Chapter 00: The Return of Fat
I ignored him and hung up the phone. I switched to running mode and headed straight for Fat's hospital room. Chi Xinrong was still there, and upon seeing me rush in, she quickly stood up and asked, "What happened?"
"Nothing, nothing," I replied as I looked at Fat. Although his complexion was still pale, he seemed much better than before, with the IV fluid flowing normally. I believed that it wouldn't be long before he was up and about.
"Rongrong, promise me one thing."
"What is it?"
"I'm going to a place now. Can you help keep an eye on Fat? Remember, you need to take care of everything related to him personally; don't be careless."
Fat grinned widely at my request.
"You're getting cocky!" I shook my fist at him. "Hurry up and recover; we have big things to do." I took off the charm from my neck; it still contained some fragrant ash. This was given to me by the High Monk from Ten-Mile Temple, and thanks to this charm, I managed to drive the Li Gui out of my body with my limited skills.
Although I hadn't formally confronted Li Gui this time, I still dealt him a fatal blow. Don't underestimate me, Ma Qi; I'm a potential stock. One day, I'll make sure that old Li Gui is left with no chance to fight back.
Fat made a 'K' gesture with his hand. I added, "If anything unusual appears, use this charm."
After giving Chi Xinrong a few brief instructions, I hurried toward the hospital entrance. As I reached the door, she softly called out to me, "Ma Qi..."
"What?" I turned back to look at Chi Xinrong. Although her face was calm, her ears had unknowingly turned red.
Chi Xinrong hesitated for a moment, moving her lips but lowering her head as if she had something difficult to say. Finally, seeing how anxious I was to leave, she raised her head and gazed at me deeply: "Be careful; I'll be waiting for your return..." I noticed that her face grew even redder as she spoke, like someone who had drunk red wine.
On the other hand, Fat's expression darkened. He awkwardly stared at the gaps in the wall tiles, remaining motionless like a piece of lifeless wood.
"You both remember to stay alert at all times. You can take turns sleeping, but don't let anything happen again."
Fat replied dryly, "Don't worry!" Chi Xinrong remained silent as she watched me leave through the door; even from behind it, I could still feel her gaze on me.
Women are truly troublesome.
I thought of Peng Yan, that troublesome spirit. It felt strange that she had appeared this time, yet I couldn't pinpoint what was odd about it. What puzzled me was that I clearly saw her enter the room of the fat patient, but I didn't see her inside.
This was also something that worried me.
With a heavy heart, I ran toward the hospital entrance. Qin Jian arrived quickly, carrying a large bag of things meant for me.
The moment he saw me standing there perfectly fine, he was undoubtedly surprised. "Ma Qi, what are you doing? Didn't you get hurt badly?"
Noticing him staring intently into my eyes, I smiled and said, "I'm fine."
As I got into the car, Qin Jian followed suit. He had no place to put the items he was carrying, so I waved to the parking attendant.
The parking attendant quickly glanced at me and deliberately shifted her gaze elsewhere.
"Auntie, over here..."
The parking attendant pointed to herself and, seeing no one else around, slowly walked over to us.
I extended my hands with the fruit and milk that Qin Jian had bought for me. "Auntie, you've worked hard. Please accept these and enjoy them."
The parking attendant eyed Qin Jian suspiciously before looking back at me, her expression filled with doubt. "What do you mean by this?" She didn't reach out to take the items.
"Auntie, these are yours now. If you don't mind, please take them."
The fruits Qin Jian bought were all seasonal and worth at least two hundred yuan. Seeing so much being offered to her made the aunt hesitate in disbelief; she stood there awkwardly, not willing to take them but also reluctant to leave empty-handed.
"Auntie, we have urgent matters to attend to. If you accept these items, it would really help me out."
Hearing my sincere tone, the aunt finally took the fruits with many thanks.
I added, "Auntie, please go to Room Eight and help take care of a patient for me." I then pulled out three hundred yuan and handed it over.
The Parking Attendant hesitated for a moment and shook her head. "No, I can't help you with that. I'm still on duty until the last shift ends."
"Auntie, we have a connection. After your shift, you can go to Room Eight. He's my brother; if you mention me, he'll believe you."
Hearing this, the Parking Attendant relaxed and accepted the money without hesitation. "Alright then, I'll take care of the car and head straight to Room Eight to look after the patient." She walked a few steps but then paused, puzzled. Just then, Qin Jian started the car, preparing to leave. She suddenly tapped on the window and asked, "How did you know I work part-time caring for patients?"
I had guessed she worked part-time from the medicinal scent on her.
But I didn't reveal that; instead, I feigned mystery. "Because I understand Mystical Arts and can calculate things."
"Impressive," the Parking Attendant said as she watched us leave. After we had driven quite a distance, I looked back and saw she was still staring at us.
"Ma Qi, you're amazing! How did you figure out she works part-time caring for patients?"
"I'm not amazing, nor do I have my grandfather's skills. I just caught a whiff of medicine on her. The key is that this woman must have killed quite a few creatures in her daily life—like chickens, ducks, and fish."
"Why do you say that?"
"She has an innate aura of killing energy about her. It's what people refer to as presence; hers is extraordinary. So if she's in the ward, Fatty and Chi Xinrong won't run into trouble."
"Oh," Qin Jian said, suddenly enlightened. After thinking for a moment, he joked, "You know, using flowers to offer to Buddha has its uses—pretty clever."
"Of course."
"Enough with that; it's getting dark. Where are you headed?"
"To Ten Li Slope."
"Where's Ten Li Slope?"
"We'll manage with the GPS." I instructed Qin Jian to pull over so he could set up the navigation on his phone. However, to our surprise, there was no listing for Ten Li Slope on the GPS at all.
"Zibei, I didn't remind you, but Ten Li Slope isn't even on the map of China, right?"
"It definitely is. I promised to go to Ten Li Slope to help her."
Qin Jian put away his phone and casually asked, "Who is it?"
"A person you don't know. She was harmed and abandoned at Ten Li Slope, so I want you to be a witness and find a way to catch the perpetrator to appease her grievances."
"Whoa, you don't mean she's a ghost, do you?" Qin Jian said half-jokingly, half-seriously.
"Yes, she is a female ghost named Bone Jade."
"Ugh! I'm getting chills." Qin Jian wasn't exaggerating; he genuinely felt uneasy. At that moment, mentioning bones along with the many people burning Joss Paper along the way made him shiver. However, he wasn't too convinced about my story regarding Bone Jade.
"Ma Qi, I believe in Mystical Arts, but I really don't believe that bones can turn into ghosts."
