Chapter 048: Where Does the Heart Belong
Han Mi refused to return to her soul, and was more than willing to stay with me. However, this was far too unrealistic. I had lost my soul in a state of despair, while she had merely misplaced hers. After so much effort to find it, now she was refusing to go back. This was no joke; her stubbornness could not be ignored.
The eyes of the Han Clan were fixed on me. If Han Mi did not wake up soon, both Fat Yi and I might end up being dismantled to feed the dogs.
After some contemplation, I took out a talisman and said to Han Mi, "If I call your name, you must respond three times, and then we can be together."
Han Mi's face lit up with joy as she smiled sweetly and nodded in agreement.
I felt a pang of guilt; Han Mi, I'm sorry for this. It’s a kind-hearted lie, but I hope that when you wake up, you remember nothing at all. Then I solemnly called out to her, "Han Mi~ Han Mi~ Han Mi."
"Mm~ Mm~ Mm."
With a whoosh, Han Mi's soul was firmly captured by the Soul Absorbing Talisman.
I decisively folded the Soul Absorbing Talisman.
As I struggled awake, my fingers still clutched the folded talisman.
The room was filled with people.
Upon seeing me awake, the whispers and murmurs abruptly ceased.
Fat Yi was sweating profusely, his shirt soaked as he wiped his forehead with his fist. When he saw me open my eyes, he looked overjoyed, almost on the verge of tears. "Brother Qi, you scared me to death! I thought you were—" His words trailed off, but his expression clearly showed that he genuinely wished for my recovery.
This guy still had some conscience left after all.
"Help me sit up," I exhaled deeply. With Fat Yi's assistance, I managed to rise. I had to admit that I was still too inexperienced; my cultivation was less than a third of my grandfather's. I couldn't withstand such trials or tribulations.
Fat Yi helped me to Han Mi's bedside.
Han Mi lay there, her complexion becoming translucent as if she could melt away at any moment, making one’s heart ache at the sight.
I took out the Soul Absorbing Talisman, murmuring incantations as I performed the Soul Sending Technique: "Return to your place, today, dream soul, with no end, return to your position, dear in sight~ settle, separate, dry, return to your position~"
With a breath, the soul returned to its place.
I sighed in relief, feeling as weak as if I were standing on cotton.
If it weren't for Fat Yi supporting me, I would have collapsed again.
I sensed an inexplicable pull, drawing away my original energy. If I exerted myself even slightly more, I felt like I would faint.
How could I be so cowardly and weak?
I asked myself as I looked at Han Mi, who was slowly opening her eyes, revealing a bittersweet smile.
"Good... you're awake... good girl, we won't force you to marry or go on blind dates anymore." Hearing Han Mi's mother embrace her and lament, I suddenly understood why Han Mi was reluctant to wake up.
She was resisting marriage.
The first thing Han Mi did upon waking was to complain about being hungry.
Fat Yi and I became superfluous.
No one cared about us; they surrounded Han Mi, asking her all sorts of questions and offering various greetings.
I felt that Han Mi still remembered me.
She would come looking for me.
I could still sense her gaze piercing through the crowd, searching for my whereabouts.
Fat Yi walked out with an envious expression, sighing heavily.
The entire Han Clan had gathered except for those keeping vigil at Han Yin Ling Tang.
Han Mi's Father is the village chief of Han Family Village.
It’s easy to imagine who they would curry favor with if not him.
This is for the best.
During the soul summoning, if it weren't for so many people, Han Mi's spirit might not have returned.
“Master Ma,” someone called out, and I turned back with Pang Qi.
It was Han Mi's Father.
With his daughter awake, his face was filled with smiles hidden in the wrinkles. He strode over to me, apologizing, “Master Ma, my daughter just woke up, and I didn’t greet you right away. Please forgive my negligence.”
I forced a smile, “It’s nothing. If she wants to eat something, let her have it, but don’t let her eat too much, especially at night.”
“She wants to see you; she has something to say.”
“Alright.”
Han Mi losing her soul was truly my fault.
If it weren’t for—
It’s complicated to explain.
After waking up, Han Mi took a sip of rice porridge and suddenly called out Ma Qi’s name. It startled everyone because they thought that the newly awakened Han Mi wouldn’t know of my existence or remember who I was.
They didn’t realize that Han Mi and I had been friends for a long time, or rather, secret lovers.
I liked her, and she actually had feelings for me too.
I could see the melancholy in her eyes up close and couldn’t care less about what others thought as I gently took her hand.
Her hand was cool, delicate enough that I couldn't bear to grip it tightly, fearing it might shatter at any moment.
"Brother Qi, I want to tell you what happened."
"Is that okay?" I worried about her health; after all, she had been unconscious for an entire night. Her father had sent her to the hospital after he fell into a coma, and various machines had checked her—there was no heartbeat and no issues. The IV line barely flowed, meaning the fluids couldn't be administered.
The hospital was at a loss and issued a critical condition notice, advising the family to take her home.
Then, they sought out Fat from Ma Wu Funeral Home.
Fat wanted to separate from me and monopolize Ma Wu Funeral Home, so he kept all of this from me and acted on his own. The outcome was not ideal; when he lost the money he had acquired, people came knocking on his door.
No more nonsense.
I held Han Mi's hand. To those with a narrow view, it might seem like I was taking advantage of my identity as a Mortician, but to those with clear eyes, it was evident that I had a connection with Han Mi.
Han Mi only had eyes for me.
I only had eyes for Han Mi.
It was that simple.
Later, Han Mi told me that because her father was the village chief, many people sought to curry favor with her family, resulting in numerous marriage proposals.
Each one more impressive than the last.
She didn't want any of them, so she arranged to meet me at Xie Ming Manor.
She arrived early at Xie Ming Manor. On the way there, she came up with an idea.
That idea was to play a prank and scare me a little.
She didn't quite believe in this so-called Mortician online, who supposedly knew everything about Exorcism and could catch ghosts, especially at such a young age.
Although she still didn't know that this Brother Qi was actually Ma Qi from Ma Wu Funeral Home.
Yet, she really wanted to verify his abilities, to see if he could see through her act of pretending to be dead.
Han Mi had transformed the inner hall of Xie Ming Manor into a funeral parlor.
The Black Veil Portrait, Baymax flowers, and everything else were ready. Then, she calmly lay in the stone coffin, quietly waiting for my arrival.
However, at that time, I had not yet awakened in the coffin at Ma Wu Funeral Home.
What Han Mi encountered was a nightmare.
The wandering souls needed fresh hosts, and Xie Ming Manor was her territory.
Han Mi was walking right into the tiger's den.
A solitary ghost effortlessly invaded Han Mi's body, driving away her own soul.
It was then that I saw her sitting in the bridal sedan chair with nowhere to go.
Speaking of the bridal sedan chair, there was an unexpected twist.
Han Mi was ultimately driven away by Yinling, becoming a wandering soul with no place to belong.
In a daze, she finally found a spot to sit down but couldn't steady herself before a bloody ghostly face appeared—eyes like Dead Fish—scaring her into a scream as she fled in terror.
She ran and ran.
All she saw were figures covered in blood, sorrowful and tragic, approaching her.
Han Mi was terrified, cold sweat pouring down her back.
Finding the way home, she finally saw herself.
But she was driven away by a wandering spirit that seemed to have drifted in from nowhere.
Afterward, someone arrived and busied themselves for a while.
It seemed that the wandering spirit had been chased away.
Han Mi wanted to return to her body, but inexplicably, she was ejected instead.
Then, the spirit that had been driven away grabbed her: "Hehe, we make a perfect pair."
