As they entered the forest, the light dimmed significantly, and the air became damp, filled with a chilling breeze. Stepping on the soft, decaying leaves felt like sinking into the ground. Xiao Qiang was astonished to discover that the forest was actually a graveyard, where the dead had risen again. A group of ragged Living Dead was attacking a woman.
The woman darted left and right, on the verge of being overwhelmed by the Living Dead. With a loud shout, he leaped into the fray, slicing through the ranks of the Living Dead with his sharp dagger as if cutting through watermelons. Heads rolled, some severed completely while others bore deep gashes. Blood splattered everywhere as he moved like a spinning top among the Living Dead.
The woman who managed to escape was no ordinary person; otherwise, she wouldn't have held her ground against so many Living Dead until help arrived.
The grotesque figures of the Living Dead, twisted and terrifying, had been awakened from their graves by a chemical Acid Rain. Their only simple desire was to consume human Brain Essence.
On the ground lay dismembered bodies of the thoroughly dead Living Dead. With Xiao Qiang's arrival, the woman felt a sense of relief amidst the chaos.
Neither had time to greet each other or take a good look at one another. They instinctively coordinated their movements—kicking away approaching Living Dead and swiftly dispatching another with a well-aimed stab from her dagger. The headless body of a Living Dead flailed its arms aimlessly.
Xiao Qiang delivered a powerful punch that shattered the chest cavity of a Living Dead, sticky fluid coating his fingers. He quickly shook it off before launching another attack as another Living Dead lunged at him. His fists proved more agile than his dagger; he struck down those that were severely decayed, snapping necks while exposed jaws clacked together mindlessly.
The woman was also skilled in combat, wielding her knife expertly along with a type of hidden weapon—a diamond-shaped dart that Xiao Qiang had seen before. The number of howling Living Dead dwindled under their combined assault.
When they finally locked eyes at close range, both were taken aback. Time seemed to freeze in that moment; it felt as if they were alone in the entire world.
This sudden moment left them breathless. "Lin Yu?" It was hard to believe or express what they felt in words. Ultimately, Xiao Qiang took a step closer and gazed intently at her, calmly whispering, "Hey! Is it you?"
"..." Lin Yu forgot to respond verbally and could only nod excitedly. Suddenly, her eyes flashed; with quick reflexes, she flicked her fingers and struck down one of the Living Dead attacking Xiao Qiang.
The Living Dead struggled, its withered arms moving sluggishly as it took a step forward before freezing momentarily and then collapsing to the ground with a thud.
Xiao Qiang ignored the Living Dead lying on the ground behind her, her focus entirely on Lin Yu. Suddenly, it seemed she noticed something, and her smile froze, her gaze turning suspicious as she asked, "Did you use a dart?"
Lin Yu hesitated, glancing down at the dart moving between his fingers. He smiled brightly and said, "Oh, you mean this."
"Yeah," Xiao Qiang nodded suspiciously, her eyes fixed on Lin Yu's back. Under her astonished gaze, he raised his hand and with a whoosh! The dagger flew from his hand, striking directly into the forehead of the Living Dead that was trying to bite him from behind.
The wind rustled the leaves, swirling and dancing gently as they fell. In this small area, the ground was a chaotic mess; aside from the two of them who were alive, all that remained were the corpses of the dead.
Xiao Qiang questioned Lin Yu about the dart in his hand. The joy she felt moments ago plummeted—was she a ghost? But her face looked exactly like Lin Yu's.
Lin Yu understood what she was doubting. With a wry smile, he explained while holding up the dart, "Yun gave this to me. She said it belonged to her sister and asked me to keep it for emergencies."
"Are you really Lin Yu?" Xiao Qiang was confused too. Hearing his explanation cleared up much in her mind. She couldn't help but step closer. As their eyes met and they drew nearer, almost able to feel each other's breath, their hearts raced, and the long-lost emotions between them erupted in an instant...
Xiao Qiang had no time to consider where they were or whether there were objections from others; she tightly grasped his hand and pressed against a tree as she kissed him deeply...
"Don't..." Lin Yu wanted to respond but hesitated due to the inappropriate setting. She playfully protested in a low voice but did not reject Xiao Qiang's more fervent advances. In that moment of silence in the forest, vibrant life filled the air. Soft whispers, heavy breaths, and the rustling of leaves combined with dozens of quiet Living Dead watching them created a bizarre panorama of emotional release.
A few mournful bird calls startled the two from their closed-eye reverie beneath the leaves. They rolled over and got up, adjusting their clothes and exchanging glances filled with unspoken words.
Xiao Qiang pinched Lin Yu's cheek seriously, her eyes brimming with affection as she suddenly said, "Severe frost strikes solitary grass."
As Lin Yu brushed a few leaves from his hair, happiness radiated from her face. Upon hearing this deeply concerned remark, she feigned confusion and asked, "What does that mean?"
Xiao Qiang gazed at the dead bodies for a moment before lowering his head and tapping Lin Yu on the forehead. "Why are you so reckless? Going up against so many Living Dead by yourself? Did you not think about the consequences?" He said, grabbing her hand and retreating along the path they came from.
"I... how was I supposed to know? I fell down here without even realizing it, and suddenly these monsters surrounded me. I was terrified..."
"Was it Matt who brought you here?" For some reason, Xiao Qiang felt that something was off, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was. Lin Yu's sudden appearance left him feeling flustered, and it also resolved a lingering concern that had been troubling him.
"Yes," Lin Yu replied vaguely, a smile blooming on her face like a flower. At that moment, she truly resembled a simple woman easily satisfied.
"Wu Yi is here."
"Huh?"
"I said, Wu Yi is here." As they stepped out of the forest, Xiao Qiang stretched lazily. He felt utterly exhausted, as if his body were falling apart... Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to a towering chimney in the distance.
If he wasn't mistaken, that tall chimney was the Incineration Facility that Gui Ye had mentioned. The facility was only a few miles away, with smoke billowing from its top. The corpses being burned there must be the discarded test subjects transported from the hospital.
And these reanimated corpses that were being incinerated contained Nerve Gas, Formaldehyde... everything clicked into place! Suddenly awakened from his thoughts, Xiao Qiang let out a low growl of realization: "This is bad." He grabbed the bewildered Lin Yu and sprinted toward the Gathering Place of Ghosts.
