The V2 virus is a genetically mutated cell that merges with the human body and cells due to nuclear radiation. At unpredictable and uncontrollable times, the Zombie Virus erupts, taking control of a person's brain and rapidly devouring beneficial cells within the body, invading the central nervous system in the brain, ultimately leading to mutation into a zombie.
"The behavior and actions of zombies are terrifying; they drool with copious amounts of blood and saliva," Dr. Li Wen pointed at the screen displaying patients infected with the V2 Zombie Virus and continued, "They have only one thought: an endless hunger for bloody flesh, human Brain Essence, and blood."
Lin Yu entered the conference room, her face pale, her emotions agitated as her anxious gaze swept over Li Wen.
Seeing her like this, Li Wen understood. He handed over the remaining explanation topics to his assistant and walked down from the podium to sit beside her. "Is something wrong?" he asked softly.
"Um, you carry on with your work, Teacher!"
"The synthetic immune Gene Protein project is crucial and must be executed. However, our hospital lacks the resources to initiate it, so we need to raise funds." He discreetly pointed at those seated around them. "Their relatives and friends are counting on the successful synthesis of the vaccine Gene Protein."
Lin Yu took out a stack of money from her bag, her sincere eyes looking at Li Wen. "I want to invest too; I wish for the project's success."
Li Wen was surprised and momentarily did not take the money. His keen eyes locked onto Lin Yu's. "You didn't come to me just to invest, did you?" He sensed that unless she revealed the truth, he wouldn't recklessly accept her investment.
Lin Yu struggled to control her emotions that were on the verge of breaking down; tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke in a choked voice, "I... I came to see you about something important, but please take the money first. Can we talk after?"
"Keep your money for now; let's talk outside," Li Wen said as he stood up and led the way out.
Lin Yu deliberately lagged behind a bit before calmly following him outside where Li Wen was waiting.
"Let's talk in the elevator," Li Wen suggested. He was always cautious in his actions and suspected that Lin Yu had come for a significant reason since she had made a special trip.
To him, Lin Yu seemed like an ant on a hot pan, flustered and out of sorts. It appeared that apart from some exceptionally difficult emergencies, nothing else could rattle this strong girl.
Once they entered the elevator, Lin Yu presented Li Wen with a particularly tricky problem.
As Lin Yu and Li Wen were in the elevator, Xiao Qiang was in a state of panic. The theft of the Vaccine Protein weighed heavily on his mind. He couldn't remain calm; he was racking his brain for a way to prevent the terrifying situation that would arise during the outbreak of the V2 Zombie Virus from frightening Lin Yu.
He considered going to the small town to buy an oversized iron chain and lock, planning to lock himself up just before the expected outbreak of the V2 Zombie Virus. This way, he could avoid harming his loved one and still have a chance to say a few farewell words within a controlled environment.
Xiao Qiang was not afraid of death; what terrified him was the thought of not dying.
It took him less than five minutes to ride his bike to the small town, which was sparsely populated and eerily quiet. Xiao Qiang easily found the Hardware Store, spotting the Iron Chain through the display window.
The store door was open, so he walked in directly to check out the thick Iron Chain, which looked quite sturdy. Each link was as thick as his thumb, and the entire chain seemed durable enough that it wouldn't break under physical strain.
Strangely, there appeared to be no one in the store. After calling out several times without receiving a response, Xiao Qiang decided to look elsewhere or perhaps contact Lin Yu to bring something back.
Just as he turned to leave, he suddenly heard strange sounds coming from behind the counter, resembling grunting noises like a pig rooting for food.
Curious about the odd sounds, Xiao Qiang didn’t leave but instead sought out their source. As he rounded the counter and entered a dimly lit room cluttered with junk, he was horrified by what he saw.
An iron chain, thick as his thumb, was used to restrain a V2 Zombie Virus infected individual. On the ground lay a mangled corpse; it appeared lifeless with blood smeared across its abdomen. The infected person was hunched over, pulling bloody intestines from the deceased's belly and shoving them into their mouth!
At the feet of the corpse was a pot filled with blood and rotting animal carcasses. From what remained of the deceased's head, it was evident that this person was the father of the V2 Zombie Virus infected individual.
After the outbreak of the virus, this son had devoured his own father—such cruelty was beyond comprehension.
A wave of nausea surged up Xiao Qiang's throat as he stumbled backward. His movement startled the infected individual who was greedily chewing on intestines; it suddenly lifted its head and stared at him with blood-red eyes devoid of humanity.
Seeing the zombie's grotesque and bloodied face made Xiao Qiang want to flee immediately. But as soon as he moved, the zombie let out a terrifying scream and lunged at him… The Iron Chain was long enough that it nearly caught him. The fright sent chills down his spine as he hurriedly retreated.
The zombie couldn't reach him and let out a wild scream. Xiao Qiang saw that it was no longer human, indistinguishable from a beast, and thought it would be better to end its suffering. With that in mind, he turned to the shipping container and picked up a shovel.
Gripping the shovel tightly, he swung it down at the lunging zombie, aiming for its throat. The blow was brutal, severing the zombie's head and neck almost completely.
A trachea connected the head to the neck, yet the damned zombie continued to roar defiantly, blood gushing from its open mouth. Without hesitation, Xiao Qiang decisively used the shovel to cut through the trachea. The howling noise finally ceased, leaving him feeling exhausted and drained. Killing this vicious V2 virus zombie felt more tiring than taking down those Mutated Skeletons.
He took hold of an Iron Chain and packed it into a bag before walking out of the grocery store. The various assumptions and reluctance he had when he arrived were now irrelevant; he had witnessed firsthand the horror following the outbreak of the V2 Zombie Virus.
The only thing left to do was protect Lin Yu from harm; he had to make a choice.
Lin Yu had posed a dilemma to Li Wen: she hoped he could buy the vaccine Gene Protein that the research team had preserved for her.
Li Wen shook her head solemnly and said, "Lin Yu, this isn't something I can decide alone. There are many people in the research team who know this thing is stored with me. You understand the current situation. The shortage of natural vaccines Gene Protein is not temporary; it's permanent. Whether we can successfully synthesize Vaccine Protein remains uncertain."
The astute Lin Yu understood these truths; she recognized her teacher's helplessness. With her brows furrowed in thought, she decisively closed the elevator door and stepped forward to the entrance, saying, "I understand, teacher. I’ve put you in a difficult position."
Gazing at her favorite student, Li Wen felt a deep pang of sorrow in his heart. He wondered what she intended to do with those fifty doses of Gene Protein—was it for herself or for others? Just as she was about to disappear around the corner, he suddenly called out, "Wait."
