Chapter 14: Ghost Month Taboos (Part Four)
I was puzzled. He had previously told me that it was best if we didn't meet up casually, mentioning something about a single line of contact. Now he was boldly coming to find me, not afraid of being recognized? Fortunately, he was in disguise, wearing a casual shirt and deliberately sporting a pair of ripped jeans, looking nothing like a People's Police officer. There was an aura about him, an Evil Energy that exuded a fearless bravado.
I greeted him first and then, out of habit, asked, "Qin Jian, what happened at the hospital just now?"
"Come on, let's walk and talk," Qin Jian said casually, draping his arm over my shoulder. A certain Deathly Aura made me want to stomp my feet; he dared to ignore our Sister Chi. I secretly chuckled at the thought of her getting angry, imagining her princess syndrome flaring up.
In the end, I kindly reminded him, "Qin Jian, seriously, your emotional intelligence is hard to bear. You clearly saw there were beautiful women around me; you should at least greet them!"
Qin Jian looked quite embarrassed and stopped in his tracks to extend his hand toward Chi Xinrong with an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I was careless just now."
Chi Xinrong's tone dripped with sarcasm as she didn’t take his hand but walked past him, leaving behind a parting shot: "Sorry, I didn’t notice your existence either."
Watching Chi Xinrong breeze past like a gust of wind, Qin Jian clicked his tongue in disbelief and lowered his voice. "Ma Qi, why does your girlfriend act like a chili pepper?"
"Qin Jian, listen carefully; she’s not my girlfriend. But she is spicy—her fiery temperament could burn someone alive. So keep that in mind."
He played along with my words and exaggeratedly wiped his face as if scared. Then he dramatically flung his hand down toward the ground. "Oh man, I’m sweating bullets here!"
"Haha!" We both burst into hearty laughter. Our laughter echoed through the entire corridor. When Chi Xinrong heard it and turned back to glare at me, I couldn’t help but silently laugh again at her animated expressions.
Qin Jian didn’t laugh; he seemed to be reflecting on his earlier antics without a hint of amusement. "She’s not your girlfriend; you’re lucky. But I remember you have a girlfriend too—what was her name again? Something with rice?"
"It’s Da Mi—just Da Mi! And she’s someone I can only enjoy alone."
"Haha, you’re really funny." Qin Jian rarely smiled like this; this time he laughed several times in succession.
"Tell me what happened."
"What do you think about the haunted hospital?" Qin Jian moved his hand away and walked briskly beside me.
I casually replied, "Aren't you afraid of ghosts with your talisman?"
Qin Jian stopped in his tracks and looked at me seriously. "I don't have a talisman."
"Isn't that around your neck?" My curiosity piqued as I noticed the string around his neck.
Qin Jian reached for the string and said, "This doesn't seem like a talisman; it's just half of something."
Half of a Five Emperor Coin! I was taken aback. The half of the Five Emperor Coin that Uncle Luo gave me—I didn't even know where it was. It should be a whole piece compared to the one Qin Jian had. I couldn't help but reach out to touch the half of the Five Emperor Coin tied to the Red Silk Rope.
Qin Jian pulled back and muttered, "My mom doesn't allow random touching."
"Oh." I awkwardly withdrew my hand, my mind racing back to a thought. This half of the Five Emperor Coin should belong to Qin Ye; how did it end up with Qin Jian?
Qin Jian tucked the Five Emperor Coin back under his neck and, seeing that I was still distracted, asked, "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing much, just wondering what your ghost situation is all about!"
Qin Jian continued walking and said, "Last night, my colleague had a bowel obstruction. I brought him here and waited until he was stable before leaving. Just as I was leaving, I overheard something from a nurse."
"A nurse? You believe what nurses say? You must have a crush on one of the beauties here!"
"Don't interrupt; let me finish."
According to my logical reasoning, the stories in a hospital are nothing more than those of nurses and doctors, or perhaps patients? My mind was preoccupied with the matter of the Monkey Spirit, so I had little patience to listen to this person recounting thrilling tales of nurses and doctors.
"What are you thinking about? What I'm going to tell you isn't about those nurse and doctor issues; it's about a patient."
"Right, a patient." Qin Jian spoke quickly, unable to remember the patient's name. In any case, something very strange happened to this patient last night.
