Chapter 088: Supernatural Growth (Fourteen)
Peng Yan squeezed out a few words that terrified me. I fled deeper into the darkness, yet for some reason, I could never escape this black world. Just when I was at my most desperate, a flicker of light danced before my eyes.
I reached out my hand, and the light resembled a star slowly descending. Then, an extraordinary scene unfolded before me; the light was not a star but a fox—an exquisitely crafted creature that looked like a decorative charm from a keychain, yet it was undeniably alive, complete with a nose and eyes.
With its pointed nose and delicate mouth, the fox had large eyes filled with Spirit Energy and perked ears. It blinked at me and gently nudged my finger with its cool nose, trembling as it stood in the palm of my hand.
"Am I dreaming? If this is a dream, then it is the most beautiful one." The fox was so close that I could reach out and lightly scratch its nose. It blinked its big eyes again and nudged my finger once more.
"Do you want me to leave here?"
The fox nodded. I particularly adored its large eyes filled with Spirit Energy and couldn't help but want to kiss them. Surprisingly, the fox did not shy away; instead, it allowed me to kiss it while gently licking my face with its warm tongue, making me realize this was not a dream.
With this fox by my side, my Mindset became remarkably tranquil, and my emotions gradually stabilized. I no longer felt as fearful in the face of the black world.
"Fox, do you have a name?"
"Zhi..." The fox couldn't speak but expressed itself through actions, shaking its head at me.
"Then how about I call you Mi Li?" Upon mentioning Mi Li, my heart stirred slightly as thoughts of Han Mi crossed my mind. How was she doing now? As I pondered Han Mi, a glistening tear suddenly rolled from the fox's large eyes.
The tear fell into my palm and mysteriously merged into my fingerprints. After the fox's tear blended into my skin, I felt the surrounding darkness begin to fade away, revealing scenery around me. This moment felt like something surreal yet profoundly real; I looked around and saw a door appear before me.
The edges of the door glowed with white light.
I walked towards the door with the fox by my side. It opened automatically, revealing a vast expanse of white beyond it. Hesitating whether to step through or not, the fox nudged my thumb for the third time.
"Are you telling me to go in?"
The fox nodded.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. If the fox could enter, then I would try too; no matter what lay beyond the door, I had to move forward courageously.
As I stepped through the glowing white door, my body lost balance for a moment before jolting awake. It felt like waking from a nightmare after having been startled in a dream. When I opened my eyes, I saw a person—a man with white hair and beard—who appeared slightly older than the Old Monk from Ten-Mile Temple or perhaps even much older.
He smiled warmly at me with a kind gaze.
The first thing I did upon opening my eyes was to look at my palms.
Slowly, I began to relax my hands, and a white light gradually rose. An elderly man by the bed smiled as he reached out to catch the fox that flew out from my palm like a spirit. He said to me, "Thank you for bringing her back, child. She will be your Guardian Spirit from now on."
"I don't want a Guardian Spirit. Excuse me, sir, have you seen a girl? She was with me. Where is she?"
Seeing my anxiety, the old man smiled gently. "Young man, you need to rest. She is fine and will be brought to you shortly."
I felt relieved that Mi was okay. I wanted to ask the old man if there had been a recent funeral at his house because Mi and I had both heard Funeral Music last night and had run away in panic. Thinking of this made me nervously check myself.
I was clean and spotless, with no sticky white membrane on me. What was going on? I was fine! This was wonderful!
The old man nodded repeatedly with a smile. "It's good that you're well."
I was overjoyed and eager to see Mi as soon as possible. I tried to sit up several times but found myself too weak.
"Young man, being restless won't do you any good. Take your time to rest; it will take about an hour and a half for you to recover fully. Here is a Cultivating Body and Mind Pill; would you like one?"
What the heck! Was this old man trying to harm me? I wasn't paranoid or anything, but it seemed like everyone was suspicious of each other's intentions.
The old man looked ethereal, with kind eyes and long nails that were neatly trimmed. He held out a shiny black pill that emitted a pleasant aroma, maintaining his unchanged warm smile as he urged me to swallow it.
It wasn't paranoia; everyone has their guard up around strangers! So I hesitated but eventually accepted it, thinking that as long as I didn't swallow it, I'd be fine. However, when I placed it in my mouth, the pill melted instantly upon contact with my saliva before I even had the chance to chew it.
I stared in shock, not understanding what the old man had said. I just watched him rise gracefully and leave with steady steps before hurriedly reaching into my mouth.
What the hell! I dug around until I finally spat out some saliva, staring blankly at my fingers, unable to comprehend how that pill had vanished so quickly.
Who was that old man? Who was the Guardian Spirit he mentioned? Where was this place? I truly knew nothing. But somehow, I felt that the old man wasn't a bad person. After he left for quite some time, I didn't see anyone else or hear any Funeral Music. Was this the Forest Guardian's dwelling?
I looked up and walked over to the window. Not only was the roof supported by wooden beams inside the house, but even the buildings in the courtyard outside were also made of wood with faint carvings. The entire architectural structure, though lacking intricate designs or flying eaves, resembled the ancient elegance of the Ten-Mile Temple.
This was definitely not an ordinary shelter for guarding the mountains and forests.
I slowly stepped out of the room, and the scenery before me was breathtakingly beautiful. A paradise on earth? Or had I really died and arrived in the Western Paradise? Wasn't that absurd? The Western Paradise is just a myth created to satisfy people's psychological emptiness; besides, I'm from the East—there's no connection between us and their Western Paradise.
If this isn't the Western Paradise, then what place could it possibly be?
As I stepped out of the room, filled with confusion, I noticed a few people hurrying by, their expressions anxious as they whispered among themselves. "Originally, it was a Long Worm we captured, but after a stone turned it into such a terrifying monster, the master is at a loss!"
Long Worm, stone, master! Why couldn't I understand what they were saying?
I felt like a transparent glass; they ignored my presence completely, yet their words drifted into my ears without missing a beat. "The mistress's funeral has just passed, and now the Long Worm is attacking. In my opinion, the master might as well throw that human to the Long Worm."
Now it seemed clearer to me. The human they were discussing must be me. The next question was: if they referred to me as human, then were they not human themselves?
At that moment, I saw the old man from earlier walking in from another room. Upon seeing him, I quickly ducked back into the room and jumped onto the bed, pretending to be fast asleep.
Outside, I heard his scolding voice, and the whispers abruptly ceased. Those who had been discussing things now addressed him respectfully as "master," and soon the outside fell silent. I could hear soft footsteps approaching my direction.
Then the door opened. I was extremely nervous and had no idea who was coming in; all I could do was hold my breath and keep my eyes shut tight.
