"Don't be afraid, she is my strategist."
"Afraid? How do you write 'afraid'?" Xiao Qiang retorted stubbornly. To be honest, standing in the Vampire Lair, saying he wasn't afraid would be a lie. As they entered the main dark chamber, a hurried figure passed by with their head down, catching Xiao Qiang's attention. "Him? Isn't he one of your kind?" Ever since his mutation and evolution, his sense of smell and hearing had greatly enhanced. Otherwise, how could he have detected the components of Cold Star's blood as coming from a pure Vampire Family in such a short time? In that fleeting moment, he sensed a familiar aura from the young man's blood as he walked past.
This aura momentarily disturbed his mind; it was both familiar and elusive, like a whisper that couldn't be grasped. Xiao Qiang paused, suddenly turning to gaze at the young man who had already walked far away, continuing to ask, "Who is he?"
Cold Star didn't understand why Xiao Qiang was interested in the passing slave. She nodded, a smile appearing at the corner of her lips. "He's an obscure slave."
"A slave?" Xiao Qiang looked around and indeed noticed many others dressed similarly to that young man working nearby. "Are they all slaves?" As he spoke, he felt one of the slaves glare at him with hostility. What does that mean? Curiosity killed the cat; before he could voice his question, Cold Star had already answered.
"Yes, but don't keep staring at them."
"Why not?"
"Because they are Werewolves."
"Using Werewolves as slaves? I can't believe Cold Star's father thought of that." These slaves wore iron collars around their necks, with sharp protrusions like blades sticking out from them. "Do they transform into Werewolves on full moon nights?"
"No, my father developed a special serum specifically injected into them to prevent them from transforming and harming humans."
"Oh. So you also protect humans?"
As the conversation edged closer to the information he wanted to know, Cold Star suddenly became cautious. Her voice lowered significantly, and she distanced herself from Xiao Qiang, walking quickly.
She was the kind of girl who wasn't tiresome to look at; her lazy demeanor and narrow eyes were deep and enchanting. Dressed entirely in black, she wrapped her petite figure elegantly, her flowing garments billowing as she moved swiftly into an arched doorway.
Just as Xiao Qiang was about to follow her inside, he was stopped by two burly men at the entrance. Moments later, a voice called from within: "Noble guests outside, please enter." The voice was old and hoarse; even from outside the door, he could sense an overwhelming aura emanating from within.
It seems that Cold Star's father is indeed an Elder Zombie, but this powerful aura feels like it belongs to more than just one Elder Zombie. What lies behind the door? Who else is inside?
Xiao Qiang stood still for a moment, adjusting his attire. Two burly men pushed open the door, and he strode right in. As he crossed the threshold, a chilling array of gazes fell upon him like spotlights.
Sensing he was stepping into a circle of such overwhelming presence, Xiao Qiang instinctively straightened his back, ignoring the scrutinizing stares that felt like beams of light, and walked in with confident strides.
In his line of sight, these spotlights originated from a row of individuals sitting upright in a semicircle. At that moment, Xiao Qiang did not understand how they were welcoming Cold Star's savior; his gentlemanly demeanor and poise left everyone present in awe.
Cold Star stood to one side, respectfully addressing those present: "Star's life was saved by this brave warrior."
The elder seated on the largest chair, though gaunt in appearance, had eyes that shot forth a cold brilliance, locking onto Xiao Qiang's face like a sword's glare.
Only an old zombie could possess such a fierce and intimidating gaze. Unfazed, Xiao Qiang met the elder's piercing look head-on.
A hoarse voice emerged, carrying an air of authority and undeniable intimidation. "What is the name of this warrior?"
"Wildfire."
As Xiao Qiang spoke his name, whispers filled the room, followed by shaking heads as many denied ever having heard of him.
The elder was none other than Cold Star's father, Han Shaoyu. He cautiously surveyed Xiao Qiang from his elevated position and thought to himself: It cannot be that an unknown youth has come; he must possess extraordinary qualities to have saved Star.
He failed to sense the young man's aura for a reason—Xiao Qiang had held back his energy the moment he entered, straightening his spine and suppressing any outward display of power. Thus, they were unable to determine whether he possessed any abilities.
Han Shaoyu turned to his daughter Cold Star and asked, "Star, how do you wish to thank this warrior who saved you?"
"Father, weren't you looking to recruit capable individuals? I think you should make him the leader of the Imperial Guard."
Xiao Qiang was taken aback, but he remained composed and continued to observe.
Han Shaoyu pondered for a moment, and a glimmer of understanding crossed his sharp eyes, along with a hint of contemplation. He then leaned in to whisper with the other attendees, and finally, they all fell silent, staring intently at Xiao Qiang.
Han Shaoyu announced, "Regarding the position of the Imperial Guard leader, we cannot reach a conclusion just yet; it will depend on this Wildfire warrior's perseverance and contributions."
Cold Star felt disheartened after her recommendation for Xiao Qiang to become the future leader of the Imperial Guard failed. With a gloomy expression, she left the council hall alongside him. Once they reached a more secluded area and ensured no one else was around, she put on a calm facade and offered him an apologetic consolation. "Father said he would give you a chance; make sure to seize it."
However, Xiao Qiang sensed that it wouldn't be that simple. Judging by Han Shaoyu's unfriendly gaze earlier, the old fox must have some plans in mind!
The vampire's lair spanned several valleys, concealing many unknown dark passages within its peaks. Each passage had different mechanisms set up, and the vampires residing in this natural fortress had clearly defined roles and hierarchies.
Under Cold Star's influence, the vampires in the castle treated Xiao Qiang relatively well. However, they were exceedingly cruel and brutal towards those Wolfman Slaves controlled by iron collars. The vampire overseers supervising the slaves wielded whips mercilessly, striking any slave who made even the slightest mistake until their skin was torn and bloodied.
Xiao Qiang felt deep sympathy for these oppressed slaves who endured hardship in silence. Yet he dared not communicate freely with them until one day when a young man he had previously met appeared before him again. He resolved to help these slaves.
Cold Star mentioned that the young man's surname was Xiao and his name was Xiao Yu! She also pointed out that if one looked closely, they would notice that Xiao Yu bore a striking resemblance to him.