The patient was severely injured, with a sharp object having pierced through the scalp, barely missing the skull by two centimeters, which could have cost him his life.
Typically, someone in such a condition would be lying in bed recovering, but unexpectedly, in the dead of night, strange sounds and ghostly whispers emanated from the patient's room. The family members were frightened and turned on the lights; at that moment, the eerie sounds abruptly ceased.
The room was empty except for the patient, who was desperately trying to struggle. His bloodshot eyes were wide open, as large as a cow's eyes. His mouth was agape but no sound escaped. It seemed as if a sinister yet intangible ghostly figure hovered before him.
The patient's family also sensed that there was something invisible in the room besides themselves and the patient. An atmosphere of unease filled the space, akin to an impending apocalypse, leaving them inexplicably anxious.
Then an even more terrifying scene unfolded: various medical devices attached to the patient began to detach themselves with a clattering sound. It felt as if invisible ghostly claws were manipulating everything. The family members were horrified and rushed to press the call button but were violently pushed out of the room by an unseen force, crashing against the wall of the corridor opposite and losing consciousness.
The nurse on rounds heard the commotion and saw the unconscious family member on the floor, also frightened, and quickly called for help.
The door to the patient's room wouldn't budge; there was glass in the upper half of it, allowing them to see inside. The patient was suspended in mid-air, struggling violently while emitting unimaginable sounds from his throat.
Some nurses were so scared they cried.
Others ran to fetch doctors while several nurses together forcefully slammed against the door. Finally, it burst open, and the patient fell back onto the bed covered in blood.
"What is happening with the patient now?"
"He underwent emergency treatment all night and is currently in intensive care."
"Alright! I'll go check on someone else and then meet up with you." I still had Monkey Spirit on my mind. Even though what Qin Jian described was more bizarre and sinister than anything else I had dealt with, I couldn't stop thinking about how to save Monkey Spirit.
After all, I was familiar with Monkey Spirit's current situation.
Qin Jian didn't say much more, just nodded and headed off to the intensive care unit while I made my way straight to the Neurology Inpatient Building where Monkey Spirit was located.
To my surprise, when I went to find Monkey Spirit, the nurse informed me that they had been transferred to the intensive care unit.
What a coincidence! It seemed too coincidental to be true.
I was puzzled; the person Qin Jian mentioned was also in the intensive care unit, and the Monkey Spirit I was looking for was there as well. Could it be that the person I needed to find was actually Monkey Spirit, the very subject of Qin Jian's story?
A sense of foreboding washed over me as I rushed toward the intensive care unit. I was running so fast that I nearly collided with someone coming around the corner. When I focused, I realized it was her. Before I could say anything, Chi Xinrong exclaimed in surprise, "Hey, Ma Qi, are you looking for me?"
What a small world! In such a large hospital, what were the odds? I thought to myself, cursing out loud, "You little brat, can you not be so easy to find?"
Chi Xinrong, seemingly oblivious to Qin Jian's presence, stepped closer and casually asked, "What's going on?"
"I'm looking for a dead person. You're not dead, so why would I be looking for you?"
Chi Xinrong clicked her tongue and murmured, "I didn't notice; I won't do it again."
"Are you going to the intensive care unit with me?"
"Oh. Sure!" Chi Xinrong followed closely behind as we headed straight for the intensive care unit.
Outside the intensive care unit, sure enough, I spotted Qin Jian. He saw me too; our eyes met. He glanced at Chi Xinrong before quickly turning back to ask, "Did you find them?"
I pointed towards the intensive care unit. "Our common goal."
"Is it him?"
"Yeah."
Qin Jian seemed to have something on his mind, but with Chi Xinrong beside him, he merely moved his lips without voicing his thoughts, politely nodding at her as a greeting.
This time, Chi Xinrong didn't lose her temper. Her clear, bright eyes held a hint of a smile as she nodded gracefully at the other person, standing quietly to the side without saying a word.
I wondered about Chi Xinrong's behavior; it was quite rare. I couldn't tell if she felt that her earlier actions were a bit excessive or if she thought it necessary to maintain a rational demeanor in front of the two men to gain their favor. However, I found her demeanor somewhat awkward; if it were Mi, it would have felt completely natural.
