As I thought about this, I couldn't help but feel a chill run down my spine. "Could it be that his purpose for coming here was to tell me that the real killer is someone else, and that this person might be hiding right beside me? But why wouldn't he just tell me directly? Why use such an obscure way to hint at it? Is there something more going on here?"
Suddenly, I shot up from the sofa, thinking, "If Death Apostle isn't lying to me, then the person hiding among us is likely one of those five, and right now, I'm the only one who knows..."
"Regardless of whether it's true or not, I need to get back quickly. If something happens, it will be too late to regret." With that thought, I immediately called Hu Fang.
"Hello? Is this Hu Fang?"
On the other end of the line, Hu Fang replied, "Yes, it's me. What's going on? You sound really anxious."
I said, "Listen to me, there might be danger where you are. Keep everyone in the hospital; no one can leave. I'll rush over as soon as I can!"
Before Hu Fang could respond, I hurriedly hung up the phone and booked a flight for two hours later, then rushed to the airport.
After a hectic journey, I finally arrived at the hospital five hours later; it was already evening.
I quickly walked to the ward and pushed the door open. Inside, I saw Meng Zhuang and Hu Fang sitting by Li Zhisheng's bed, looking at me with surprised expressions.
Death Apostle and Yao Long were already asleep, while Li Zhisheng was whispering something to Hu Fang. When he noticed me standing at the door, he stopped and turned to look.
I glanced around the room. The walls were pristine white, with three beds neatly arranged along one side. Only Yao Long's bedside had a rather nice nightstand.
A gentle breeze wafted in through the window, causing the sheer white curtains to flutter gracefully in the air. The pot of white tulips on the windowsill looked incredibly vibrant in the glow of the setting sun.
"It doesn't seem like there's any danger here. Could it be that Gu Kai is lying to me? Or is his warning not about now, but about what’s to come?"
Hu Fang saw my bewildered expression and glanced at the sleeping Yao Long and Death Apostle beside us. He walked over and pulled me outside, asking, "What’s going on? Did you find some clues again?"
I replied, confused, "It's not that I found any clues; this time, the clues came to me... This morning, Gu Kai came to see me."
"Gu Kai? Is he the one you mentioned before, the one who wanted to kill Li Zhisheng?"
I furrowed my brow and murmured, "That's him for sure, but the one who wants to harm Li Zhisheng... might be someone else."
At that moment, Meng Zhuang also came out. "Shen, what happened? Why are we supposed to stay in the hospital and not go out?"
"It's hard to explain in just a few words. In short, I've received some news: someone among us might be in danger. I don’t know who that person is or who wants to harm them..." I said as I sat down on a bench in the corridor, lost in thought.
Upon hearing that there was danger, Meng Zhuang quickly asked, "In danger? Is it serious? Could someone die?" He seemed quite anxious.
I turned my head and looked at him seriously. "Yes! You all need to stay together; no one can leave. Otherwise, I don’t know what might happen..."
After hearing this, Meng Zhuang's sturdy body trembled slightly as he retreated back into the ward.
Hu Fang asked, "So what do you plan to do now?"
"I don’t know because I have no idea how the 'enemy' will attack us or even who this 'enemy' is. We’re like lambs waiting to be slaughtered, completely unaware of when our time will come..."
As I spoke, I clenched my fists tightly, feeling increasingly anxious.
Hu Fang placed a hand on my shoulder. "It's okay; no matter what happens, I'll be by your side."
After listening, I looked up at her and forced a smile. "Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to you. You should go back and take care of them. I'll figure something out."
Hu Fang saw my determination and didn't say much more. She just lightly patted me twice before turning and heading back inside.
I sat alone in the corridor, closing my eyes in deep thought, trying to connect all the known clues: Box, the photographs, the eighteen murdered individuals, and Gu Kai's words to me.
At that moment, two nurses pushed a cart past me, chatting as they walked. "It's strange today; how could two patients suddenly die? It's as if they had an appointment, both at the same time..."
Another nurse quickly interrupted her. "Don't be ridiculous; there's no appointment. It's probably just a coincidence."
Hearing this, I suddenly jolted upright from my chair and grabbed one of the nurses. "Excuse me, can you tell me where those two patients are?"
The nurse was startled by my sudden action and looked at me with wide eyes. "Wha... what? Are you a relative of the deceased?"
Realizing I had overstepped, I quickly released her and replied, "Ah, yes, yes! Could you please tell me which room the deceased were in?"
