As I watched the white-clad ghost lunging toward me, I felt an overwhelming sense of sorrow and despair emanating from her eyes. In that moment, a flicker of compassion arose within me, but the mark on my arm began to throb painfully, as if warning me that time was running out...
Just as the ghost's fingertips were about to touch me, I steadied myself and swung my sword from right to left. A dark Slash Mark shot forth, cleaving the ghost in half.
She paused for a moment, and then to my surprise, a look of relief spread across her face as she said, "Thank you..." With that, she turned to ash and scattered into the air.
At that moment, my marked arm throbbed sharply. "It seems I can't hold on much longer..." I closed my eyes to steady my mind and withdrew the power of the Void Spirit.
But just as I pulled back the power, a troubling thought struck me: "What will I do without my strength to return?! Do I have to use it again?" I muttered to myself, looking up at the sky.
I noticed leaves that had been swept up were now falling back down to the ground. "Has the wind stopped?" I thought, putting Jiang Ling back into my bag and preparing to head back.
Just as I was about to move, I discovered several vines had emerged from the ground, tightly wrapping around my feet and rendering me immobile.
Seeing this, I quickly pulled Jiang Ling out of my backpack again and aimed it at the vines below. To my dismay, when the blade met the vines, it merely left a shallow white mark before bouncing back, numbing my hands.
Frustrated, I swung my sword repeatedly for dozens of strikes until blood began to seep from my palms before finally stopping.
Breathing heavily, I glared at the vines ensnaring my feet and cursed under my breath, "Damn it, how can these plants be harder than stone..."
Just when I felt helpless, the ground began to shake violently, and the vines tightened their grip around me.
"What... what's happening?!" I exclaimed as I struggled to maintain my balance.
At that moment, the large tree I had just severed began to rise from the ground along with the tremors.
I thought to myself, "Is this what Yao Long meant by pestilence?" Realizing that without using the power of the Void Spirit, I was facing certain death. I raised Jiang Ling once more, intending to unleash the Void Spirit's power again...
Just as the tip of my sword grazed my skin, I noticed several red dots flickering in the distance. In that instant of distraction, two Blood Arrows flew toward me and severed the vines binding my feet.
As the restraints on my feet vanished, I noticed the massive tree before me continuing to grow. Realizing the danger, I turned and ran, wanting to put as much distance between myself and that tree as possible.
After sprinting a few hundred meters, I stopped and looked back, only to see the Death Apostle rushing toward me, with Li Zhisheng limping behind due to an injury on his foot. Upon noticing that I had spotted him, the Death Apostle waved his hand at me.
At that moment, the ground around the tree suddenly bulged, as if something even larger than the tree was trying to emerge from beneath.
"Don't come over here!" I shouted repeatedly at the Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng...
But it was too late. The hidden entity beneath the ground suddenly surged upward, sending dirt flying three or four meters into the air. The Death Apostle was caught off guard by the rising soil and was thrown backward.
Li Zhisheng, running slower, managed to avoid being affected but was still startled by the scene and quickly halted in his tracks.
"What is that..." I stood frozen, staring at the thing that had emerged from the ground...
A gigantic brown Cylinder loomed nearby, with a massive eye in its center tightly shut, resembling the one that had sprouted from the Death Apostle earlier.
The rest of the Cylinder was covered in numerous circular holes, resembling a beehive.
The Cylinder stood silently, motionless, as if waiting for something...
I felt lost as I gazed at it, thinking, "No matter what this thing is, I should first regroup with Li Zhisheng and the Death Apostle..." With that thought in mind, I kept a wary eye on the Cylinder and ran toward them.
I found the Death Apostle brushing off dirt from his clothes. When he saw me approach, he asked in confusion, "Is this what Yao Long's curse looks like?" I shook my head. "I can't be sure... but whatever it is, it's definitely not friendly..."
"In that case, there's nothing good about it..." The Death Apostle said as he spread his arms wide and released a torrent of Soul Threads. The threads surged toward the Cylinder like a tidal wave.
Meanwhile, Li Zhisheng had leaped into the air, gathering a Black Sphere in his hands and hurling it at the Cylinder.
Just as the Black Sphere and Soul Threads were about to collide with the Cylinder, that enormous eye suddenly opened...
