“Gangzi, take out the jade pendant,” Grandfather said, glancing at me.
“Now?” I asked, puzzled.
“Yes, take it out,” he nodded.
I pulled out the jade pendant and placed it on the Altar. However, Grandfather made no move; instead, he closed his eyes and began to meditate.
After waiting for several hours, the jade pendant on the Altar suddenly emitted a burst of light. Seeing this, Grandfather bit his finger and let a drop of blood fall onto the pendant. He then took out a piece of black talisman paper and wrapped the pendant inside it. Once the blood was fully absorbed by the pendant and the light gradually faded, Grandfather let out a sigh of relief and sat down heavily on the Altar.
A few hours later, my brother and sister-in-law returned. Their figures appeared ethereal, as if they could vanish at any moment.
“Brother, did you manage to resolve it?” I whispered.
He nodded and then shook his head.
“What do you mean?” I asked in confusion.
“That woman got away, but her son is dead,” he sighed.
“Dead?” I looked at him in shock.
“Yes, dead,” he confirmed with a nod.
“What exactly happened?” Grandfather asked.
“That woman took two hundred thousand and sent her son to propose to his girlfriend with the money,” my brother explained. “But unexpectedly, that girl ran off with another man along with the Bride Price.”
“The Sunglasses Man chased after her on a motorcycle, but he was going too fast and crashed into a bridge.”
"The motorcycle was going too fast, slicing off his upper body, and he fell into the water."
"My brother detailed the events that unfolded. 'We took the opportunity to gather a group of fish to clean up his flesh and blood.'"
"It seems that woman is too afraid to show her face for now."
"The most important thing now is to handle the affairs of you and your girlfriend."
"Since you have become husband and wife, the previous burial site won't do; it needs to be prepared anew," Grandfather said softly, glancing at us.
After my brother's burial, Grandfather and I inquired for a long time, but that middle-aged woman seemed to have vanished without a trace.
A month passed, and the calls from my teachers urging me to return to school kept coming.
Reluctantly, I had no choice but to ask Grandfather for leave and set off back to school.
"Grandfather, I'll come back to see you when I have time," I said softly, carrying my backpack.
"Yes, go back. Remember to study hard," Grandfather patted my shoulder, his eyes slightly moist.
I nodded and turned towards the bus station.
Sitting on the bus, my mind was filled with thoughts. My brother's matter had come to a close, yet I felt an emptiness inside, as if something was about to happen.
At a highway rest area, the driver stopped for a break, allowing us to stretch our legs.
I got off the bus and went to the restroom first.
But when I came out, I saw that Corpse Puppet and that woman.
"What a coincidence?" I thought with a jolt in my heart.
Just as I was about to turn and run, the Corpse Puppet grabbed me tightly.
"Let go of me!" I shouted desperately, but it was futile; I was knocked unconscious with a slap.
When I woke up, I found myself tied up in an abandoned factory. The middle-aged woman stood not far from me.
"You killed my son; I want your life in return!" she shouted angrily, her eyes bloodshot with rage.
"Don't talk nonsense. When did I kill your son?" I frowned and said in a low voice.
"Hmph, you don't need to deny it. Once my son absorbs your flesh and blood, he will be resurrected!" The middle-aged woman scoffed.
"You've lost your mind! Even if you kill me, your son won't come back to life!" I shouted angrily.
"No, he can! As long as I force your soul out, my son can occupy your body and he will come back to life!" The woman yelled furiously, then took out an oil lamp and placed it above my head.
"Do you know what this is?" she sneered.
"This is the Soul Exchange Lamp. Once I light it, your Three Souls and Seven Spirits will be forced out and enter this Corpse Puppet!"
Hearing this, my face changed dramatically. I struggled desperately, but my hands and feet were bound; I couldn't move at all.
"There's no use in struggling!" The woman laughed coldly as she picked up a lighter and ignited the oil lamp.
As the lamp was lit, a strange sensation filled my mind. My eyelids felt heavier, and I became increasingly drowsy, as if my soul was truly about to leave my body.
"I'm so tired..." I murmured.
"Don't worry, son. Mom will bring you back to life right away!" The middle-aged woman trembled with excitement.
At that moment, I had no way out and could only wait quietly for death. Just as my consciousness was about to fade away, I suddenly felt a gust of wind sweep past me, revitalizing my spirit.
I opened my eyes to see my grandfather standing in front of me, his Copper Coin Sword knocking the oil lamp to the ground. My brother and sister-in-law also appeared in front of the Corpse Puppet, engaging it in battle.
"What are you doing here?" I asked in surprise.
"We guessed that this woman wouldn't give up easily and would definitely come after you, so we followed you quietly," my grandfather said as he tore off the tape from my mouth.
Just when I thought I was finally saved, the situation worsened. Although my brother and sister-in-law were spirit entities attached to the Paper Man and could handle ordinary people without issue, they were no match for the powerful Corpse Puppet. They were being pushed back relentlessly.
Seeing this, my grandfather quickly took out two more Paper Men and began chanting spells.
"Heavenly Clarity and Earthly Spirit! Soldiers follow the orders, troops move with the seal, and warriors act upon the command. I obey the decree of the Maoshan Patriarch. Quickly summon the Divine General to possess me, urgently as per the law!"
