The sunset cast a crimson hue across half the sky, the world between heaven and earth drenched in blood red. It was like Lin Yu's current dream, where she and Xiao Qiang were fleeing alongside many others, with thousands of Living Dead trailing behind them.
Everywhere she looked, the roads, walls, plants, and overturned vehicles were billowing thick smoke. Blood was everywhere; those attacked by the virus had mutated into terrifying Bloodthirsty Creatures.
They fed on human Brain Essence, and the city was no longer safe. Family and friends had become targets for each other. The viral crisis spread from the city to the countryside; there was no place that was safe, as Bloodthirsty Creatures could emerge at any moment.
The panicking crowd gradually thinned out until only Lin Yu and Xiao Qiang remained. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen. Instinctively, she reached down to cover the painful spot, only to see a trickle of blood seeping through her fingers.
Lin Yu fell to her knees—
Xiao Qiang rushed to embrace her, desperately trying to protect her. Then countless Bloodthirsty Creatures appeared, their faces severely rotting and oozing pus.
The pain made her curl up, her eyes wide as she watched Xiao Qiang punch through a Bloodthirsty Creature's head. She could see him continue fighting through the gaping hole in its skull, battling other Bloodthirsty Creatures.
“Lin Yu… wake up.” A gentle voice called out to her from afar, growing closer until it was right beside her. Slowly opening her eyes, instead of seeing blood red, she was met with anxious faces filled with concern that transformed into joy upon seeing her awake. “Little Lin Yu, you finally woke up.”
Lin Yu glanced around weakly and murmured, “Xiao Qiang, where is he?”
Yun's expression tightened, a serious look crossing her face as she refrained from informing Matt about Lin Yu's awakening. Instead, she leaned closer to Lin Yu's ear and whispered, “I'm sorry, Xiao Qiang hasn't returned.”
“Impossible! I clearly saw him,” Lin Yu said with tears welling in her eyes, unable to believe Yun's words.
“Shh!” Yun raised a finger to her lips and leaned in closer again. “You were in a deep sleep. I transmitted the information I foresaw into your dream to wake you up.”
“Is he in danger? Tell me where Xiao Qiang is!” Lin Yu leaned forward but felt utterly weak.
Yun shifted her gaze, wanting Lin Yu to calm down long enough to listen to her. “Don't rush; it's not time yet.”
“Please help me, big sister! I need to go help him. We are the best partners…” Lin Yu's eyes turned red as she pleaded with a choked voice.
“Lin Yu, listen to me. We can't rush this; we need to wait for Matt's approval first. Do you understand?”
“Matt, where is he?”
“In the lab.”
“Can you help me…” Lin Yu thought for a moment, but decided it was better for her to go herself. She hurriedly grabbed the edge of the bed. As she leaned forward, a dull pain throbbed in her abdomen, causing her to frown slightly and let out a low gasp, “Ah!”
Yun was very anxious, almost with a sobbing tone, “I told you not to rush. You just woke up and are still very weak.”
Lin Yu forced a smile and shook her head, “I’m fine.” Suddenly, her gaze fixed on Yun’s long legs. “Your legs?”
“Matt helped me install a simulated prosthetic…”
Lin Yu smiled brightly, raising her eyebrows, “That’s great! Congratulations.”
“Yeah.” Yun affectionately brushed Lin Yu’s hair away from her forehead. “What do you want to eat? Just tell me.”
Lin Yu looked up and gazed out the window at the seemingly darkening sky. She shook her head, “I’m not hungry. I don’t want to eat.”
Hearing this, Yun became unhappy; her expression darkened. “You still want to help Xiao Qiang? Without strength, how can you help?”
Mentioning Xiao Qiang made Lin Yu’s nose tingle, and tears involuntarily welled up in her eyes. She couldn’t help but start to sob softly…
Seeing her cry, Yun felt a wave of sadness wash over her, and tears began to fall as well. She thought of her sister Feng, unsure whether she was alive or dead.
“Alright, don’t be too sad,” Yun tried hard to suppress her own sorrow and comforted Lin Yu.
Lin Yu raised her tear-filled eyes and asked, “Sister Yun, how long did I sleep?”
“A month.”
“A month—15 days. He’s been in Area A5 for over a month, plus 15 days…” Lin Yu murmured absentmindedly. A glistening tear slowly overflowed from her eye and trickled down her cheek.
Yun gently wiped away the tears on her cheek. "Don't cry, you're a strong woman, you shouldn't be so fragile."
Lin Yu's eyes were misty as she gazed at Yun, questioning, "Who told you I'm a strong woman?"
Realizing she had let something slip, Yun hurriedly grabbed the blanket to cover her earlier mistake. "Just rest well, I'll go get you something to eat."
"No, Sister Yun, tell me, did Matt say something to you?" Lin Yu insisted on not letting her go, grabbing Yun's wrist and pressing on.
Under Lin Yu's intense gaze, Yun's cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she looked down and spoke in a voice barely above a whisper, "It was Matt, Matt told me."
As women often do, they reflected each other like a mirror. Seeing Yun display such rare shyness made Lin Yu's heart flutter. She couldn't help but chuckle, "You and Matt? You two are like that?" She gestured with her fingers to imply a pair of lovebirds, smiling at Yun.
"You’re so bad!"
"Am I really?" Lin Yu continued to tease Yun. Then, with a look of wistfulness, she stared blankly at the swaying shadows of the trees outside.
Noticing Lin Yu's mood drop again after just recovering, Yun felt a pang of sadness in her heart. She wanted to lift her spirits and wracked her brain for a little joke she had heard long ago.
"Lin Yu, let me tell you a conversation between a couple."
Lin Yu pulled her gaze back and nodded reluctantly. With Yun's help, she propped up her pillow high. Lying on her side with her chin resting on her hand, she listened quietly while her thoughts drifted far away to a place that held memories of Xiao Qiang...
Yun began: There was a couple who were idly chatting.
The girl asked her boyfriend, "Do you love me?"
The boyfriend embraced her and replied, "Of course."
The girl then said, "Okay, let me ask you this: if both I and your mother fell into the water, who would you save first?"
Without hesitation, the boyfriend countered with another question: "Do you love me?"
The woman said, "Of course I love."
Her boyfriend chuckled and replied, "If you love me, then don't ask such stupid questions."
The woman responded, "I don't love you."
His expression changed instantly. "If you don't love me, why should I save you?"
After Yun finished this line, she noticed that it didn't elicit a smile from Lin Yu, which made her feel quite defeated. A bit awkwardly, she stared at him, only to realize he was gazing at her with a focused look, his attention drawn to her eyes that were lost in the pitch-black night sky outside.
"Hey ladies, how's your day been?" A male voice suddenly broke the silence in the room.
Yun turned around to see Matt entering. He looked cheerful and full of energy, which suggested that the experiment must have gone well.
Lin Yu shot a cold glance at Matt; after all, he was the one who had sent Xiao Qiang away...
Unfazed by the icy reception, Matt maintained his usual thick-skinned demeanor and grinned widely. "What happened to the beautiful woman of the past? Why have you turned into a bitter wife?"
