The sunlight penetrated the water's surface, casting a golden orange glow that shimmered with an illusion of sparkling waves after several refractions. Beneath the water, a layer of glass-like green light suddenly emerged, swaying and vibrating as if it were tangible.
Bubbles began to rise from where the wheels had sunk, and algae danced gracefully on the water's surface, playfully splashing against the car window.
In an instant, an unexpected collision occurred, resulting in a severe crash involving two vehicles. Among the injured were three people in one car, including a father and his daughter. In the back seat lay another man who appeared to be unconscious. After the impact, the car rolled over and tumbled into the river beside the road.
Xiao Qiang felt a strange connection to the water; it was the bubbling outside the window that roused him from his stupor. His head throbbed with pain as he looked around in confusion, struggling to recall how he had ended up in this car and how he had fallen into the river.
After a long moment of contemplation, his injured brain succumbed to fatigue. The pain intensified, forcing him to abandon his thoughts. He tentatively pushed against the window, but it remained immovable and unyielding. It dawned on him that the window was automatically sealed shut due to its waterproof control system.
If he stayed in the car much longer, he would surely suffocate. Rather than wait for death, he decided to fight for his life. He slammed his elbow against the window, which responded with a dull thud but showed no signs of giving way.
In desperation, Xiao Qiang leaned forward slightly; even that small movement caused ripples in the water surrounding them. The car was moving? He wondered if it would slide deeper into the river.
However, upon seeing a girl and a man ahead of him, he felt little hesitation. He reached out to touch the man but quickly realized he was already dead. With no other option, he tried to reach for the girl but found himself stuck in the narrow gap between seats.
The girl was adorable; she stirred awake at Xiao Qiang's movements.
“Shh!” Xiao Qiang raised a finger to his lips and offered her a reassuring look. “Does anything hurt?”
Her eyes were watery, glistening with unshed tears as she glanced around nervously. Her nostrils flared as she spoke in a trembling voice, “My dad... are we going to die?”
“Your dad is gone.” Facing such an innocent and lovely girl, Xiao Qiang found it hard to lie. Yet she was strong; silent tears streamed down her cheeks as she fought to hold back her sobs.
“Are we going to die?”
“No, you have an older brother here with you.”
"Mm." The girl calmed down significantly with Xiao Qiang's encouragement.
To distract her, Xiao Qiang started chatting, "Tell me your name and how old you are."
Perhaps the air in the car was becoming thinner; the girl was having some difficulty breathing. Her nostrils flared frequently, but she still calmly told Xiao Qiang, "My name is Xiao Mei, and I am five years old..."
"Five years old? What year is it now?" Xiao Qiang asked, bewildered, completely unaware of the era he was in. Was it still 2038? But the environment he saw was vastly different from what he had seen back in 2038. This was a simulated space—impossible! Female Robot, Matt, judgment, spinning seats??
Suddenly, he realized something.
"2040," Xiao Mei's reply confirmed what Xiao Qiang had been thinking. Indeed, that damned Matt from 2038 had sent him to the year 2040 during the Robot Era.
But why was he back in this car and ended up in the river? Watching Xiao Mei grow weaker by the moment made his heart ache. He pulled out the cushion from the overturned seat and placed her on it, then struck the car window with all his might again.
After several attempts to break the glass, not only did he fail to shatter it, but the car also began to roll over and slide down to the deepest part of the river. This was it; Xiao Qiang sighed heavily, glancing at Xiao Mei with a bitter smile as he curled up next to her. "It's okay; you have your brother with you. Hang in there!"
Xiao Mei nodded and struggled to muster a sweet smile. "Does brother have a girlfriend?"
"Yes, she's very pretty."
"I can draw. If only there were some pencils here." It seemed like speaking was becoming increasingly difficult for Xiao Mei.
"Don't talk; just rest..." Suddenly, Xiao Qiang felt his throat tighten and his nose tingle. If he died, it wouldn't matter. But Xiao Mei was still so young—a girl so adorable.
"Brother... are you... crying?" Xiao Mei struggled to lift her hand, her cool fingers gently wiping away the tears rolling down Xiao Qiang's cheeks. "Brother, it's a robot..."
"Xiao Mei... don't scare me... you have to be strong..." Xiao Qiang had never felt so dejected, useless, and terrified as he did now; he feared that Xiao Mei might suddenly die. "Xiao Mei, don't sleep; wake up..." With each call, he felt his strength draining away, as if his entire body were being emptied. Breathing became increasingly difficult; something seemed to be blocking his throat.
Just when Xiao Qiang felt utterly hopeless and awaited death, an unexpected face appeared outside the car window—a face that did not resemble a human's at all. It was completely different from the Female Robot wearing realistic masks from 2038. Was this... a robot??
"Your life is in danger," the robot said to Xiao Qiang, its lips moving behind the soundproof glass of the vehicle. Then, the robot extended its finger—made of a special alloy that had withstood countless impacts against the unbreakable glass. Under the pressure of the robot's probing finger, the glass shattered effortlessly.
"Save her..." Xiao Qiang shouted, dodging the robot's outstretched arm and pointing at the girl.
To his surprise, this piece of scrap made from super alloy ignored his plea, continuously repeating, "Sir, your life is at risk." It then grabbed him and pulled him away from the tilting car door, swiftly dragging him to the surface.
Thinking of Xiao Mei's every smile and frown filled Xiao Qiang with anguish. Just as he reached the shore, he wanted to dive back in to rescue her, but the robot seized him around the waist and tossed him into a waiting car on the road, starting the engine and driving off.
Xiao Qiang was taken to the hospital by the robot, which even helped him register. Under the doctor's questioning, he vented his frustration, saying, "I want to report that robot; it just killed a lovely girl named Xiao Mei."
"Sir, please calm down. The NS-2 robot is your savior," the doctor replied skeptically, suspecting that Xiao Qiang was speaking nonsense due to a concussion from the car accident.
Seeing that the doctor didn't believe him, Xiao Qiang grew anxious. "I'm not injured; let me go."
The doctor stubbornly refused to let him leave and called a nurse to administer a sedative. Upon seeing the syringe, Xiao Qiang instinctively pushed the doctor away and bolted for the exit.