After reciting the incantation, I pointed my fingers at the Paper Man.
The Paper Man sprang to life, leaping up and swiftly merging into my brother and sister-in-law. With the enhancement of the spell, their combat became even more intense.
Though the Corpse Puppet was immensely powerful, it gradually found itself at a disadvantage. My brother and sister-in-law continuously inflicted deep wounds upon the Corpse Puppet, from which black smoke began to rise.
Suddenly, the Corpse Puppet let out a deafening roar. Its body began to swell, its eyes turned blood red, and its arms expanded dramatically, with nails sharpening like blades. Black mist erupted from its seven orifices.
The Corpse Puppet's attacks grew increasingly frenzied. My brother and sister-in-law staggered under the weight of its blows. I wanted to rush in to help, but as an ordinary person, I would only be seeking death and becoming a burden to them.
Grandfather was still locked in a standoff with the middle-aged woman and couldn't break free. What should I do? What should I do? I was sweating profusely with anxiety.
In my desperation, I felt for the Kui pendant hanging on my chest. Right! The Kui has two pieces; when combined, they form a powerful artifact, and the other piece was with my brother.
"Brother, use the Kui! Combine them!" I shouted as I threw it out.
He caught it behind his back and quickly fused it with his own piece. At that moment, the Corpse Puppet leaped into the air, diving down towards my brother and sister-in-law.
Sister-in-law was sent flying by a punch from the Corpse Puppet, and my brother was pinned beneath it.
"Brother! Xiao Tian!" Grandfather and I shouted simultaneously.
"Is it too late? Or does the Kui not work at all?" My eyes widened in horror as my body went rigid.
Just when despair washed over me and I prepared to charge at the Corpse Puppet in a last-ditch effort, a blinding white light suddenly burst forth from its rear skull.
In an instant, the head of the Corpse Puppet exploded.
My brother and sister-in-law had narrowly escaped death.
Seeing this, Grandfather finally sighed in relief and wielded his Copper Coin Sword to attack the middle-aged woman again.
"Wait!"
The middle-aged woman suddenly shouted.
Grandfather paused in surprise.
"Let's make peace," she said softly.
"Reconciliation? You've committed countless atrocities, creating Corpse Puppets. How could there possibly be reconciliation?"
"You old fool, don't push your luck! Do you believe I won't drag you down with me?" The middle-aged woman glared fiercely at Grandpa.
"Hmph, if you have the guts, then come and try!" Grandpa snorted coldly.
"Ah! I'll fight you to the death!" The middle-aged woman shouted and charged at Grandpa.
"You're asking for death!" Grandpa sneered, raising the Copper Coin Sword to stab at her.
But to my surprise, the middle-aged woman grasped the Copper Coin Sword with her bare hands, allowing it to pierce through her body.
"This..." I widened my eyes in disbelief at what was unfolding before me.
With an enraged roar, the middle-aged woman suddenly erupted with countless tendrils of black mist that enveloped Grandpa entirely.
"This is... Corpse Poison!" Grandpa's expression changed dramatically.
"I want you to accompany my son in death!"
"None of you will leave here alive today!" The middle-aged woman laughed maniacally.
"What do we do? What do we do?" I was frantic, but felt utterly helpless.
"We don't have much time. I'll control her body; Xiaoli, you destroy her soul!" My brother shouted as he rushed toward the middle-aged woman.
My sister-in-law nodded and followed him into the fray.
My brother pressed both hands firmly on the woman's shoulders while my sister-in-law raised the Copper Coin Sword high.
The Copper Coin Sword shone brilliantly, directly forcing the middle-aged woman's soul out of her body.
"Die!" My sister-in-law yelled as she swung the Copper Coin Sword at the woman's soul.
"No!" The middle-aged woman screamed.
In the next moment, her soul transformed into swirling white light and dissipated into the air. As she died, the black mist surrounding Grandpa slowly faded away.
Finally, it was over. I collapsed onto the ground, my body aching all over, completely drained of strength.
At the same time, my stomach was churning violently, and I spat out a mouthful of black liquid that smelled horrendous.
"How are you feeling? Better?" Grandpa asked, patting my back with concern.
"Much better," I replied with a bitter smile and a nod.
Just then, my brother walked over.
"Gangzi, this will be yours to keep from now on." He opened his palm to reveal a piece of jade, the other half of Kui.
"When Kui is whole, no evil can harm you," my brother said with a smile.
"Brother, you and Sister-in-law..." My eyes grew misty.
I knew my brother and Sister-in-law had fulfilled their wishes and were ready to leave.
"Grandpa, Gangzi, take care of yourselves," my brother and Sister-in-law knelt down to bow to Grandpa.
At that moment, tears streamed down Grandpa's face.
...
Looking at the Paper Man left on the ground, I wiped my eyes.
I silently wished for my brother and Sister-in-law to be together in their next life and to live happily.
I turned to Kui, paused for a moment in silence, then said earnestly, "Grandpa, I want to learn Body Retrieval."
"Are you ready?" Grandpa looked at me seriously.
"Yes." I tightened my grip on the jade Kui and smiled.
Grandpa pondered for a few seconds.
"Alright, I'll teach you!"
