Chapter 084: Supernatural Growth (Part Ten)
"Mi, why must you?" I didn't turn around; I couldn't bear to frighten her. My body was normal, my features intact, but the peeling skin made me look terrifying.
Han Mi clung to me, her face pressed against my back, the dampness indicating she was crying.
"Brother Qi, don't abandon me. I want to be with you for life."
I pried her fingers off one by one, still not looking at her. My tone was filled with helplessness as I said, "Mi, if I remain like this from now on, you'll be scared. Plus, your parents won't agree to us being together."
What I said was true. Previously, Han Mi wanted to be with me.
"No! I will stay with you no matter what you become. I want to be with you for life, for eternity."
Han Mi's determination moved me deeply. An accidental promise had led to our current bond. How similar it was to a cliché from a movie! I turned around, and our eyes met; her tear-filled gaze broke my heart.
Clearly, Han Mi hadn't expected me to look this way. When I turned, she momentarily froze in shock. Then she tightened her grip on me even more until the door swung open.
To my surprise, the person who pushed the door open wasn't the fat guy.
Instead, it was a crowd of familiar and unfamiliar faces—men and women alike. Among them were a few from Han Family Village. They roughly tore Han Mi away from me, their eyes wide with fear and hatred as they shouted "monster." Encouraged by some in the crowd, they began to shove me out of the Funeral Home. It was nearly dark outside; they complained about the lack of light and even lit torches, surrounding me as if for some ritual.
"Let go of me! I want to be with Brother Qi!"
"He’s not Brother Qi! He’s possessed by an evil spirit and will soon devour people." The fat guy finally stepped forward, a smug expression on his face as he pointed at me and addressed the crowd.
"That’s impossible! You're lying!" Han Mi shouted as she struggled desperately. When she couldn't break free, she resorted to biting the person holding her until he had no choice but to release her.
Seeing this, the fat guy hurriedly tried to intervene.
Han Mi spat at him fiercely and cursed, "May you die a terrible death."
Fat reached out to block Han Mi's path. "Mi, don't go. Look at him, he's terrifying. He might swallow you whole next."
"I'm not afraid. If he swallows me, then we can be together forever," Han Mi's words were shocking, leaving everyone stunned. Some murmured that the child had lost her mind, still following Ma Qi despite his transformation.
At this point, my presence was unnecessary, especially since I couldn't even speak. Additionally, a sharp pain radiated from somewhere in my body; my exposed skin on my arms and ankles truly frightened many.
I could feel my body changing as well—alternating between cold and hot, my tongue felt heavy and unresponsive. Mi stepped back to protect me, but Fat suddenly jumped in again. "Do you know the truth about what happened in Han Family Village? It's him..." He pointed at me and continued, "He stalked Yin Yin from Han Family Village multiple times before attacking her, which allowed that guy Zhu Gang to succeed and ultimately led to poor Yin Yin's death."
Someone took a photo with their phone. I raised my hand to cover my face, revealing the peeling skin on my arm. A few people screamed in horror, while others cursed angrily.
"Get him out of here or burn him alive!" someone shouted.
"He's so wicked."
"He seemed fine normally; he even helped our family," another voiced doubt.
"Knowing someone’s face doesn’t mean you know their heart; who knew he could be so dark?" The crowd was incensed; I had finally become the target of their wrath. Fat Yi wore a sinister smile, becoming the hero of the exorcism. Under his instigation, people were furious and eager to tear me apart.
As darkness fell completely, more and more people gathered under the streetlights. Someone called the police. Some were running away while others grabbed sticks and knives from their homes, escalating the situation. I had no choice but to make a hasty retreat. Han Mi firmly grasped my arm and insisted, "Brother Qi, we need to go."
We stumbled through the chaos of shouts and curses as we hurried toward a secluded area. Suddenly, a chaotic burst of flames gathered and then dispersed; soon after, we heard police sirens blaring as people scattered in all directions. Some were gesturing wildly while others pointed toward where we had run; some were chasing after us.
Han Mi and I ran blindly, choosing paths that were deserted or where there was no path at all.
We were like dogs fleeing a funeral, darting across roads under the wheels of cars, leaping over drainage channels, climbing over walls, and weaving around buildings.
When we were exhausted and could barely move, we realized we had strayed far from the crowd and found ourselves in a desolate wilderness.
"Brother Qi, does it hurt?" Han Mi asked, her voice trembling with tears. The dim light from her phone illuminated the area where the skin had separated from the flesh, blood seeping out due to the friction caused by running while sweating.
It wasn't true that it didn't hurt, but I couldn't let her worry. I shakily reached out to tuck a strand of hair that had fallen on her forehead behind her ear, forcing a smile despite her dirty face that couldn't hide her delicate features. "It doesn't hurt."
"Are you thirsty?"
I wrapped my arms around her soft, sweat-soaked body and kissed the top of her head. "Sweetheart, I'm not thirsty. Don't worry about me; I should be taking care of you. Let Brother Qi see what this place is like." I stood up unsteadily, pain shooting through my feet, and couldn't help but grimace as I looked around.
The environment was unfamiliar yet serene, with an inexplicable eerie atmosphere lingering in the air. A chill crept over me, and I rubbed my arms. Ouch! That hurt. Shaking my phone to get a better view of the distance, I noticed what seemed to be a cave nearby—dark and indistinct. This place couldn't possibly be the Strange Mountain from A City!
Strange Mountain was a place filled with mysterious legends.
It was said that Strange Mountain housed a sinister cave where a giant python had gained intelligence, capable of swallowing a water buffalo whole and transforming into a beautiful woman to seduce unsuspecting young men before draining their essence and devouring them.
Thinking about this legend made me chuckle bitterly.
After all, legends are just legends. Even if we had inadvertently come to Strange Mountain, nothing as terrifying as those tales would happen. I walked over to check on Mi; she wore a pained expression as she sat there, sweat beads dried by the wind leaving faint traces on her fair skin, making her look quite comical.
"Come on, let's go take a look over there."
"Brother Qi, I twisted my ankle; it hurts to move."
"Let me see."
Han Mi was wearing wedge sneakers. After running around aimlessly earlier, blisters had formed on my feet; being a girl, she was bound to twist her ankle in such shoes. My heart ached for her as I knelt down, handed her my phone, and took off her shoes. Before me were delicate feet that were pale as jade and particularly graceful.
I grasped the swollen area around her ankle and kneaded it a few times, keeping my eyes fixed on her. She furrowed her brow slightly, her long eyelashes trembling.
"Does it hurt?"
"Yeah." When she looked at me again, tears were welling in her eyes, her nose slightly red, and the way she pressed her lips together to hold back her cries made me feel even worse.
"There's no one here; if you want to cry, just let it out."
"It's fine, Brother Qi. I can endure it."
I couldn't bear to look at her anymore, afraid that if I did, I wouldn't be able to go through with it. The last move would hurt a lot. Gradually, I applied more pressure as I continued to knead the area. With a sharp crack, she covered her mouth, allowing tears to flow freely down her face without making a sound.
"All done." She nodded and tentatively tried to move, and indeed it didn't hurt anymore. She looked particularly happy, almost ready to break into a smile. When she smiled, she looked truly beautiful. Seeing that she was about to get up, I quickly squatted down. "Even if it feels better, you can't walk right away. I'll carry you."
