I let her leave first, knowing she was aware I had other intentions. She nodded and departed without asking further questions.
After she left, I instructed Li Zhisheng to keep an eye on the two big men downstairs to see if they followed Hu Fang. Meanwhile, I rummaged through the drawer in the room and found some paper and a pen provided by the hotel for guests. I wrote a few lines, tore off the written part, and rolled it into a paper ball about the size of my finger.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng, standing by the window, said to me, "As you expected, one of them followed Hu Fang out, while the other is still here."
"Good," I replied. "Now that we know they are tailing us, this makes things much easier. You should head out quickly."
I accompanied Li Zhisheng to the door and handed him the note I had just written. In a low voice, I said, "I have a pretty good idea of where they want Xinzhu to be. Keep this in mind; look at the note when you grab your bag. Leave everything else to me." With that, I gave his shoulder a light pat.
Li Zhisheng understood and nodded before turning to leave.
Once he was gone, I closed the door and pressed my ear against it, listening intently. Soon enough, I heard hurried footsteps approaching quickly from a distance.
After listening for a moment, I smiled to myself and thought, "Old Fox, I knew you wouldn't make it this easy. You openly arranged for two people to follow us to distract our attention while others are secretly watching us."
At this point, I had already deduced that Yang Master's people must have searched our rented house long ago. If they hadn't found anything, they wouldn't resort to this method of threatening me to hand over the Divine Anomalies Classic.
With these thoughts in mind, I walked over to the window and looked out. Seeing that both Li Zhisheng and the other guard at the entrance had left, I opened the door and went downstairs alone.
After leaving the hotel, I took a taxi straight to the pet hospital.
Before long, the taxi arrived near the pet hospital. Instead of having the driver stop directly at the hospital entrance, I asked him to pull over by a tea shop a few hundred meters away.
After paying for the ride, I entered the tea shop and chose a seat where I could see my rented vehicle while remaining relatively concealed.
After casually ordering some drinks, I closely monitored the car I had rented in the distance.
At that moment, the taxi carrying Li Zhisheng finally arrived. I thought to myself that he must have been taken for a ride by an unscrupulous driver, taking a long detour.
Soon after, a black sedan also stopped at the roadside not far from Li Zhisheng, but no one got out; it simply sat quietly waiting.
I watched as Li Zhisheng got out of the taxi and walked straight toward the SUV I had rented. Within two minutes of getting in, he emerged carrying my brown canvas bag and then hailed another taxi to leave. The black sedan nearby also started up and followed closely behind.
According to the plan, Li Zhisheng was now on his way to the bus station, while Hu Fang should be nearing the hotel by now.
"It seems everything is going smoothly; I should be leaving soon..." With that thought, I downed my drink in one go, stood up to pay, and prepared to leave.
Just then, a tow truck arrived and began towing away the SUV I had rented.
"What was I thinking... I should call the rental company," I muttered to myself.
However, since I hadn't brought my phone, I had no choice but to go inside and borrow one from the cashier. After dialing the number on the business card I received when renting the car, I explained the situation.
Once that was taken care of, I visited a few local bookstores and finally managed to purchase an old-looking book from one of them at a high price. The cover was worn and tattered, with even the title on the front barely legible.
Satisfied with my purchase, I exited the bookstore. It was already close to dusk, so I didn't linger any longer and took a taxi back to the hotel.
Upon arriving at the hotel entrance, I noticed the burly man who had followed Hu Fang earlier was back outside, standing at the door smoking a cigarette.
I ignored him and went straight upstairs to my room. As soon as I entered, I found Hu Fang pacing back and forth like an ant on a hot pan, her black leather backpack sitting on the bed.
"You finally came back! You ran out without a word, and I thought something happened to you..." Hu Fang said anxiously.
"I was just taking care of some business," I replied, handing her the book I had brought back from the bookstore.
Hu Fang took the book and flipped through a few pages, but as soon as she opened it, a cloud of dust fell from its old pages.
"What kind of book is this? What does it say on the cover?" Hu Fang asked, looking confused.
"It's just a book for us..." I said as I walked over to the bed, picked up her backpack, and dumped its contents onto the bed.
"Hey! Don't..." Hu Fang tried to stop me, but it was too late; a pile of her intimate clothing had already scattered across the bed.
"This..." I felt a bit flustered and instinctively wanted to help her pick it up.
But before I could move, Hu Fang hurriedly set down the ancient book in her hands and pushed me aside, intending to wrap those clothes tightly in the blanket on the bed.
At that moment, her face was flushed, and she slightly lowered her head as she handed me back the backpack.
I awkwardly accepted the backpack, murmuring a soft thank you before putting the ancient book inside. "There's something else I need your help with..."
"Um, you—" Hu Fang said, still looking down.
"You're carrying the bag, let's go out for dinner. It's on me," I said.
"Just like that?!" Hu Fang seemed a bit surprised.
"Yes, just like that." With that, I handed the bag to Hu Fang and let her carry it. Then we left the hotel, with the burly man at the door following us.
We ignored him and found a restaurant that looked more honest, run by a boss who seemed straightforward. We ordered some simple food to fill our stomachs.
After dinner, I took Hu Fang's backpack and approached the restaurant owner, asking him to keep an eye on it for me.
Since I was a bit uneasy, I intended to offer the boss some money during our conversation, but he firmly refused. "It's just a small favor; there's no need for payment. Just come back and patronize us again."
Seeing that the boss was indeed a genuine person eased my worries a bit. I planned to return later to thank him when I picked up the bag...
