I am somewhat skeptical about the notion of a Demon God. In fact, I don't believe it at all. If it weren't for my mother's stubbornness in insisting that I wear some kind of blessed Chain, I wouldn't think there were any ghosts in this world!
After taking care of my personal matters early in the morning, I had to pick up a broom and walk around, trying to clean up as much as possible before heading out.
When I stepped outside, the sun was already shining brightly. Unfortunately, as I opened the door and stepped out... whoosh! My right foot slipped as if I had stepped on something. Could it be dog poop? That thought crossed my mind, and when I looked down closely, what the heck! Who was the prankster that scattered a pile of white powder at my doorstep?
Annoyed, I turned back to grab a dustpan to sweep away this mysterious powder.
"Hey! What are you doing?" A loud shout startled me, and Yilan Shan burst through the door, glaring at me. "You're asking for trouble! You can't sweep this away; it's meant to stay here for the wandering spirits."
I didn't feel much at first, but her sudden outburst sent chills down my spine. It felt like something was lurking just out of sight, very close to me!!! So cold! Instinctively, I shrank my neck and hurriedly said to the hostess, "I... I've already stepped on it; what should I do?"
"It's fine, just go inside!" Yilan Shan told me to go in while she stayed behind, hands clasped together in prayer as she murmured something. Probably asking for forgiveness from the spirits or something like that! Lost in thought, I almost collided with Mute Aunt, who stood silently at the entrance.
"Ah!" I wasn't scared by ghosts but by Mute Aunt's eerie gaze that sent shivers down my spine. Caught off guard, I gasped. "Aunt..."
Calling her was pointless; how could she respond since she was mute? Fearfully, I walked past her without looking back but could feel her turning to continue staring at my back.
That gaze was peculiar; it didn't feel like she was looking at a person but rather as if she had seen a ghost. My scalp had tingled before; now it was my back that felt prickly.
I stopped abruptly and turned around... but Mute Aunt was gone from where she had been standing.
The strange feeling Mute Aunt gave me stemmed entirely from her ghostly black clothing. Dressed in black, with a pale face and sunken eyes, she exuded an aura of misfortune. Her skin had lost the luster that is precious to a woman; it looked as dry as lifeless tree bark hanging on a skeletal frame. Aside from being able to walk mechanically, she could also cook exceptionally well.
Yilan Shan mentioned that Mute Aunt wasn't actually that old; she would turn 42 soon.
After placing the dustpan and broom aside, I looked up to see Mute Aunt and Yilan Shan entering one after another. They walked straight towards me; I sensed they might have something to say.
Yilan Shan settled onto the sofa and waved at me, saying, "Ding Li, come sit for a while."
I glanced nervously at the Mute Aunt, who had always disliked sitting on the sofa, before awkwardly walking over. "Sister Yi..."
"Do you know about Ghost Month?" she asked, her gaze lingering on the Jade Guanyin Chain around my neck.
I cautiously replied, "Yes."
"Do you believe in Demon Gods?"
Oh! So that's what she wanted to ask? I sighed in relief; as long as she didn't bring up the phone issue, everything would be fine. "Not really..." I wasn't sure if that answer would satisfy her.
"Then why are you wearing an amulet?" As she spoke, she reached out to weigh the Jade Guanyin Chain around my neck. "Good quality, quite heavy." Perhaps that was why she was curious about why I was working as a nanny! Besides, I had filled out 'none' for my occupation and 'student' for my personal description.
"I generally believe in not doubting those I employ," Yilan Shan continued. "Regardless of where you come from or what your intentions are, it doesn't affect your work situation these past few days." What was Yilan Shan trying to say? I felt confused and thought she was being deliberately cryptic.
I nodded and forced a wry smile. "This is a birthday gift from my mother; it doesn't have a direct connection to believing in Demon Gods, does it?"
"If you don't believe, then why wear it?" A strange intensity flashed in Yilan Shan's eyes as she let go of the Chain. "This month is Ghost Month; Yama King will grant amnesty to the spirits in the underworld, which is why July is known as Ghost Month. During this time, we all need to be cautious. You just stepped on that pile of powder burned for the spirits; I've already prayed for you, so you should be fine."
"I'm deeply grateful," I complimented her, genuinely indifferent to the matter. It was just a pile of ash—was it really necessary to make such a fuss?
"My aunt and I are very satisfied with your work. We're going to take a trip to the town soon; remember what I told you. Don't wander around carelessly; you need to take care of this house. If this continues, I'll definitely consider giving you a raise."
"Thank you..." In a moment of pride, I forgot about the quiet person beside me. When I looked at her again, she still wore an expression of discontent. If this matter passed without incident, perhaps I wouldn't be curious about other events, and maybe the subsequent stories wouldn't unfold.
Curiosity is a psychological tendency that drives everyone to explore new things, serving as the internal motivation that pushes us to observe the world and engage in creative thinking. So, when I looked up at the high-end decorative paper box on the wardrobe in my bedroom, I didn't think much of it. I tiptoed effortlessly and grabbed the box.
What is this? I fiddled with the paper box, feeling its weight. What’s inside? My awareness and actions were in sync as I lifted the lid, only to discover a plethora of items inside, all belonging to a girl...
A beautiful yet outdated handbag, along with other delicate trinkets. Oh, and there was a photograph too. Most surprisingly, there was also a violet long skirt tucked inside.
Though the skirt was somewhat old-fashioned, its style was still quite chic. This skirt was clearly made in a place far beyond the capabilities of an ordinary clothing factory.
Holding the skirt made me feel enchanted. I found myself stripping off my own clothes and slowly putting on this skirt that didn’t belong to me.
Wow! My petite figure, already delicate, appeared even more curvaceous in this fitted satin gown that resembled a cheongsam.
Feeling pleased with myself, I posed in front of the mirror, grinning like an idiot! There was a particularly strange sensation; the person in the mirror and the one outside it felt like two different individuals.
I don’t know how long I had been messing around in front of the mirror, but suddenly I snapped back to reality when I heard voices and footsteps from outside—Yilan Shan and Mute Aunt were back.
Damn it! There’s no time to take off this skirt. What should I do?
