Chapter 087: Supernatural Growth (Part Thirteen)
The night was not particularly clear, but with the help of the dim light, I could still make out the outlines of the surroundings.
Having just escaped the fright of the giant python, I now heard Funeral Music echoing through the desolate mountains. There were no houses around, so where could a funeral be? Yet, the music persisted and grew clearer as we descended the mountain.
I oriented myself and led Mi toward the source of the sound, pointing in that direction as I walked. "It's over there." In truth, I regretted not seeking someone out after the incident.
That person was Qin Ye.
Qin Ye was a master. While I questioned his identity, I was thoroughly impressed by his abilities.
I ran through the night with Mi, puzzled that my Five Thunder Spell had failed to have any effect on the giant python.
Suddenly, a cry startled me. It was Mi who was in distress. Her face was as pale as paper, and she stumbled as if she might fall at any moment. "Brother Qi, I feel terrible."
I quickly supported her and asked with concern, "What’s wrong?"
"I..." Mi slowly raised her hand, her face contorted in pain.
Looking at her fingers, I was taken aback. A layer of membrane had inexplicably formed on her fingertips, resembling the webbing of amphibians. Or perhaps it wasn’t webbing at all; it was a thin layer of membrane that seemed to be wrapping around her in a sinister manner.
This membrane appeared on her face and body as well.
I pulled at it desperately, wanting to alleviate her suffering, but to my horror, tearing it caused her to bleed beneath it. She cried out in agony.
Seeing Mi in such pain felt like a knife twisting in my heart. I knelt on the ground with a thud and bowed my head repeatedly, tears streaming down my face as I pleaded, "If you must punish someone, then punish me! Please don’t let her suffer like this anymore. I beg you."
Mi trembled as she helped me up, extending her fingers covered by a layer of white film to gently touch my face, her voice shaking. "Brother Qi, Brother Qi, you... you also have..."
Me? Seeing the terror in Mi's eyes, I hurriedly reached out, not to raise my hand to look.
Wasn't it? On my fingers, a new layer appeared, identical to the one on Mi's body. This was the result of the curse! But while this film appeared on me, the one on her did not diminish; instead, it thickened and increased. The sight was horrifying and truly shocking.
This terrifying supernatural growth was like a cocoon that threatened to envelop both Mi and me layer by layer, as if we were being turned into pupae.
No, I could die without concern; I couldn't drag Mi down with me. I had to find a way out, a means of liberation. My mind was solely focused on Mi as I gripped her hand tightly. The film was creeping over my fingers, but despite the pain, I refused to give in and clung to her with all my might.
The intermittent sounds of sorrowful music grew closer. Supporting and half-carrying Mi, I could only rely on my hearing to discern our direction as we moved step by step toward the source of the sound. Our vision was fading; the surroundings became increasingly blurry, and we could only see objects and paths nearby.
The path was difficult to traverse, possibly overgrown with thorns. I ignored the sharp pain from my feet and the encroaching film that threatened to envelop my body. "Mi, hold on." I shook her vigorously; she weakly responded with a sound before falling unconscious again.
I called out to her countless times to wake up from her slumber while feeling drowsy myself. The film continued to grow thicker; our bodies gradually shrank and weakened as we struggled forward in vain.
"Mi... Mi." This time I couldn't wake her. A thought crossed my mind: Mi fell into the waterhole, and I went to save her. Since we both found ourselves in this situation simultaneously, it could only mean one thing—the water in the pond was problematic.
The reason that giant python hadn't harmed us was that it felt we could never escape its control.
I fell but clung desperately to Mi as I struggled to rise. The film that sprouted from my legs felt like glue, firmly binding me so that moving even a step required immense effort.
Funeral music seemed to echo right before us. I stretched out my arm, trying to grasp this thread of sound emerging from the darkness—my only hope. Rustling sounds approached; a colorful giant python slithered toward us, not far away.
Indeed, the giant python had followed us.
It was certain that we would meet such an end, forever entangled in its sinister embrace. Perhaps in the next moment, both Han Mi and I would become a feast to fill its belly.
I gazed in despair at the approaching giant python, and at that moment, Funeral Music vanished into thin air.
Perhaps there was never any Funeral Music, or maybe it was specifically composed for Han Mi and me. Otherwise, how could there be Funeral Music in this desolate wilderness?
The giant python rolled closer to us, and I could even sense its murderous aura, along with the coldness of its body and the stench that accompanied each breath it took.
I closed my eyes in pain, deliberately rolling in front of Han Mi to block the python's path. This way, I could enter its belly before she did. Done. After that, I remained still, thinking; rather than watching it swallow us bit by bit, it would be better to play dead, as if being drawn into a Smart Sleeping Bag.
As the vibrant scales of the giant python became clearly visible, a loud shout rang out from above: "Beast! Dare to disturb your Grandfather Taisui and seek death!" With a sharp crack followed by a horrific wail, I lost all consciousness.
At that moment, a membrane successfully enveloped my entire body. Han Mi and I were like cocoons wrapped in silk, losing awareness and completely oblivious to what was happening around us.
When I found myself in an incredibly dark space—an endless kind of black—I thought I was dead.
In the black space, I shouted loudly into a horn: "Mi! Mi!"
The blackness was all-consuming—empty and silent—there was no Mi. No Fatty, no Ma Wu Funeral Home, and none of that annoying girl Chi Xinrong.
Right, Han Mi had told me earlier that a woman was looking for me.
The woman looking for me couldn't be Chi Xinrong; so who could it be?
"It’s me." A cold voice echoed from the depths of the darkness, startling me into a brief pause as I hurriedly looked around.
A mass darker than black emerged from the shadows, moving closer. As I approached to see more clearly, I realized it was the shape of a person.
Tall and slender, with black hair covering her entire face, followed by her body and limbs. At a glance, she appeared to be a complete human, and I let out a sigh of relief. Her voice sounded familiar, and a figure jumped into my mind; she really resembled someone I knew.
"Ma Qi, I knew you would forget me for someone new."
"You are Peng Yan?" I thought carefully, but that couldn't be right. Peng Yan had no connection to me; how could there be any talk of forgetting someone?
"Hahaha, guess who I am." She stepped closer, exuding a chilling aura. Her disheveled hair concealed her entire face, and I truly couldn't see her features clearly.
Just when I was uncertain about who this person was, she suddenly swept aside her hair, gritting her teeth as she spoke each word deliberately: "To death unyielding, I will follow you for life."
What the hell!
