Chapter 198: The Resentful Woman's Obsession
Peng Yan's eyes sparkled, her mouth slightly agape, disbelief etched across her face as she grasped my hand tightly. "Do you know? I've been waiting for you to say that for so long that the flowers are about to wither. When I saw you, I couldn't believe it was really you. I was so happy I cried, ignoring Head Nurse's scolding. I hid in the bathroom and made myself look beautiful just to appear before you. Brother Qi, thank you for still thinking of me..."
Damn! This lovesick woman had fallen for a heartless man, and that heartless man was me. I shouldn't have gotten involved with this troublemaker, but for Fatty and Chi Xinrong, I had no choice but to use my charm to seek help from this troublesome girl. I feigned sincerity, placing my hands on her trembling shoulders. "Don't cry. Brother Qi promises to treat you well from now on, as long as you help me open this door..." I pointed toward the intensive care unit door. Peng Yan followed my finger and then stared at me intently, biting her lip as if she had made a significant decision. She nodded vigorously and then turned to run a few steps away, blowing me a kiss. I shivered slightly, telling myself that as long as I got this done, I could quickly disappear from this troublemaker's sight.
I had no idea how Peng Yan managed to get the key to the intensive care unit; I never cared about the process as long as I achieved my goal. Once inside, I had to admit that Peng Yan was obedient and docile. When I asked her to stand guard outside, she complied without hesitation.
I began casting spells despite my recently recovered strength, channeling energy toward Chi Xinrong to release her soul from Dark City. A few minutes later, I was drenched in sweat as I noticed Chi Xinrong's brow furrowing and her fingers twitching. She couldn't leave immediately; instead, I positioned her sideways and took a prepared cinnabar pen to draw a protective talisman three inches below the back of her head before hastily exiting the intensive care unit.
As I had anticipated, the first thing Chi Xinrong would do upon waking was come looking for me.
Being in Dark City is different from Soul Separation. In Dark City, memories are not automatically erased; however, in Soul Separation, it's akin to switching systems in a game—everything inside has to change accordingly. The same principle applies when a person's soul leaves their body.
My grandfather once dealt with a Life Yin spirit that often possessed him; it could lead to real death. So when I woke up feeling weak, Chi Xinrong would not feel weak at all; her memories would remain intact.
In her memory, I had once possessed her body and even gone to the bathroom—asking some rather embarrassing questions along the way.
The red light in the intensive care unit blinked; people were running around shouting, "Chi Xinrong has awakened."
"You saved her; why didn't you let her know?" Peng Yan dutifully escorted me to Room 24 but showed no intention of leaving, staying by my side and chatting.
I ignored Peng Yan's question and deflected instead: "Aren't you supposed to be doing something?" In truth, I wanted to send Peng Yan away so that I could implement my second plan: find Fatty's body for Chi Xinrong to take care of and return to Ma Wu Funeral Home with a guiding talisman to bring Fatty's soul back.
Peng Yan smiled lightly. "Intern nurses are like that; there's not much to do except guard their assigned patients."
"Who assigned you here?"
"It was Head Nurse."
"Oh."
"How is your father doing?"
"He's dead."
"I'm sorry."
Peng Yan forced a smile. "Every day people die, and others are born. The cycle of life is endless; there's really no need to apologize for that."
I was surprised by her nonchalance. The death of her loved one seemed as casual to her as discussing someone else's affairs. The cold, unfeeling genes of Peng Kaifu had been passed down to his daughter.
"So, what about your brother, Peng Hai?"
"My dad is dead. He secretly turned into a thief and will have to stay in prison for eight years."
I remembered that Peng Hai liked playing games; he was actually quite smart, but the environment shapes a person. In such a family setting, it was impossible for any miraculous figures to emerge. Fortunately, Peng Yan was on the right path, working as an intern nurse—quite commendable.
As I comforted myself with these thoughts, Peng Yan suddenly needed to step out. I was eager for her to leave, so I nodded in agreement.
Just after Peng Yan left, two nurses knocked and entered. "Dean Chi's niece wants to see you."
What was meant to come would always arrive; there was no escaping it, especially since I needed to use Chi Xinrong to find Fatty.
Chi Xinrong had just been transferred from the intensive care unit to regular Room 18, reportedly because she wanted to stay in a regular ward. Only I knew that her purpose for being in the regular ward was to see me. The atmosphere in the regular ward was warm and homely, unlike the strictness of the special ward where family members had to sign multiple forms and adhere to strict visiting hours.
I was currently in Room 24, which was also a regular ward. When I woke up, I found myself in Room 24 but still in a regular ward.
I saw Chi Xinrong. The bedside table was piled high with various seasonal fresh fruits, and under the bed were nutritional supplements. She lay lazily against a specially elevated pillow and looked up as she heard footsteps. Putting down what she had been reading, she glanced at me and chuckled, "You’re here?"
She surprisingly wasn't angry or explosive towards me; I felt a bit puzzled as I took a seat on the edge of her bed at her invitation. There was also a nurse in the room taking her temperature and jotting something down. The nurse glanced at me with a smile before silently exiting.
"Why aren't you talking?" Chi Xinrong asked impatiently as soon as the nurse left.
"To make a long story short, Fatty is in danger, and you have the privilege to go find him at the mortuary."
Chi Xinrong looked shocked and asked, "What happened to Fatty?"
"Don't you remember what happened?"
Chi Xinrong shook her head with a confused expression. "Someone... I fainted... It felt like I had a long dream..." I gazed at her in silence as she continued summarizing, "Oh right, I dreamed about you and someone very scary... Oh dear, there was Fatty; I can't remember anything about him."
“Rongrong, this matter is complicated. What you experienced was not a dream; it really happened. Fat needs your help urgently. You must find his true self by the time I return to the hospital. Once you find him, treat him as you would a patient, so that I can save him.”
“Is it that serious? I thought you were joking. What dream was real…” At this point, Chi Xinrong's face flushed crimson, spreading all the way to her neck.
“I'll explain everything later. Right now, time is of the essence. I need to leave the hospital to get something from the store.”
“What is it?”
I stood up and waved my hand at Chi Xinrong. “Don’t ask so many questions; I’ll be back soon.” I dashed out of the hospital, still feeling a bit dazed. Calling out to the stone in my pocket yielded no response; that dark stone was just sitting there, devoid of any spiritual energy.
Perhaps what just happened was a dream for me but reality for Chi Xinrong.
Has the stone run out of energy? It needs to go to a place with abundant Spirit Energy to absorb it and recover its strength.