The two nurses hesitated upon hearing my request. They exchanged glances before one said, "If you're a relative, you wouldn't be asking this. They died this morning and have already been taken to the Morgue."
"Actually, someone told me he left something for me in his room. I want to retrieve it. Could you help me..." I pleaded.
One of the nurses thought for a moment. "There are two deceased patients: one is surnamed Chen and the other is surnamed Qian. Which one is your relative?"
I thought to myself that as long as I knew their surnames, it would be easier to proceed. So I casually replied, "He is surnamed Chen."
Upon hearing this, the nurse pointed behind her. "The second room at the end of the corridor is his."
"Such a strange person, not caring about the death of their family but instead concerned about what they left behind..."
"Probably fighting over the inheritance..." they whispered as they walked away.
I didn't have time to worry about what they thought and headed straight for the second room at the end of the corridor.
Through the viewing window on the door, I saw that this hospital room seemed to have just been vacated and was not yet assigned to anyone, so I pushed the door open and walked in.
Standing inside, I looked around and found that this room was also a single setup but had three beds added. The balcony window was half-open, seemingly for ventilation.
After searching the room thoroughly, I stared at the empty space with no clues and muttered to myself, "Could it be that I was mistaken? Is this just a coincidence?"
"No, there's still one more room. I have to check it out..." With that thought, I approached the front desk and asked, "Hello, could you tell me if a patient with the surname Qian passed away this morning?"
The receptionist put down her work. "Yes, that's correct, but he is no longer here."
"I'm not looking for him; someone asked me to retrieve something. I want to see if it's still in the room."
"Oh, I see. His room is the first one at the end of the corridor; you’ll see it as you go down..." After finishing her sentence, the nurse seemed to suddenly remember something and continued, "By the way, are you Shen Xu?"
Hearing my name caught me off guard. "Yes, I'm Shen Xu. Why?!"
Upon hearing this, she took an envelope from the cabinet and handed it to me. "Someone asked me to give this to you."
I was stunned as I took the envelope. "Who asked you to give this to me?!" I pressed for answers.
She thought for a moment and said, "This is from yesterday. Another nurse asked me to give this to you. She will have someone named Shen Xu come by today to inquire about the ward, and she told me to hand this over to you."
"Can you find that nurse again?"
She shook her head and replied, "That might be a bit difficult. We've recently hired a batch of new nurses at our hospital. I only remember that she has a beauty mark at the corner of her right eye; I don't recall anything else."
After pondering for a while, I thanked the nurse and turned back to the bench in the corridor.
With a feeling of unease, I opened the envelope, and a photograph slipped out. I quickly reached out to catch it. Upon closer inspection, it was identical to the previous photo of the Box. I hurriedly flipped it over, and sure enough, there were words written on the back: To Obtain the Box, First Break the Tomb, Then Unseal the Mark.
After reading it, I carefully put the photo away. Seeing that there was nothing else in the envelope, I tore it into pieces and tossed it into the nearby trash can before getting up and walking toward the room at the end of the corridor.
Standing at the door, I noticed that this ward was still empty, so I pushed the door open and entered.
This room was almost identical to the previous one, with three beds as well. However, there was a wooden cane placed at the head of one of the beds.
I walked over to pick it up; it felt very familiar. The exquisite dragon pattern on the cane showcased the craftsmanship of its maker.
"Wait... isn't this the cane of the Death Apostle?! How did it end up here? Wasn't it supposed to be at my house?" In my surprise, I examined it closely and noticed something odd. "The Death Apostle's cane is somewhat damaged, but this one is intact, as if it had just been made."
Thinking about this made me realize that what I was about to face was no longer as simple as Vengeful Spirits and Evil Ghosts; I might be confronting a large organization that was closely monitoring my every move.
"Could this be what Gu Kai wanted to warn me about?" I muttered to myself.
At that moment, Hu Fang suddenly appeared at the door. She frowned and gasped for breath. "I've been looking for you! What are you doing here?"
"I found something..." I shook the cane I was holding a few times, signaling her.
"What's wrong? Is there something going on?"
"Death Apostle... something happened..." As soon as Hu Fang finished speaking, a commotion erupted outside.
"What?!" I exclaimed, rushing out of the hospital room. I saw two doctors pushing a cart filled with emergency equipment, hurrying towards Li Zhisheng's room.
"What on earth is happening..." I asked Hu Fang anxiously while running.
Hu Fang replied without context, "I don't know what's going on either. Death Apostle suddenly woke up, struggled for a moment, and then fainted!"
