The group sat huddled around the crackling bonfire, the pine branches popping and snapping as they burned. The smoke rising from the flames carried a fragrant aroma that quietly lingered above their heads.
They had built an ambush circle on the outskirts, with Gui Ye and Xiao Qiang devising various traps to guard against the sudden appearance of the Living Dead. Wu Yi was on watch, his keen sense of smell detecting various scents in the air. Regardless of whether it was a foreign land under the dim light of dawn or a moonless night filled with wind, familiar odors subtly crept into their hearts, stirring a primal fascination with the raw essence of the earth.
Xiao Qiang poked at the fire with a stick and sighed heavily, "The Living Dead are evolving; our situation is becoming increasingly dangerous."
At that moment, the air seemed to freeze, filled with an eerie atmosphere. Upon hearing this, Gui Ye felt a wave of gloom wash over him. Each person harbored their own concerns and worries.
"What?" Lin Yu exclaimed in surprise.
Xiao Qiang continued, "Normally, after death, a body becomes increasingly stiff over time. However, corpses infected by the virus are transformed; their bodies become more pliable, but this softness comes at the cost of strength. Initially, they move slowly, but this afternoon we encountered some Living Dead whose movements have changed—especially their legs..."
Gui Ye's two companions listened in fear, feeling an urgent need to relieve themselves as their eyes darted around Gui Ye's grimy hooded face.
"Go ahead!" With permission granted, the two hesitated to rise, unsure where to go to alleviate their discomfort.
Gui Ye was clearly uneasy about their reluctance. Frowning, he scolded them harshly, "Useless fools! What are you afraid of? We have people patrolling outside; just don’t wander too far and take care of it quickly."
The two exchanged glances and nodded silently before shrinking back and slipping away from the fire.
They were also wary of Wu Yi, who had previously teamed up with Gui Ye against him. Thus, they dared not pass by this wolfish figure and chose to leave from the side instead.
Little did they know that this was precisely the gap Xiao Qiang and the others had overlooked. The path was narrow and resembled a steep ladder, overgrown with wild grass. On either side of this natural staircase rose rugged mountains and deep ravines, with sheer cliffs standing tall. From the surface, it appeared to be a natural barrier that required no obstacles; yet still...
Two people had been gone for a long time, and Xiao Qiang and Gui Ye glanced around several times. Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream shattered the tranquility of the night, echoing from a distance. The group instinctively sprang to their feet, rushing to find the source of the sound.
Under the lights set above Gui Ye's head, the ground was rugged and uneven, making it impossible to run without risking a fall. They could only walk slowly, realizing that the two individuals had unknowingly strayed far from them.
When they reached the end of the ladder, they entered a relatively open area, where a shocking scene greeted their eyes. On the ground lay bloody intestines, carelessly dragged across the earth, with drops of blood leading into the Valley.
Seeing this, an ominous feeling crept into their hearts. "Those two..." Gui Ye dared not continue. As they exchanged worried glances, they knew they could not afford to let their guard down; they needed to remain in a state of readiness for any potential attack.
Xiao Qiang approached a severed arm and pointed at the torn flesh above it, saying to Gui Ye and the others, "Look, this arm was ripped apart by immense force. Living Dead do not possess such strength, so I suspect it’s a mutant."
"Mutant?" Wu Yi gasped, recalling the skeletons they had encountered before. The agility and strength of those creatures were far beyond what Living Dead could muster. His voice rose in pitch: "Could it be Mutated Skeleton?"
Xiao Qiang pondered for a moment before shaking his head. "Impossible. Those Mutated Skeletons are R Doctor's creations; they shouldn't exist in this era. However..." He trailed off, gazing toward the Valley, which appeared dark and foreboding as if it concealed a massive beast within, sending chills down their spines.
"What is it?" Lin Yu interjected skeptically.
"We need to check it out to know if I'm right." With that, Xiao Qiang kept his doubts to himself and quickly stood up, leading the way toward the Valley. After running a few steps, he turned back to remind everyone, "Stay together; don’t get separated."
When Xiao Qiang reached the wide area within the Valley, he was taken aback. What appeared before him was not a Living Dead but something monstrous—a creature over three meters tall with bulging muscles. From its face, one could faintly recognize that it had once been human; its features were still discernible. However, aside from that resemblance, there was nothing human about it anymore—its eyes were filled with murderous intent.
It was voraciously chewing on the torn body parts from earlier. Xiao Qiang noticed a severed human calf lingering at its mouth...
Nausea surged in his throat as he fought to suppress it. The composed Thug signaled for everyone to retreat quickly.
"What is this?" Wu Yi ran over, his eyes wide with shock as he exclaimed. He could transform into a werewolf, but even in that form, he only reached just over two meters. The creature before him was on an entirely different level; its fists were the size of barrels, and a blow from it would surely be fatal.
"Don't be surprised, let's take it down first," Xiao Qiang said as he drew his dagger and rushed forward. However, as he got closer, he realized there was no way to attack.
From a distance, the monster appeared drenched in blood, but up close, he discovered that it wasn't blood at all; rather, it was a crimson crystal covering its body. The most vulnerable areas were also where the crystals were most concentrated. Not even a dagger could pierce through, let alone a firearm.
A sudden wolf howl echoed through the air. Wu Yi extended his claws and leaped in front of the monster, seizing the opportunity while it was distracted by Gui Ye's subordinates' gunfire. He slashed at the monster's chest, but all he managed to do was chip away some crystals without inflicting any real damage.
"Lin Yu, come help!" Xiao Qiang called out when he saw that even Wu Yi's attack had no effect. He quickly thought of Lin Yu's telekinesis and urged him to assist.
"No way!" Lin Yu shouted back, explaining loudly, "Get out of here quickly! This monster isn't a mutant from the Living Dead; it's a modified creature infected by the R Virus!"
Seeing that their attacks were futile, Wu Yi began to slowly retreat. Gui Ye was the most unwilling to back down but had no choice; he could only call for the others to leave quickly.
In front of the monster, they felt like insignificant little figures… Fortunately, the creature was preoccupied with its meal and paid no attention to these tiny beings. However, once it finished devouring its prey, their situation would become perilous.
