Xiao Qiang had no intention of harming Matt; besides, hurting him would be detrimental to all three of them.
Matt was one of the future world's leaders of justice, and if anything happened to him, it would spell trouble for their future.
However, in situations where events unfolded too suddenly, there was no opportunity for explanation. Matt, unaware of the circumstances, instinctively sought to preserve his life; facing such formidable mutants, running was the only sensible choice.
Xiao Qiang aimed to catch the fleeing Matt and understand why both of them seemed tampered with. If his suspicions were correct, they had been drained of blood and lost some hair from their heads—likely after being anesthetized and having something taken from them while unconscious.
The ventilation shaft wasn't too big or too small. If Matt could fit through it, so could Xiao Qiang.
The chase in the corridor transformed into a pursuit within the winding ventilation ducts. One behind the other, both crawled through the thick pipes.
A series of drainage outlets, concentrated in one area, resembled the illegal operations of companies on the ground, harboring hidden discharge points. These outlets led directly to a lake, and Matt was well aware of this. He skillfully maneuvered into the drainage outlet and quickly reached the exit. Once he entered the lake, he would be safe.
Xiao Qiang felt lost; there was no sign of Matt at the end of the vent. It was impossible—he couldn't have just vanished into thin air, could he? Doubting himself, he looked down and pressed his finger against the bottom of the pipe. In the dim light, he examined his finger; there was no dust, indicating it had been cleaned off by someone. So where had Matt gone?
The dark drainage outlet emitted a strange odor that repulsed Xiao Qiang. However, aside from this place, Matt wouldn't go anywhere else. With no other choice, he pinched his nose and crouched down to slip into the drainage outlet.
At the exit, a vast expanse of blue lake water shimmered with natural ripples. The sunlight penetrated through the dense water surface, illuminating the lakebed.
A lithe figure swam effortlessly in the water, possessing gills like a fish and webbed toes reminiscent of a frog—he was carefree as he glided through the lake.
Under normal circumstances, one might think it was a swimming enthusiast enjoying the water. But at that moment, Xiao Qiang suddenly realized something: Matt was a mutant—was he a merman?
Without hesitation, Xiao Qiang pinched his nose and plunged into the lake.
