Walking in front of Lin Yu, Xiao Qiang swayed the energy-efficient Glow Stick, secretly smirking to himself, "What’s so fun about this place? Out in the wilderness, there might be monsters lurking around to eat you."
Wen Kai, prompted by his close friends, wore a mischievous smile. The fear he felt earlier had vanished, replaced by thoughts of a new plan to prank the oddball, Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang earned this nickname thanks to Wen Kai's handiwork. The story behind the name would be revealed later. For now, they were cautiously navigating the desolate wilderness, too anxious to think about anything else.
Wen Kai took a few steps forward and, regardless of Lin Yu's objections, placed a hand on her shoulder. He leaned in close, whispering something into her ear.
Lin Yu shrugged him off in disgust and hissed softly, "Cut it out. If you touch him again, I won't let you off easy."
Xiao Qiang didn’t turn around but knew that Wen Kai was up to no good again, likely plotting some scheme to tease him.
Behind them, Wu Yi and Li Hang couldn’t help but stifle their laughter as they watched their buddy Wen Kai attempt to communicate with Lin Yu about their grand plan to mess with the oddball Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang wasn’t focused on them; they had been walking for at least ten minutes! It struck him as odd that aside from their own chaotic footsteps, there seemed to be a lack of other sounds.
After thinking for a while, he remembered that there should be weeds around here! Where there are weeds, there should be crickets. Underneath the stratum, there were also crickets. The old man guarding the gate had told him many stories about the ground, including tales of crickets. Crickets are highly adaptable and can thrive wherever weeds grow.
Lin Yu pushed away Wen Kai's flirtatious gesture and stopped walking, seriously looking at Xiao Qiang who was crouched down rummaging through the weeds.
"What are you doing?"
Wen Kai picked his nose with a dismissive expression and said with a teasing tone, "He's digging for treasure."
"Haha..." The group burst into exaggerated laughter, causing Wen Kai's eyes to squint into slits from amusement.
"Don't you think something is missing here?" Xiao Qiang asked Lin Yu seriously, without any hint of anger.
Lin Yu frowned, not understanding what Xiao Qiang meant. "What? Don't waste time; just look at where we are." As he propped himself up, he casually glanced at his wristwatch—2:00 AM.
Xiao Qiang remained silent, shaking the Glow Stick again to shake off the mud and dew on his hands. He followed Lin Yu, their figures swaying as they moved, sometimes disappearing and sometimes casting abrupt shadows among the dark trees.
The first to hear the sound of water was Xiao Qiang. Before he could finish speaking, Wen Kai pushed past him and eagerly pulled Lin Yu forward a few steps, running down the steep slope...
In the center of the lake, flickering lights hung in a dark mass ahead. Lin Yu speculated that it must be the boat sent to pick them up.
"We should all shout towards the center of the lake together so that the people on the boat can hear us."
As the team leader, Lin Yu's words were not to be questioned. Except for Xiao Qiang, who remained vigilant and scanned their surroundings, the other four raised their hands in a trumpet shape and shouted towards the center of the lake, "Hey, we need a boat!"
Xiao Qiang silently watched the trembling boat approach the shore, his fingers unconsciously brushing against the Chain that peeked out from his collar. It was an unremarkable chain, rather coarse in texture and lacking any real value—something he had since infancy.
While waiting for the boat to arrive, Li Hang suddenly remarked, "Look at this desolate place; there isn't even a single person around. It feels like we're on another planet."
"Pfft, your imagination is really something..." Wen Kai smacked him on the head and cursed as they illuminated the water's surface with Lin Yu's Glow Stick. They saw ripples spreading across the dark water; the boat was nearing the shore. He quickly stopped talking and waved his Glow Stick at the approaching vessel.
The boat was shrouded in darkness, making it hard to see through. However, there was someone standing at its bow. As Wen Kai's Glow Stick slowly moved toward that person's face, they reacted strongly, quickly raising their right hand to shield their eyes from the blinding light. The other hand made simple gestures as if signaling something.
"Wow, does it have to be this mysterious?" Wu Yi clearly expressed dissatisfaction with this person's actions. He remembered how excited he had felt before their departure when he learned they would be going to an isolated island for training—an excitement that was beyond words. Yet unexpectedly, everything they had seen and experienced along the way had been so dull. They didn't even dare to speak much; those cold-faced personnel who came to pick them up were so enigmatic that every move they made felt strangely unsettling.
The hull was large, and under the darkness, it was impossible to see the overall structure of the ship with just a small glow stick. However, they seemed genuinely tired, lacking the energy to observe the condition of the vessel.
Once on board, they caught sight of the person waiting for them: a fleeting glance was enough to leave Xiao Qiang and the others astonished. This individual wore an eye patch, revealing only one eye with gray-brown irises.
It was hard to look for long, especially for those with disabilities. Regardless of how that eye had been lost, it must have been painful for them. Xiao Qiang quickly averted his gaze. As he turned his head, Lin Yu stepped forward with a polite smile and asked, “Hello, sir. Are you the contact for the island?”
Since they didn’t know this gentleman's name yet, they could only give him a symbolic title: Eye Patch Man.
Eye Patch Man had a stern demeanor, and his single eye glinted like a sharp blade as he shot a fierce glance at Lin Yu. He gestured… and suddenly, the five of them were in an uproar! He couldn’t speak?
“What the… turns out he’s mute?” Wen Kai blurted out to Lin Yu without any restraint. He had little respect for disabled people; whenever he saw one, he felt compelled to find some amusement at their expense. “Damn mute, got any food?” After saying this, he felt quite pleased with himself and burst into laughter… Just as his laughter echoed, he suddenly screamed, “Ah! Let go of me!”
Xiao Qiang and Lin Yu were about to say something when they were shocked to see Eye Patch Man had grabbed Wen Kai by the collar. That exposed eye seemed ready to shoot flames, causing Wen Kai’s face to change dramatically as he trembled all over.
Wu Yi and Li Hang were also bewildered by this sudden turn of events. They looked to their leader Lin Yu for help…
Lin Yu walked over step by step, opening his mouth as if to speak, but suddenly felt Eye Patch Man’s single eye turn toward him. The intensity of that gaze made him shudder; the words he intended to say got stuck in his throat, and in an instant, he forgot what he wanted to express. He stood there rigidly, caught between moving forward or retreating.
Wen Kai struggled desperately; his neck turned red as Eye Patch Man tightened his grip even more…
Wu Yi and Li Hang took steps back nervously, clearly at a loss for what to do.
