The autumn air grew thicker, and the streetlights in the upscale residential area flickered to life. Li Xue walked through the landscaped area beneath her building, the sound of her high heels echoing on the pavement.
Dressed in a professional suit, she stood tall with an alluring figure. Her long, dark hair was neatly tied up, and a standard smile graced her delicate, clean face.
When she finally reached her front door and opened it, just as she set down her briefcase, the door was suddenly flung open with a bang.
Chen Li burst in energetically. Today, she wore makeup, her curly hair cascading over her chest, and looked stunning in a red dress that accentuated her graceful figure.
"Why did you work so late today?" she asked with a frown, her tone slightly accusatory. "Where's Liu Wen? Why isn't he here with you?"
"Work was busy," Li Xue replied calmly and gently. "He has been swamped with company matters lately and went on his own."
Chen Li and Liu Wen were a perfect couple, always the center of attention wherever they went. The original Li Xue and Liu Wen were in a relationship, while Chen Li was Li Xue's cousin—an energetic freelancer with a quick mind, serving as the story's heroine.
Liu Wen and Chen Li often clashed and didn't see eye to eye, frequently exchanging barbs. Meanwhile, the original Li Xue found herself caught in the middle, struggling to navigate between them.
After hearing the explanation, Chen Li's expression softened considerably but she still felt indignant on Li Xue's behalf. "No matter how busy he is, he shouldn't leave you alone like that! I need to drag him out for dinner and have a serious talk with him."
"Sure," Li Xue replied with a smile.
She settled onto the sofa and removed her jacket, revealing a white shirt underneath that hugged her curves perfectly; her slender figure and long legs were striking.
Chen Li had intended to nag a bit more but her gaze fell on Li Xue's new outfit, causing her eyes to light up. "That outfit looks great! Where did you get it?"
Li Xue was an urban white-collar worker while Chen Li was a freelancer who had married well; she came from money—a typical little rich woman.
"It was issued by the company," Li Xue said with a faint smile, though a hint of helplessness flickered in her eyes. "There are plenty more at the office if you want some."
"Really? That’s awesome!" Chen Li exclaimed, her eyes narrowing with delight.
She loved shopping for clothes but unfortunately, Jing Chen was too controlling and hadn’t let her shop for ages; every time she wanted something new, it had to be delivered to her home.
However...
"What made you decide to wear this outfit today?" Chen Li asked curiously as she scrutinized her cousin.
Li Xue rarely wore company-issued clothing; she preferred custom-made outfits that were both comfortable and well-fitted.
"There’s a new project," Li Xue said as she pulled out some documents from her briefcase and handed them to Chen Li.
Chen Li took the documents and glanced at them for a moment before her eyes brightened even more. "Is this the project I wanted to do?"
Li Xue nodded.
Chen Li was overjoyed. "Li Xue, you’re amazing!" This project was something she had always wanted, but Jing Chen thought the risks were too high and had never agreed to it. She never expected that Li Xue would help her secure it.
Excitedly, she rushed over, hugged Li Xue's face, and planted a kiss on her cheek. "Li Xue, I love you!"
"Alright, alright," Li Xue said, pushing her away helplessly. "Now that we have the project, just focus on it and don’t lose money."
"Mm-hmm." Chen Li nodded enthusiastically.
After a moment of thought, she took out a document from her bag and handed it to Li Xue. "This is the project proposal Jing Chen sent me a few days ago. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, so I’m giving it to you."
Li Xue took it and casually placed it on the table. "I won’t share Jing Chen’s intentions."
Chen Li giggled a couple of times and cheerfully walked away with the document.
Li Xue let out a sigh of relief. She wasn’t good at comforting girls, especially someone like Chen Li.
Li Xue was not originally from this world; she had been here for half a year now, having absorbed the original owner's memories and quickly adapted to this identity. The original Li Xue had a childhood friendship with both Chen Li and Liu Wen.
Liu Wen was the original owner’s boyfriend, while Chen Li was married to Jing Chen. Jing Chen was a domineering CEO who loved Chen Li deeply but struggled to express his feelings, often doing things that led to misunderstandings.
Although Chen Li liked Jing Chen, she was sensitive and often felt that he didn’t love her back. This led her to overthink things and grow closer to Li Xue, which created many problems in the relationship between the original Li Xue and Liu Wen.
The original Li Xue died in an accident. At that time, she was with Chen Li and Liu Wen. They had gotten into an argument again, and when the original Li Xue stepped in to mediate, an agitated Chen Li pushed her away. The original Li Xue hit her head on the steps and died on the spot.
That accident resulted in the death of the original Li Xue and brought Li Xue into this world. She accepted the original owner's memories and knew the entire story but had no intention of getting involved in the plot.
Staying away from the main characters was her way of preserving her life—a lesson she had learned over the past six months.
Liu Wen’s relationship with the original Li Xue was not good.
Liu Wen was an entrepreneur, busy with work. Although he had been with Li Xue for a long time, he didn’t truly understand her. Li Xue was introverted and disliked confrontation; she preferred to keep her feelings bottled up. This led Liu Wen to believe that she didn’t love him, and their relationship grew increasingly cold.
Liu Wen found himself attracted to Chen Li, who was lively and cheerful, with a simple mind. Being with her felt comfortable. Chen Li also enjoyed Liu Wen's company; he was humorous and made her happy. However, they both forgot that they each had partners, and their actions were unfair to Li Xue and Jing Chen.
Li Xue felt sad about the closeness between Chen Li and Liu Wen, but since Chen Li was her cousin, she couldn’t voice her feelings and could only sulk in silence. Liu Wen, on the other hand, felt jealous of the bond between Li Xue and Jing Chen. His temper was already poor, and it worsened towards Li Xue.
Li Xue was also struggling at work. Although she was a white-collar worker, her boss was a middle-aged man in his forties with a volatile temper who often lashed out at his subordinates. Despite being diligent, Li Xue’s introverted nature made her boss dissatisfied, leading him to undermine her.
Li Xue felt immense pressure but didn’t dare to tell Liu Wen for fear of worrying him. Yet, because she remained silent, Liu Wen didn’t pay attention; he thought Li Xue was happy with Jing Chen and didn’t consider his own feelings.
Rubbing her temples, Li Xue got up and headed to the bathroom. After finishing her shower, her phone rang. It was a call from Liu Wen.
As she dried her hair absentmindedly, she let the phone ring. After a while, it stopped but soon rang again. With a sigh, she walked over to pick it up and answered.
“Li Xue, are you off work?” Liu Wen’s voice came through the phone.
“Yeah,” Li Xue replied softly.
“I’ll pick you up tonight; let’s have dinner with Chen Li,” Liu Wen said apologetically. “I’ve been so busy with work lately that I’ve neglected you.”
Holding the phone, Li Xue gazed out at the night sky and replied coldly, “No need.”
