Xiao Qiang was punished. The reason for his punishment was that he had spied on the only female soldier in the military camp, the tough hero known as Metal Slut, while she was taking a shower. This accusation was serious enough to warrant his discharge and subject him to oversight by local law enforcement.
It was unfortunate for him; he knew her, but she did not remember him.
Moreover, there was only one female soldier in the camp, and she was now a model and hero of the entire Vanguard Joint Defense Force.
As a newcomer, Xiao Qiang had violated an unspoken rule of the military camp: to maintain a respectful distance and not disturb the privacy of others. Instead of admitting his mistake, he shamelessly claimed that Number 22, Metal Slut, was his girlfriend.
This escalated the situation dramatically. Captain L arrived promptly and ordered Liu Yi to tie up Xiao Qiang. As Liu Yi bound him, Xiao Qiang struggled, veins bulging as he shouted at Number 22, who had calmed down from her embarrassment: "Lin Yu! I am Xiao Qiang! Strong Guy!"
Number 22 looked at him with suspicion, trying hard to recall something that remained hazy and elusive. He seemed familiar yet strange to her. Finally, she tossed out a parting remark: "Don't discharge him yet; let me think," before turning away without looking back.
Xiao Qiang squirmed against the ropes digging into his skin, jumping around as he continued to shout: "Have you forgotten our vow? You wanted a peaceful place for just the two of us—a beautiful pond where your favorite fish swim, flowers and plants growing on the ground... Have you forgotten all of this?"
Liu Yi's dark eyes were filled with mockery and disdain, but he maintained a facade of concern for his subordinate. "Stop shouting; look at what trouble you've caused."
Captain L shot a glare at Xiao Qiang and reprimanded Liu Yi: "Why didn't you keep an eye on him?"
"Who knew? I stepped out for just a moment, and he..."
Now quieted down, Xiao Qiang felt that something strange had occurred. He distinctly remembered there being no one else in the shower room earlier; how could she have appeared? In his panic, he had forgotten that he was supposed to erase memories here. It seemed Lin Yu could not remember him.
Thinking about it made his heart ache. If two people in love had their memories erased, it would be one thing; but why was it Lin Yu who forgot him while he retained his memories? The heart-wrenching pain of being forgotten by a loved one weighed heavily on him. Unwillingly, he gazed in the direction Lin Yu had gone, feeling a sting in his nose as tears brimmed in his eyes. They rolled down to his lips, salty as he absentmindedly licked them away.
Reality is harsh. Xiao Qiang, having once again violated the unspoken rules of the military camp, must face punishment. He was not discharged, which suggests that the goddess's words still hold some weight. Suddenly, he feels a bit abrupt and, filled with shame, thinks he owes her an apology. If only he could have the chance to apologize to her in person.
To wait for that opportunity, Xiao Qiang cannot let his personal emotions and the pain of being forgotten lead him to leave recklessly. He must endure humiliation and continue to wait for a second chance to meet her.
Captain L assigned the task of punishing Wildfire to the leader of Team N.
Thus, under everyone's watchful eyes, Xiao Qiang was stripped of his shirt. From start to finish, he felt like a child who had made a mistake. Despite the humiliation, he remained silent even though it pained him deeply.
The leader punished him by making him patrol naked. While the soldiers in the camp were asleep, Xiao Qiang, shirtless and armed, patrolled the perimeter of the camp. During the day, with sunlight and relatively mild weather, he did not feel cold. However, at night, being close to the coast, waves of salty sea breeze swept over the makeshift fence and hit him relentlessly.
Cold. It was so damn cold. Xiao Qiang hugged his gun and ran vigorously around the area until he was exhausted and gasping for breath. The dark sky seemed endless, with no edge in sight.
The roaring sound of the sea reached his ears on the wind, sounding like countless spirits crying out in anguish. During the day, one would not hear the crashing waves against the rocks; thus, he longed to see it—the sea rushing in, raising waves that crashed against the resilient rocks in a breathtaking spectacle.
It was reason that controlled Xiao Qiang's impulsive thoughts. He told himself: I cannot make another mistake; otherwise, I will truly never have a chance to see her again. The awkward encounter in the shower room had led to an unexpected situation that made him wish he could just disappear into the ground. He wondered what kind of scenario would bring them together next time.
After a change of guards, Xiao Qiang returned to Team N's campsite, drenched in sweat and with flushed skin. He slipped into his sleeping bag without disturbing anyone and lay there for a long time; the thin sleeping bag seemed unable to retain any warmth from his body.
With thoughts of Lin Yu shadowing him, Xiao Qiang tossed and turned restlessly. Each time he moved, the wooden bed creaked loudly. Despite this noise, the seemingly dead-to-the-world members of Team N continued to snore loudly and mutter in their sleep—sounds sharp and grating like chewing on bones.
The heat from his body seemed to be absorbed by the sleeping bag instead. Xiao Qiang felt a chill creeping in as he curled up tightly like a shrimp, bending his back and tucking his head and feet close enough to embrace.
Finally feeling a hint of drowsiness, he drifted into a hazy state where he thought he heard someone whispering.
"Leader, this guy has an unknown background. Look at how you've made him look; ha ha! He should be obedient now," said Barbarian from bunk number six.
"Hmph! Coming in here trying to act tough without understanding the rules for newcomers. A hundred push-ups and twenty laps didn't faze him; we can only play our part as small people," Liu Yi replied coldly.
"Shh! What if he hears us?" someone from bunk number four cautioned.
"We gave him a summer sleeping bag; it seems like running around outside warmed him up because he's sleeping so soundly," Barbarian said boastfully.
"Pfft! That's just his luck. I went to grab some shower gel and ran into the goddess. She asked if anyone was in the shower room; I casually replied there was someone—she thought it was me—so she didn’t ask further and went into my previous stall number three to shower... Damn it! He got lucky while we’ve been suffering here for so long without even getting a glimpse of her!" Liu Yi dragged out his words with a lewd tone.
Some couldn't hold back their laughter and covered their mouths as they chuckled quietly; their exaggerated laughter shook the wooden bed.
Xiao Qiang suddenly sat up from his bunk, legs flailing as he pinned down those who were snickering on either side of him with all his might. With a swift kick and turn, he stood up and threw a punch that landed squarely on Liu Yi's face.
In an instant, chaos erupted in Team N's campsite—screams filled the air as some begged for mercy while others stubbornly endured their injuries with new bruises added to their bodies.
