Chapter 19: A Switcheroo
"That's not untrue," said Mi's Mother.
Typically, those who are considered unlucky are met with cold water thrown at them when they arrive. I am not an unlucky person, but I make a living serving the dead, so I understood her words and had no reason to be angry.
Smart people know that at this moment and in this place, not only should I not get angry, but I also had to put on a facade and let others slap my face.
"Auntie, Uncle, I'm not here to cause trouble. Mi and I are in love, so I ask for your blessing." I did not kneel to plead for their approval; my grandfather taught me that a man should never kneel unless it’s for something truly significant.
The strange man looked at me and sneered, "A poor loser wants to marry? If you can come up with five hundred bucks, I'll let you take Mi with you." This guy was truly brazen; five hundred bucks—it's not that I didn’t have it, but even if I did, I wouldn’t comply with his demands.
His tone clearly treated Mi like an object for sale. What was even more infuriating was that Han's Parents seemed completely unconcerned by their grandson's words. Were they bewitched or had they lost their minds?
I clenched my fists tightly, maintaining a calm demeanor as I walked closer. The strange man didn’t even regard me; instead, he pulled out a box of expensive cigarettes and lit one with an electronic lighter. Just as he was about to take a puff, I reached him and struck.
Bang—there was a dull thud as blood poured from his nostrils. He covered his bleeding nose and stumbled back in shock. "What... what are you doing?"
"What am I doing? I'm here to teach you a lesson. She is my Ma Qi's woman; how dare you lay a finger on her?"
"You... she..." The strange man appeared strong but was nothing more than a coward. Seeing me advance, he turned tail and fled in panic. Moments later, the sound of a car horn echoed from outside; the white car drove away, leaving space for the red Xiali Car.
Han Mi stared at me blankly, her pale face showing no hint of happiness.
"Mi."
She stood there like a wooden post, completely motionless. Suddenly, someone lunged at me.
I barely had time to react when Mi's Mother charged at me, roaring in fury, "Ma Qi, go die! You’re not welcome here!" She slapped me hard across the face. Anger surged through me; I wanted nothing more than to slap her back.
At that moment, Mi suddenly spoke up, "Ma Qi, no, I'm going with you."
"That ungrateful girl, if you dare to go with him, don't ever come back. Also, I raised you and fed you; you owe me for the milk money." Mi's mother revealed her fierce nature, reaching out for money.
I took out my cash, my eyes fixed on Mi, afraid that if I blinked, she would disappear. I had dreamed countless times of her being taken away by a kite; this time, she was right in front of me, and I wouldn't let her go.
I opened the wallet and pulled out the first fifty-dollar bill to hand to Mi's mother. She accepted it and said, "Her father has an incurable disease and has borrowed a lot of money from relatives; you need to pay me back."
I nodded, still keeping my gaze on Mi. "I'll pay it back, definitely! Money is just paper; we can earn it and spend it!"
Upon hearing this, Mi's eyes became moist. She threw herself into my arms without regard for her parents being present and kissed me on the lips. The electric sensation spread through me; it felt so damn good. This moment was too magical. I was lost in the joy of our reunion and casually handed more money to Mi's mother.
Suddenly, I heard an angry roar: "Ma Qi, how dare you fool me..."
Reluctantly turning my head to look back at her, I was shocked—Mi's mother was holding a one-hundred-million-dollar bill of Hell Money. Oh no! Did Fatty swap my money? I didn't have time to explain; there was no reasoning with a fierce woman. Without hesitation, I scooped up Mi and dashed towards the door. Just as Mi's mother was chasing us, I shoved her into the Xiali Car. "Hurry up, let's get out of here!"
"Ma Qi, you son of a bitch!" Mi's mother yelled as we got into the car and found the doors locked.
The Xiali Car driver was impressive; his reversing skills were top-notch as he shook off the furious woman. The car drove smoothly along the rural road. Mi held my hand tightly while the driver chuckled and teased, "Don't be shy newlyweds; are you two newlyweds?"
"Uncle, stop joking. You see, her mother doesn't want me to take her away because she's afraid I won't make her happy."
"Good things often come with difficulties. As long as you cook raw rice into cooked rice, next year you'll come back with a big fat baby; all grievances will be forgotten."
"Thank you, Uncle."
Mi rested her head against my chest as tears streamed down her face.
"What's wrong? Don't cry, let's talk it out." Seeing her in tears made my heart ache, and I didn't know how to comfort her.
"Ma Qi, I thought I would never be with you in this lifetime. I'm scared, my parents..."
"Shh, let's go home and talk, okay?" I gently wiped away her tears, holding her tightly as I felt her body tremble. I lowered my voice and asked, "Are you cold?"
"No, I'm just scared."
"Don't be afraid. I'm here; there's nothing to be scared of."
"Mm."
The driver glanced at us through the rearview mirror but didn't say anything, just accelerated and drove us forward.
Before long, we arrived at Ma Wu Funeral Home. Fat had already tidied up most of the place. When he saw me return with Mi, he initially wanted to complain but instead greeted us with a big smile, "Mi's here?"
"Call her sister-in-law," I commanded Fat.
He responded with an "Oh," and brought a glass of water to Mi. I pulled Fat into the room.
"Brother Qi, what are you doing? Acting all mysterious?"
"Bring it here."
"What do you mean?"
I had intended to shout but held back for Mi's sake. Instead, my voice came out as a suppressed growl filled with anger: "Money. You exchanged the money from my drawer for Hell Money. Don't think I don't know."
"Brother Qi, that's unfair! I don't even know where you hide your money, so how could I have swapped it?" The plump man didn't seem to be lying, which puzzled me. Remembering that Mi was still outside, I waved my hand and said, "Alright then, you go ahead and do your thing. Tonight, I'm going to stay outside with Mi."
"No way! Your brother just got back; is it really okay for him to go out like this?"
"What do you suggest? We can't just leave Mi here and risk her wandering into the dark room and lying in the coffin like last time."
"That's true. How about you call Chi Xinrong to come over?" The plump man's suggestion made sense. I didn't want to take advantage of the situation or do anything reckless. Besides, she was the woman I loved; I wanted to protect her, not take advantage of her.
With that thought in mind, I stepped outside to discuss it with Mi.
"Mi, are you staying here tonight, or should I call Chi Xinrong to come pick you up and take you with her?"
A slight blush appeared on Mi's face as her beautiful brows furrowed slightly. She whispered, "Brother Qi, you decide. I'll follow your lead."
"Then you'll go to Rong Jie's place?"
