Chapter 16: Ghost Fight
At first glance, the sight of the fat man's back startled me.
He loved to eat fatty meat, and it showed. Among the white rolls of flesh on his back, a huge boil was protruding. To be more precise, another boil had just emerged on top of the first one. I squinted my eyes as the fat man groaned in pain, his cries gradually fading away. The noise from the street receded like a tide, and the whole world fell silent. I opened my eyes—
"Ji Xiaoying, you vixen! I want you to suffer for eternity, to be unable to live a proper life in your next incarnation, to become a worthless chicken that no one wants."
"Let go of me! I saw him first; he is mine..."
Strange sounds came from within that boil. Two female ghosts were fighting over the fat man as their host. I thought that if I let them continue tormenting him like this, it would be the fat man who would suffer.
Just like Grandpa said, the fat man attracted negative energy; whenever there was even a slight opportunity, evil entities would try to attach themselves to him and cause trouble.
I sneered and pulled out a talisman. With my vermilion brush in hand, I pressed the talisman against the boil on his back and quickly drew a few strokes before yanking it off with force—
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm not bragging.
This was no ordinary talisman; it was a Soul Absorbing Talisman.
Specifically designed to absorb evil souls, this seemingly weightless piece of paper stuck to the fat man's body. Pulling it back was not an easy task; the evil soul clung to him like a parasite, perfectly comfortable in its ideal host and unwilling to come out even if it meant death.
As I attempted to retract the Soul Absorbing Talisman with enough force, a mass resembling a human face was torn out. Its shrill cries pierced through the air, and success in absorbing the soul was just moments away.
Little did I know, the fat man suddenly exploded in rage and swung his fist at my face. Damn! He had been bewitched by the evil soul. I suppressed the intense pain and cursed, "Damn you! I'm trying to help you, you..."
"Helping me? You beast! I see you're up to no good!"
The ghostly face that had been half-drawn back into the Boil was now a complete failure, all thanks to Fatty's punch.
I was furious!
Reciting the incantation again, I grasped the Soul Absorbing Talisman and attempted to retract it—
The Evil Soul was relentless, urging Fatty to punch and kick me, and we were embroiled in a chaotic struggle in the room. The Evil Soul in the Boil let out a piercing, eerie laugh.
I was exasperated and shouted at Fatty's back, "Ji Xiaoying, what are you doing here making a fuss?"
Indeed, another spirit in the Boil was Ji Xiaoying.
Upon hearing my shout, she became entangled with an unknown Evil Soul, causing Fatty to emit sounds akin to a pig being slaughtered.
"It hurts... ah... it hurts..."
"Can you handle this?"
Grandpa appeared at the door, his expression not looking too good. However, he walked steadily inside and placed a talisman on Fatty. "This is the Purification Talisman; you need to act quickly."
As he spoke, Grandpa added, "Today is Ji Xiaoying's soul-retrieval night. The Evil Soul is her best friend; their emotional entanglement has lasted for many years. Her friend committed suicide and turned into a ghost to bring misfortune to Ji Xiaoying."
"Did you just perform Mediumship, Grandpa?"
At his age, it wasn't advisable for him to engage in Mediumship.
A Medium could be invaded by Yin Qi, leading to physical weakness and low resistance, making them susceptible to possession by Yin Spirits. Seeing Grandpa's poor complexion made me anxious; I couldn't spare my hands to help him, and a sense of worry lingered in my heart.
Grandpa not only placed the Purification Talisman but also recited the Calmness Protection Spell, preventing the Evil Soul from controlling Fat.
This allowed me to focus entirely on dealing with the Evil Soul.
The Soul Absorbing Talisman reached its maximum energy, and combined with my external force, a sharp ghostly wail echoed as the Soul Absorbing Talisman drew away a wisp of soul.
I initially thought I had absorbed the Evil Soul, but unexpectedly, as Grandpa leaned weakly against the chair, Fat suddenly erupted into laughter: "Hahaha, old man, you think getting rid of me is that easy? Take this punch..."
Damn.
As I was folding the Soul Binding Talisman, Grandpa, in his weakened state, suffered a fatal blow from Fat.
Pfft—
Grandpa spat out blood, his face pale as paper.
I was furious. I stuffed the Soul Absorbing Talisman into Grandpa's Treasure Bottle used for containing Evil Spirits, rolled up my sleeves, and charged at Fat.
In school, I may not have had many skills, but fighting was my strong suit.
"Don't! He's Fat..." At this point, Grandpa was still trying to protect Fat. Under the influence of the Evil Soul, Fat had completely transformed. After hitting Grandpa, he grabbed a shovel and swung it at me with deadly intent.
Fat had bullied me since we were kids. Grandpa was two years older than me and always let him have his way. That was out of respect for Grandpa, but now that I realized I wasn't actually Grandpa's biological grandson and had no real connection to Fat, it didn't matter anymore.
The resentment buried deep within me erupted at that moment.
I felt no mercy for him; when it was time to strike, I struck. I attacked—forcing him down—flipping over and slapping a Soul-Restraining Talisman onto Fat's forehead. He froze in place. I struck again, forming hand seals for Earth Spirit Finger, swiftly transforming into Bagua Seal and Three Pure Fingers to suppress Boil. I pulled back and pressed the talisman down again—
"Ah..." A ghostly wail echoed as the rebellious Evil Soul was successfully drawn into the Soul-Restraining Talisman.
With a few swift motions, the Bagua Seal folded, and the talisman was neatly tucked into the Ghost-Subduing Bottle.
Hush—
I exhaled deeply, glancing at Pang, who had collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
I was worried about Grandpa.
Grandpa looked pale, his complexion darkened, and his eyes were vacant.
"Grandpa..."
"Pang. Is he alright?"
At that moment, I truly felt displeased with Grandpa. He only cared about Pang, ignoring my presence entirely, as he always did.
"He'll be fine; he's not dead." My words were laced with irritation as I helped Grandpa up. "You should rest a bit. Do you want to go to the hospital..."
"Hey, are you out of your mind? If we could go to the hospital, what do we need you for? Besides, how would we explain this kind of thing at a hospital?" Grandpa struggled to speak, his lips trembling and words slurred.
"Grandpa, please. I'll take good care of Pang." I reassured him, helping him back inside before turning to check on Pang.
Pang didn't seem to have any serious issues; he was just weakened from being possessed by two souls. After swallowing a specially made pill, he would soon fall into a deep sleep and naturally regain his strength.
Honestly, my main concern was still Grandpa. If it weren't for his help with the Mediumship and Exorcism incantations, I wouldn't have been sure I could handle those two troublesome female ghosts on my own.
I settled the fat one and ran over to Grandpa's house.
As soon as I entered, I was taken aback. The Grandpa who had looked ashen and lifeless before now had a rosy complexion, appearing vibrant and healthy.
"Qi, I have something to tell you," he said.
Not only that, but his words were clear, unlike someone who was on the verge of death.
Grandpa was a practitioner; he had the ability to restore his damaged body. I had known this for a long time, but his current condition was too unusual; it didn't seem like a recovery achieved through his own abilities.
I cautiously approached and asked, "Grandpa, if there's anything you need, just let me know. I'll do my best to help you."
"You little rascal, do you think I'm about to die? Suddenly you're so considerate of me."
