After burying the Old Woman, Yao Long and I set off on our journey back. The Old Woman had entrusted a box to Yao Long before she passed away, and he carried it with him.
We traveled in silence, and upon returning to the city, we took a night flight back to our home. Throughout the journey, I felt an overwhelming sense of anxiety, wondering how Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang were doing, and whether the Death Apostle was safe.
In the middle of the night, we sat in a taxi heading to the suburbs. My phone was broken, so I had been unable to get any news about Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng. I turned to Yao Long and asked, "Yao Long, have you received any calls from Li Zhisheng or the others?"
Surprised, Yao Long replied, "I don't usually use my phone. I thought I mentioned that to you before..."
A chill ran down my spine as I realized that something might have happened to Li Zhisheng and the others. They might have tried to call me but found my phone unreachable, and I didn't have Yao Long's number either.
The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I felt. All I could do was silently pray that nothing had happened to them.
Before long, Yao Long and I arrived at the rental house in the suburbs, both filled with unease. As soon as I reached for the door handle, Hu Fang rushed over anxiously. "You’re finally back! Li Zhisheng is in trouble!"
"Good things never last..." I sighed inwardly and quickly reassured Hu Fang, "What happened? Take your time."
Hu Fang gathered his thoughts and explained, "So, remember when you were at that bug restaurant? You all discussed that the Death Apostle might be at that amusement park?"
"Yes, did you go there?"
"I went to the amusement park with Li Zhisheng the day after you left. At first, we didn’t find anything unusual, but later Li Zhisheng wanted to check out the underground area of the amusement park. That’s when things went wrong." Hu Fang's brow furrowed as his expression grew serious.
"What happened? Was Mr. Death there?" Yao Long asked eagerly.
Hu Fang waved his hand dismissively and clarified, "No, we didn’t find any trace of the Death Apostle or that Haoyang you mentioned. However, we fell into an ambush set by Yang Master. Li Zhisheng tried to protect me while escaping but ended up getting captured."
"What time is it?!" I asked anxiously.
"It’s been three days. I didn’t dare to go myself, but I couldn’t reach you. You have no idea how I’ve been these past few days..." Tears welled up in Hu Fang's eyes, whether from worry for Li Zhisheng or fear, I couldn't tell.
"It's my fault..." I comforted Hu Fang. "I didn't pay attention to my phone being broken; it's all my mistake. But now that the situation has happened, panicking won't help. For now, let's go see where Li Zhisheng was captured, and you can tell us the details on the way."
With that, Yao Long and I tossed our bags into the room, only keeping our weapons with us. Seeing this, Hu Fang wiped away her tears. "You just got back; shouldn’t you rest a bit? You must be exhausted..." Her words trailed off, and she seemed hesitant, worried about Li Zhisheng but also concerned for our well-being.
I replied, "There's no time to rest. Li Zhisheng is in Yang Master's hands, and with those beasts' methods, who knows what they might do to him? The sooner we find him, the less danger he’ll be in. Besides, it's already been three days; we should be very worried about his situation. Let’s go."
Without a moment's delay, the three of us turned and left the house. Once outside, we hailed a cab and headed straight for that damned amusement park.
In the car, Yao Long seemed to remember something. He turned to me and asked, "Shen Xu, after that big battle before, how's your mark holding up?"
Hearing his question reminded me that I had nearly exhausted all my power back in that village. "Looks like if there's a conflict this time, I'll have to rely on you," I said as I glanced at the mark on my arm that had spread again toward my shoulder.
Yao Long didn’t seem worried; instead, he appeared confident. "Don’t worry; I'm not the same as before. It’s just..." His tone shifted suddenly, and his expression darkened.
"Just what?"
"Just that I'm afraid they might use Li Zhisheng or Mr. Death as hostages..."
Yao Long's concern wasn’t unfounded; after all, Li Zhisheng was in their hands. Even if Death Apostle was safe now, they could still use Li Zhisheng as leverage.
"Your concerns are not without reason, but even if we know this might be a trap, we have to jump in. We can't just leave Li Zhisheng alone."
After hearing this, Yao Long nodded in agreement. Meanwhile, Hu Fang sat silently in his seat. "Hu Fang, can you tell me the details of your encounter? I need to have some background for Luggage."
Upon hearing this, Hu Fang looked at me and said, "Here's what happened: when Li Zhisheng and I went to the basement of the amusement park, we found that it had almost collapsed into ruins. We intended to go down into the wreckage to see if there were any clues, but as soon as we entered, we were discovered by Yang Master's people."
"They're very powerful; Li Zhisheng and I were no match for them. One of them told us that if we handed over the Nine Star Diagram, they would let us go. But Li Zhisheng didn't mention anything about the Nine Star Diagram, so I had no idea what it was. As a result, they planned to capture us. In a moment of desperation, Li Zhisheng fought back fiercely and told me to escape and inform you all. Then I waited here until you returned..."
Listening to him, I couldn't help but think, "It seems Yang Master's people already know that the Nine Star Life and Death Diagram they have is fake... But the whole situation is quite suspicious. If those people could withstand Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng's attacks, how could Li Zhisheng alone hold them off long enough for Hu Fang to escape?"
As this thought crossed my mind, a chill ran down my spine. Could it be that this Hu Fang beside me is also fake? Or were they deliberately letting Hu Fang go to inform me and Yao Long, leading us into a trap?
"What's wrong? Did you notice something off?" Hu Fang asked as he leaned closer to me when I fell silent...
