The house felt cold and desolate, no longer filled with the sight of his wife greeting him with a smile at the door. Zou Bo walked ahead, his expression forlorn and melancholic.
Wu Yi kept his distance, a chill wind blowing in from somewhere, raising goosebumps along his spine. The person who had been standing tall and questioning him just moments ago now appeared slightly hunched.
Looking at the back in front of him, he felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity and warmth. He missed the warm feeling that lingered in his memories.
The dining table was still in disarray, the image of his wife collapsing vividly etched in his mind. Zou Bo's eyes glistened with tears as he pointed to Xiao Qiang's previous seat and said, "He was sitting right there. My wife and I were over here..." His tear-filled gaze drifted to the window, the already shattered glass pane, as he continued, "The bullet came through that window..."
Wu Yi slammed his fist on the dining table and shouted, "Bastard!" His determined gaze fell on the startled Zou Bo. "I’m going to save him, save my brother!" With that, he turned to leave.
Sighing heavily, Zou Bo suddenly spoke up, "What are you going to use to save your brother? They’re not easy to deal with."
Without looking back, Wu Yi strode out confidently. He tossed over his shoulder, "I have my ways."
"Hey, kid, wait..."
Wu Yi stopped in his tracks as Wolf Cub leaped after him but ended up stepping on its paw.
"Woo!" Wolf Cub yelped pitifully, limping away.
Wu Yi crouched down to check which paw he had stepped on.
Zou Bo had disappeared somewhere during their exchange. When he reappeared before Wu Yi, he held a gun in his hand. It was an M-16 assault rifle, equipped with 5.56mm ammunition, widely used by military forces in Western countries like the USA in future times.
The M-16 was renowned for its accuracy and reliability. Zou Bo mentioned that his wife preferred peace and tranquility and disliked having violent weapons in their home. Therefore, he had hidden this gun in the basement and had never taken it out for use.
"Cool! How did you get this gun?" Wu Yi asked curiously as he took the rifle.
"I found it next to a soldier who died on the road."
"Oh, that's awesome." Wu Yi couldn't put it down; he carefully placed it aside and bent down to pick up Wolf Cub, which had been whining at his feet. He sincerely said to Zou Bo, "Uncle, I'll give this to you for company."
Zou Bo shook his head. "I don’t want to be Dong Guo."
"Who is Dong Guo?"
"Dong Guo and the Wolf," he thought, gazing at the small creature that was no bigger than a house pet. A hint of pity flickered in his eyes as he hesitated, wanting to reach out but holding back.
Wu Yi smiled brightly, pushing the Wolf Cub forward. "Don't worry, it's just like my son. It has pure, noble blood. Just pour your love into it, and one day it will repay you."
Zou Bo forced a smile before finally accepting the Wolf Cub. As his fingers brushed against its fluffy fur, he saw his own reflection in its innocent, unthreatening eyes. He also noticed the mischief, helplessness, and loneliness that seeped from its gaze, stirring a deep sense of compassion within him. He tentatively reached out to stroke it.
The Wolf Cub quietly enjoyed the affection, extending its pink tongue to lick Zou Bo's fingers one by one. This warmth filled Zou Bo's heart, and he couldn't help but nuzzle against its trembling back.
Seeing the harmonious interaction between the Wolf Cub and Zou Bo eased Wu Yi's mind.
"Uncle, it will be with you from now on."
"Thank you for this precious gift."
"Take care, Uncle." Wu Yi truly had to leave now, waving goodbye while reluctantly pulling his gaze away from the Wolf Cub. He picked up his gun and glanced back at them one last time. "Take care."
As Wu Yi turned to leave, the Wolf Cub struggled in Zou Bo's arms, nipping at the hand that held it.
"Are you biting me, little rascal?" Zou Bo frowned and loosened his grip, gently placing it on the ground.
The Wolf Cub whimpered and chased after Wu Yi, who continued walking without looking back.
Due to its earlier injury, the Wolf Cub stumbled down the stairs, rolling over with a round body and yelping in pain as it landed awkwardly on the ground.
"This little thing has quite a bit of sentiment," Zou Bo remarked fondly as he witnessed the Wolf Cub's loyalty. He bent down and picked it up again, raising it high in his hands. "See? He's already far away."
With its keen sense of smell, Wu Yi quickly found Nalan's home.
Inside was a chaotic mess; he discovered Xiao Qiang's clothes in the bathroom. Bringing them to his nose, memories flooded back. His late arrival had cost him dearly—his good brother was gone. Deep guilt consumed him; this torment gnawed at Wu Yi's soul until he felt like going mad, craving blood...
"Awooo!" He pounded his chest and howled at the ceiling in despair, revealing sharp teeth as his primal instincts took over.
Descending into the Nalan Family basement, he found rough gray walls shrouded in shadows—some even darker than others. The basement reeked of decay mixed with a sour stench.
Wu Yi stood on the damp, slippery ground, feeling the moisture cling to his feet. He reached out to turn on the light on the wall, which was one of those dual lamps. One of the bulbs seemed to be broken, leaving only a flickering dim red glow from the other.
On the ground lay two sealed jars. Wu Yi recognized these jars; they had appeared in the laboratory of that unnamed hospital.
The jars were empty, save for a suffocating odor that lingered. There was nothing else…
The evidence of Nalan's collusion with the Guerrilla Military was right here. He had been indefinitely supplying infected viruses to be soaked in these sealed jars, allowing corpses to absorb a mixture of formaldehyde before being sent to experimental bases for those mad scientists masquerading as researchers of bioengineered humans, creating weapons of mass destruction.
Wu Yi pulled out his wristwatch and activated a pocket-sized recording device. He needed to document everything to save Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang was currently missing, but just moments ago, when leaving Zou Bo's house, he had hinted at something.
Xiao Qiang was in serious trouble this time and could very well face legal consequences. He might end up taking the fall for someone else!
After capturing all this evidence, Wu Yi found himself at a loss for whom to approach. His thoughts drifted to Xiao Qiang's chain, which he picked up and examined under the dim light.
It seemed he would have to return to the 2050s and seek Matt's help. Activating the Reincarnation Card was no easy task; it depended on timing and circumstances. Sometimes it would activate by coincidence in an instant, while other times it could take ages without success.
