "Master Ma, I saw my dad; he called out to me..."
"And then?"
"He was wearing a black outfit and wanted to take my mom away. I was scared, so I knelt down."
"Illusion. Your father is dead, and your mother was misdiagnosed; she will be fine soon. She won't come to harm. What you saw just now was all an illusion. If I hadn't been here, you would have been devoured and turned into a pile of bones."
"Huh?"
"I don't know how this group of extraordinary Ghost Bats exists or how they evolved into these flesh-eating ghostly creatures, but I will find out."
"Okay."
As we were heading toward Zhu Gang's house, a beam of bright flashlight shone directly into my face. I quickly raised my hand to block the light and asked, "Who is it?"
The person seemed relieved to see that Zhu Gang was okay and hurriedly said, "Master Ma, it's bad; you need to hurry back and take a look."
"What happened?" I asked. They replied: "No, it's just evil..." "Then don't." ZhuGang and I quickened our pace and took a shortcut to his house quickly. When I arrived at his house, I went straight to the mourning hall and saw an incredible scene. Just when we followed Zhu Gang to the forbidden area, a crack as thick as a thumb appeared on one side of Ice Coffin, and the power supply started to catch fire for no reason. . I saw that the Electrical Outlet was burnt black, the color was abnormal, and the holes were too dense, which was inconsistent with the regular Electrical Outlet. Me: "Electrical Outlet is a fake product and will definitely be burned. This is nothing to blame." I squatted down and looked at the cracked gap in Ice Coffin. A bunch of squirming things caught my eye and made me click on it. I took out the candle and looked at it, and I was so surprised that cold air ran down my back. This bunch of squirming things is none other than ants. The army of ants crawled into the power-off coffin, covering the body with black Sheet. For a moment, I couldn’t tell whether it was an ant or a Sheet. At that moment, I chanted Soul Requiem to comfort Zhu Gui Zai Zhiling is not surprised, it is for his own good, and this group of Carnivorous Ants of unknown origin must be eliminated.
