"Dear, your wallet."
"Oh." Xiao Qiang frowned, muttering to himself: Why am I always so forgetful? Why do I feel like everything in front of me has nothing to do with me, yet it undeniably exists?
The woman before him was his fiancée, Lin Yu. He found it strange that there seemed to be an invisible barrier between them. Their days passed in a dull monotony, devoid of any profound love or deep emotional ties.
The concept of a fiancée felt like a term meant to fulfill some predetermined role, relegating him to the status of a mere supporting character. He couldn't even sense her true self, let alone love her.
"Are you daydreaming? What are you thinking about?" His fiancée asked, smiling gently as she handed him the wallet.
Xiao Qiang pondered this question every day. A bizarre thought stubbornly lingered in his mind, making him feel that those around him who smiled at him were all hypocrites, their smiles mere facades.
He felt as if he were in a dream, staring at the Barka Amphibious Concept Car before him. It boasted features like automatic door opening, self-navigation, driving, alarm systems, and even simulated human speech.
Once inside the car, Xiao Qiang didn't have to worry. Barka would drive him automatically to the Kabo branch office, the human gene research base where he worked.
Kabo Corporation served the public and had various types of subsidiaries. Recently, their newly developed Robot Company had garnered significant attention.
The car glided silently down the street, the colorful lights dazzling his eyes. On the large electronic display screen, three beautiful women were featured in an advertisement. With Kabo Corporation set to launch its robot project, promotional ads were unavoidable; at intersections and prominent locations, various robot models stood lifelike and ready for view.
As the car entered a tunnel that arched endlessly into the distance, Xiao Qiang found this segment of the journey particularly unbearable. Often during these tunnel passages, he would feel inexplicably anxious and would close his eyes for a moment of pretend sleep.
At this moment, a simulated beautiful woman was operating the driving controls, allowing him to rest easy. As he slightly closed his eyes, an unfamiliar figure suddenly emerged in his mind—a woman who appeared helpless in his dreams each time they met. Her reaction upon seeing him was akin to that of a fan meeting an idol; it was filled with shyness and ambiguity...
Surprisingly, the feelings he shared with her did not seem foreign; they appeared to be completed within his dreams. The woman in his dreams was the same as his fiancée in reality but possessed a different mindset and disposition.
"Dr. Jock has a message."
As Xiao Qiang lazily recalled the dream from last night, he heard the simulated voice relay the message, prompting him to slightly open his eyes. He glanced up at the monitor on the control panel, where Choke's avatar was displayed, and reached out to press the intercom.
"Good morning, Dr. Jock."
"Good morning, Xiao Qiang," Choke replied with a smile. "How are you feeling today?"
"I'm doing well."
"Great. When will you arrive?"
Xiao Qiang checked the time. "In about ten minutes."
"I'm heading to the Robot Design Department today. Can you help me organize some data when you get here?"
"Sure."
With that, the conversation ended. Xiao Qiang activated manual driving, and the simulated voice retreated beneath the control panel.
The Kabo Corporation's large signs were visible everywhere, but there were no billboards in the tunnel. The entire tunnel resembled a giant aluminum PVC pipe, with vehicles crawling through it like beetles.
Once he emerged from the tunnel, a different scene unfolded before him—simulated trees that changed with the seasons. Everything here felt to Xiao Qiang like it belonged in a comic book; none of it seemed real.
Xiao Qiang was Dr. Jock's assistant and someone Mihir had high hopes for. He didn't particularly like the bald man who frequently visited the company, Professor R, or his assistant, Matt.
Two peculiar individuals, he secretly nicknamed them Frankenstein.
However, Xiao Qiang sensed that they held some special significance for him. He had asked Choke about it multiple times, but was met with various excuses that prevented him from getting an answer.
In fact, he was completely unaware of everything that had happened in his childhood, youth, and adulthood. Mihir informed him that this was one of the conditions for every employee absorbed into Kabo Corporation: they must have their memories wiped before joining.
The white building boasted a spacious and bright office environment. Nano-infrared monitoring scanners meticulously tracked every minute movement, both outside and among the office personnel.
A super voice-activated security door required a keycard to enter. Xiao Qiang waved his keycard in front of the security door.
A simulated human voice announced, “Xiao Qiang, great job, please enter.”
With Choke absent, Xiao Qiang unexpectedly spotted an uninvited guest—a stunning woman.
From the moment she entered until she sat at the desk, she silently observed him.
“Hello,” Xiao Qiang politely extended his hand.
The woman seemed oddly amused, giving a strange smile as she eagerly grabbed his hand. “Hello.” Her alluring gaze swept up and down Xiao Qiang, “You don’t remember me?”
“I'm sorry… who are you?”
“I’m nobody,” the woman reluctantly released his hand, likely because Xiao Qiang had pulled away. Her expression shifted to one of awkwardness as she asked, “Are you Xiao Qiang?”
“That’s right. I’m looking for Dr. Jock, but he’s not here,” Xiao Qiang intended to usher her out but was unsure whether she was looking for Choke or himself.
The woman's eyes flickered. "Is Choke not here?" As she spoke, her gaze shifted cautiously, circling around Xiao Qiang. "Do you work here?"
Xiao Qiang was puzzled. This place belonged to a confidential company, and outsiders were not allowed to enter freely. From the woman's tone, it seemed she wasn't in a hurry but rather here for leisure.
However, judging by her attire and demeanor, there was an alluring charm about her that hinted at something otherworldly. After a flurry of wild guesses, he concluded that this strange woman might be the mistress of the boss from Kabo Group. It would be best for him not to meddle; after all, this was not a place one could enter casually.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but this area is not open to visitors. Please leave," he gestured politely.
"Hmph, I can come and go as I please. I don't need your guidance on when to leave."
"You..."
"Don't worry; I mean no harm and won't hurt you." The woman smiled seductively, leaning close to Xiao Qiang, almost brushing against his cheek and ear, exhaling warm breath as she said, "I have something to tell you."
"You and I have never met; what could you possibly want to say to me?" Xiao Qiang asked, confused.
"Do you know your true identity? Are you sure that who you are now is the real you? And..." The woman glanced cautiously at the door before leaning closer to Xiao Qiang. "Is the person at home human?"
