I instinctively gasped, scrambling to my feet in a panic. Just then, a loud crash echoed as several chunks of debris flew past my face, slicing a long gash across my skin, blood streaming down from the wound.
But I had no time to tend to the injury; I hurriedly glanced towards Li Zhisheng and the Death Apostle. I saw Li Zhisheng standing in front of me, flailing his arms as if trying to block something. Meanwhile, the Death Apostle remained rooted in place, lost in thought.
"Could it be... that what I just saw was all an illusion?!" As I pondered this, I realized that I was no longer at the entrance of the mine but instead on an open ground several hundred meters away. The area was littered with numerous corpses, emanating a foul stench. Many of the bodies had long since decayed into skeletons due to years of wind and rain erosion.
"Li Zhisheng, what are you doing?!" I stepped forward and slapped him hard on the back, hoping to rouse him. With a loud smack, Li Zhisheng jolted awake, staring blankly for a moment before exclaiming, "W-What am I doing here?!"
He regained his composure and began to look around frantically. "It seems we got too close to that mine and fell into some kind of illusion. It looks like there's an invisible force driving us away, preventing us from getting closer. There must be something more to this place; look at the Death Apostle—he's still trapped in the illusion..." I pointed towards where the Death Apostle stood.
Li Zhisheng followed my finger and slowly crouched down, his eyes fixed intently ahead. Suddenly, dark energy began to coalesce in his hands, forming a pitch-black sphere.
"If we can't go over there, then let's bring him here..." He calculated the angle carefully and hurled the Black Sphere towards the Death Apostle.
Seeing this made me shiver; I thought to myself, "Since our last experience in the Cursed Realm, Li Zhisheng seems to have become much more decisive. Has he gained some insight from it?!"
As I contemplated this, the Black Sphere approached the Death Apostle and exploded with a loud bang at his feet. The force of the blast propelled the Death Apostle towards us.
However, because Li Zhisheng controlled the intensity of the attack, the Death Apostle was only knocked back about ten meters. Still, that impact was enough to bring him back to his senses.
Seeing Li Zhisheng collapse onto the ground, I worriedly asked, "Did you overexert yourself?"
Li Zhisheng shook his head. "Don't worry; I didn't hit him directly. He might just be regaining his senses now; his awareness is still unclear."
We hesitated to move forward for fear of falling back into that illusion again and instead stood our ground shouting out the Death Apostle's name...
After a moment, as the dust settled, the Death Apostle struggled to rise from the ground. Perhaps it was because he no longer had the Void Spirit protecting him; even though he hadn't been directly hit, he was still injured by the force of the explosion.
“Death Apostle, come here quickly!” I shouted anxiously at him. In the distance, the Death Apostle heard me, glanced our way, and probably sensed that something was wrong. He hurriedly limped towards us.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng beside me suddenly gathered another Black Sphere and threw it towards the Death Apostle. Seeing this, the Death Apostle was startled at first, then stopped in his tracks to dodge while shouting, “Li Zhisheng! What are you doing?!”
Li Zhisheng, seeing the Death Apostle stop, urged him anxiously, “Don’t stop! Keep running! It won’t hit you!”
The Death Apostle didn’t hesitate after hearing this because he knew that Li Zhisheng was also a clever Ming Ren; there must be a reason for his actions. So he continued on his path without changing direction.
Just as the Death Apostle had taken a few steps, the Black Sphere whizzed past him and exploded in the air behind him, releasing a cloud of black smoke. The Death Apostle was knocked down again by the force of the explosion.
I could no longer wait. Seeing that the Death Apostle was already some distance from the mine, I rushed towards him without a second thought and called for Li Zhisheng to follow.
I reached the Death Apostle and without hesitation threw him over my shoulder, then we ran back in the direction we came from. Along the way, Li Zhisheng continuously generated smaller Black Spheres in his hands to attack behind us, seemingly repelling the ghosts that had regained their strength. I dared not slack off either and quickened my pace, desperately sprinting forward.
At that moment, the Death Apostle suddenly said to me, “Thank you… thank you for saving me once again…”
I impatiently replied, “We’re all on the same side now; there’s no need for so many thanks. This is what we should do…”
As we spoke, we had already run back into the town from the mountainside path. At this time, the streets of the town were deserted, with sporadic streetlights flickering. I also felt that the street was filled with Yin Qi and Grievance just like at the entrance of the mine.
“Are… are there already ghosts all over the street?!” I gasped as I ran.
Behind me, Li Zhisheng said, “No, there are no ghosts on the street…” He looked back and continued, “And it seems that those ghosts disappear as soon as they reach the street; I can’t sense their presence at all now… It’s almost midnight; hurry up!”
Hearing Li Zhisheng’s anxious shout, I pushed myself to run even faster, ignoring whatever chilling Skull might be lurking around us…
In a moment, I found myself standing in front of the familiar grocery store. At that time, the store owner and Yao Long were anxiously waiting for us at the door.
Seeing me return with the Death Apostle on my back, Yao Long hurried over to support the Death Apostle and we rushed into the store together. In the blink of an eye, we were back inside. The owner quickly closed the door and posted a talisman on it. Just then, a series of bell sounds echoed in the room—“Dong~ Dong~ Dong…” The large clock in the corner struck twelve times.
I handed the Death Apostle over to Yao Long and stood still, my hands resting on my knees as I gasped for breath. The grocery store owner looked at us and said, “It’s a good thing you returned in time; otherwise, if you had been even a little later, something might have happened…”
However, just as the owner finished speaking, I felt my vision starting to blur, whether from breathing heavily or some other reason.
Next, my consciousness began to fade, slipping into a state where I was almost asleep. “I… what’s happening to me…” I managed to say halfway before my throat felt like it was blocked by something, rendering me unable to make any sound.
At that moment, I realized with a sinking feeling that the damned illness was about to flare up again!
Thinking this, I used the last remnants of my normal awareness to glance at Li Zhisheng, only to find that he too was showing signs of distress. In the dim light, I saw his expression blank, with not a hint of life in his eyes…
