Upon hearing that, I instinctively turned to look back. Just then, I heard a "whoosh," and a red light flashed past my cheek. Immediately after, there was a loud "bang," as if something had struck the wall behind me.
"There's nothing there! Shen Xu, get out of the way!" Yao Long shouted anxiously, holding the Azure Spirit.
Hearing this, I didn't care about what was behind me anymore. I hurriedly leaped forward and rolled on the ground, quickly retreating to the corner of the opposite wall.
Once I steadied myself, I focused my mind. Now I could see clearly that in the spot where I had just been standing, a pitch-black shadow loomed, emanating a massive amount of Yin Qi and Grievance that instilled a strong sense of fear.
"What exactly are you?" I demanded, noticing that the previously noisy Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng had suddenly fallen silent.
The shadow did not intend to respond to my question; it merely took two steps forward. At that moment, it stood directly under the bright moonlight, which seemed to be absorbed by it, leaving the figure still shrouded in darkness.
"Who cares what it is? Just kill it!" Yao Long suddenly exclaimed fiercely. He quickly drew several arrows from his backpack and nocked them onto his bow, infusing his blood into the wooden shafts before releasing them.
The arrows shot forth like slender dragons, tracing crimson lines through the air. "These are physical arrows infused with blood; they should be able to hurt you!" I thought as I watched the shadow make no attempt to dodge. The arrows passed right through it and struck the wall behind, creating multiple holes.
Seeing the attack ineffective, Yao Long was left stunned. "What on earth is this thing? It doesn't seem to be harmed at all!"
I didn't answer Yao Long but kept my gaze fixed on the sudden appearance of the shadow. My hands gripped Jiang Ling tightly as beads of sweat rolled down my forehead. My mind raced to think of a way to deal with this situation.
"Trying to escape now would surely lead to death. But staying in this room without knowing what this shadow is or whether it will harm us…"
Just then, it seemed that Yao Long's two attacks had provoked the shadow. It stepped back a few paces, leaving the moonlight's reach and vanishing into darkness.
At that moment, Yao Long shouted in alarm and suddenly sidestepped, jumping away from his position. The shadow now stood where he had just been.
Seeing this, Hu Fang and I quickly retreated as well. "Whoosh—whoosh!" Two crimson beams once again sliced through the darkness toward the shadow. It turned out that Yao Long had fired two more arrows before he could even steady himself.
But this strike was no different from the previous two; it still passed straight through the shadow and hit the wall. "Don't waste your effort; it seems like this thing can't be hit at all!" I said to Yao Long.
Before Yao Long could respond, the shadow slipped back into the darkness, disappearing before us. "Where did it go?!" I anxiously looked around. Suddenly, I felt a chill on my back, as if some invisible force had seeped into my body, and then I felt my soul being grasped and pulled outward.
A shiver ran through me, and I thought to myself that this was bad. My vision began to blur, and I felt my consciousness gradually being stripped away. In a moment of desperation, I grabbed Jiang Ling in my hand, flipped the blade, and plunged it into my chest. A sharp pain instantly spread throughout my body, but the feeling of my consciousness being pulled away disappeared.
"Are you done yet?! You've called me out twice in such a short time..." The Void Spirit within me sounded somewhat impatient. Just as it was about to complain, it sensed the thing grasping my soul. "Quick! Channel your power into the sword and use my strength to strike!" The Void Spirit urged me anxiously.
Upon hearing this, I didn't dare delay. While time had not yet resumed, I hurriedly channeled my power into Jiang Ling and then turned around to slash at the shadow's arm that had reached into me.
"It seems that this Demonic Mark needs to be attacked with the power of the Void Spirit; no wonder Yao Long's blood attack was ineffective." As I thought this, time resumed, and when the shadow saw its arm severed, it staggered back a few steps before merging back into the darkness.
"Yao Long, Hu Fang, come over quickly; don't stay too far from me!" I pulled Hu Fang close to me while Yao Long, seeing that I had injured the shadow from a distance, asked, "Shen Xu, how did you hurt it?!"
"The power of the Void Spirit; you have to use the power of the Void Spirit..." Upon hearing me mention the Void Spirit's power, Hu Fang said, "Sheng Xu, do you mean that I also have a Void Spirit? How do I use it? Teach me quickly; I want to help!"
Hearing Hu Fang's question put me in a difficult position because I had awakened the Void Spirit through self-harm. There was no way I could let her do that too. Moreover, since her connection with the Void Spirit was unclear, I didn't want her to attempt it now.
As I contemplated this, Yao Long unexpectedly interjected, "Anger can awaken the Void Spirit..."
Hu Fang responded eagerly upon hearing this and immediately I sensed something stirring within her. "Don't teach her recklessly! Anger could trigger 'Hatred'! Who will stop her then?" I scolded Yao Long.
Realizing he had misspoken, Yao Long hurriedly said, "It's all my fault for speaking out of turn; Hu Fang, don't listen to me..."
But it was too late. I could already feel a tremendous force surging from within Hu Fang, a power that even rivaled Li Zhisheng's Soul Burial when it went berserk.
At that moment, I sensed another wave of Grievance nearby, but I couldn't see where it was coming from.
I panicked and hurriedly shook Hu Fang's shoulder. "Hu Fang, don't use Void Spirit yet! Your Void Spirit is unstable right now!"
"Oh? Is that so?" Suddenly, a different woman's voice came from Hu Fang's mouth. The voice sounded somewhat aged, and she spoke to me with disdain, "What do you know, you half-baked fool?!"
With that, Hu Fang suddenly raised her hand and shook off my grip from her shoulder. I stumbled back a few steps, nearly falling over. Steadying myself, I called out to Hu Fang, "Hu Fang, wake up! Don't let the Void Spirit consume your mind!"
As soon as I finished speaking, a shadow suddenly appeared behind Hu Fang. It moved with incredible speed, thrusting its hand into her back and then forcefully pulling something out from within her.
The shadow's hand disappeared into the darkness with whatever it had extracted from Hu Fang. The whole sequence of events happened too quickly for me and You Long to react; by the time we realized what was happening, the shadow was already gone.
Looking back at Hu Fang, she stood there swaying slightly before suddenly leaning to the side and collapsing to the ground with a thud...
