Hearing this, I noticed how vigilant Yao Long was, and I couldn't afford to let my guard down either. I quickly took the handgun he handed me and aimed it at the glowing green eyes in front of us.
"I just checked; there are only five bullets left in the gun, but there are at least a dozen wolves surrounding us. Stay sharp..."
At that moment, Yao Long was no longer using wooden arrows; instead, he had formed arrows from blood. He had already nocked an arrow, ready to fire at any moment. Meanwhile, I gripped the handgun with slightly trembling hands, keeping a wary eye on the creatures that resembled Evil Spirits.
Just as both sides were poised for action, a sharp wolf howl pierced the air, followed by the sound of chaotic footsteps around us. It seemed the pack had completely surrounded us, ready to attack at any moment.
"They're coming!" With Yao Long's shout, a flurry of footsteps rushed toward us. Then came two swift sounds of "whoosh," as Yao Long released his arrows, striking two wolves with crimson beams of light.
In the flickering red glow, I noticed that although the arrows hit their target, they did not strike vital points. Perhaps the wolf had already seen Yao Long's movement and managed to dodge.
Moreover, these two arrows did not stop the wolf's advance; it continued to charge toward us and soon reached Yao Long's side. Seeing this, Yao Long pushed me aside and launched a fierce kick that sent the wolf flying into the air. He then raised his bow again and shot two more arrows.
This time, the wolf had no chance to evade; Yao Long's arrows struck it squarely between the eyes, killing it instantly.
As one wolf fell, the surrounding pack did not retreat in fear but instead grew even angrier. In the darkness, they emitted low growls as if we were destined to become their next meal.
Then several more wolves sprang from the shadows, seemingly aware that Yao Long was not easy prey and turning their attention toward me. Just as I steadied myself and saw several pairs of green eyes closing in on me, I instinctively raised my gun and fired.
Due to the urgency of the situation and being inexperienced with firearms, my aim was off. The recoil caught me off guard, causing the handgun to fly out of my hand.
"Oh no!" I exclaimed in panic as I instinctively pulled out Jiang Ling from my backpack, preparing for a direct confrontation with the wolves.
At that moment, several red beams flashed past me and struck the wolves charging toward me. I heard their mournful howls as they collapsed to the ground.
"Thank—" I began to turn back to thank Yao Long but was stunned by what I saw: a hungry wolf had bitten down on his left arm, blood flowing freely from the wound.
At first, I was taken aback, but then I quickly turned around and ran towards Yao Long with my sword raised. Getting close, I aimed Jiang Ling at the wolf's head that was biting Yao Long and struck it with a swift blow.
In an instant, the wolf didn't even have time to howl before I sliced it cleanly in half. "This isn't going to work; there are more and more wolves. If we keep this up, we'll end up dead..." Yao Long grunted, forcing himself to remove the wolf's head stuck on his arm and angrily tossed it aside.
"But we're surrounded by wolves! How can we escape?!" I exclaimed anxiously, scanning our surroundings.
"No matter what, it's better than becoming wolf food. Let's fight!" Yao Long roared, suddenly unleashing a surge of blue flames. He then aimed in a specific direction and shot several arrows, creating an opening in the encircling pack of wolves.
"Now's our chance!" he said, grabbing my sleeve and pulling me towards the exit...
However, the gap we had opened was quickly blocked again by several wolves, forcing us to halt. Yao Long looked around frantically at the shrinking circle of wolves and stomped his foot in frustration. "Damn it, these beasts just won't quit!"
Hearing this, I furrowed my brow as I realized we were out of options. I flipped the Crimson Spirit Sword's blade towards my chest. "Looks like I'll have to use Void Spirit to deal with these pups..."
Just as I was about to stab myself with the sword's edge, gunshots rang out from the forest—bang bang bang! Several wolves around us yelped and fell dead.
At that moment, the sword was mere inches from my chest. Startled by the noise, I turned to Yao Long and asked, "What? Did you fire a gun?!". Immediately after asking, I felt foolish; he had given me his gun—where would he have one? The gunfire seemed to be coming from afar.
"No... look over there..." Yao Long said, retracting the power of Void Spirit and pointing towards a distant light.
I followed his finger and saw flickering lights from oil lamps in the forest... Then I noticed several figures emerging from that area, armed with old-fashioned long-barreled hunting rifles, firing several shots at the wolves surrounding us.
One by one, the wolves fell, and those remaining sensed danger and scattered into the woods.
At that moment, a man's voice called out from afar in a heavy dialect. Since we couldn't understand him, we could only respond: "We're not bad people; thank you for saving us!"
Upon hearing this, the group turned to us and spoke in accented Mandarin, "What are you doing here..." They approached me.
As they got closer, I realized they were five or six local residents dressed in cloth garments. After looking at our attire, one of them said, "You don't look like locals; you must be from out of town. What are you doing in this poor place?"
Their words carried a hint of suspicion, as if they mistook us for the smugglers we had encountered earlier. Seeing this, I hurriedly explained, "Please don't misunderstand. We're here for tourism; we just got lost in the mountains. We're grateful for your help."
One bearded man stepped forward and scrutinized us from head to toe. "You don't look like good people either. Who knows what you're really here for..."
He then turned to an older-looking man beside him and said, "Village Chief, these people might be involved in human trafficking. Don't trust them; the recent disappearances in the village could be related to them."
Hearing this, I quickly pulled out some money and shoved it into the bearded man's hand, saying, "You've really misunderstood. I have no idea about any trafficking; we genuinely came here to travel."
However, he did not take my money but merely shot me a glance and pointed at the bow on Yao Long's back. "If you really came for tourism, why are you carrying weapons for self-defense?!"