I focused my gaze, realizing that what appeared to be barbs were actually countless normal-sized eyeballs scattered throughout, all of which were unerringly fixed on our position.
"Look over there!" Li Zhisheng shouted at us from the air.
As his voice rang out, tens of thousands of Vengeful Spirits surged forth from the holes surrounding the Cylinder, positioning themselves in front of it to form a massive protective shield.
The Black Sphere emitted by Li Zhisheng collided with the Vengeful Spirits, resulting in a thunderous boom that sent a cloud of black mist swirling into the air.
Beside us, the Death Apostle seemed to sense something. A slight smile crept onto his lips as he said, "Leave this Demonic Mark to me!"
No sooner had he spoken than his body trembled, and Soul Threads erupted from him once more, this time in even greater numbers.
I began to piece things together. "These Vengeful Spirits aren't created by the Cursed Realm; they're real souls, aren't they?"
"Exactly!" the Death Apostle replied, extending a hand and wrapping the Soul Threads around his palm until they formed a fist larger than the Cylinder itself.
He prepared to swing his fist back slightly while leaning his body forward. Then, with a roar, he unleashed that enormous fist toward the Cylinder.
The fist tore through the air like a hurricane, crashing down upon the massive Cylinder. I couldn't help but think, "Even with the power of Void Spirit, I might struggle to withstand this punch..."
Just then, Li Zhisheng shouted urgently, "Death Apostle, stop! That thing will devour souls!"
Upon hearing this, the Death Apostle's expression changed dramatically. But at that moment, there was no stopping him. With a resounding "bang," his punch struck with such force that nearby trees were uprooted and sent flying.
"What are you doing? Quickly retract your Soul Threads!" Li Zhisheng yelled as he descended from the air, anxiously confronting the Death Apostle.
At that moment, the Death Apostle stood frozen, staring blankly at the Cylinder enveloped in smoke and dust. "Hey! What's wrong with you?!" I shook him, but he remained unresponsive.
"I'll handle this!" Li Zhisheng grabbed my shoulder with one hand and pushed me aside. Then he suddenly exerted force and delivered a powerful kick right to the Death Apostle's abdomen, sending him flying over ten meters until he crashed into a tree and finally came to a stop.
He collapsed under the tree, coughing repeatedly, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. I hurried over with Li Zhisheng to check on him.
"What happened?!" I crouched beside the Death Apostle, urgently asking Li Zhisheng.
Li Zhisheng replied, "The Black Sphere I just unleashed didn't directly hit the Demonic Mark. Instead, it exploded upon contact with the spirits, and from that explosion, I realized those spirits actually decomposed and absorbed my power."
As soon as he finished speaking, a series of wails from Vengeful Spirits echoed through the air. The sound was deafening and chilling, causing even the surrounding leaves to tremble and rustle violently.
I quickly covered my ears and shouted to Li Zhisheng, "We shouldn't stay here any longer; we need to go back!"
But the wailing was so loud that it completely drowned out my voice. Li Zhisheng didn’t hear me at all and continued shaking the Death Apostle, trying to wake him up.
Seeing that words were useless, I bent down and lifted the Death Apostle onto my back, pulling Li Zhisheng along as we ran back.
However, after only a few steps, a wall made of Evil Spirits appeared before us. These Evil Spirits were covered in mouths that resembled eyes, constantly opening and closing as if they had spotted some delicious food.
I stopped in my tracks, thinking, "These things can absorb Soul Eater's essence and power; there's no way we can counter them with Void Spirit's power. Without Void Spirit, we can't harm them at all. What should we do?"
Just as Li Zhisheng and I were anxiously stomping our feet, a flash of red light suddenly illuminated the sky. I looked up to see arrows formed from coagulated blood raining down like a storm, instantly annihilating the Evil Spirits blocking our path.
"This Yao Long is truly impressive; no wonder he managed to escape from Gu Kai..." I muttered to myself, not daring to slow down as I rushed toward the elevator.
There stood Yao Long outside the elevator, panting heavily as if that last attack had drained too much of his blood.
Upon seeing us return, he raised his bow and arrow. "Whoosh—whoosh—" Two arrows flew past me, taking down several Evil Spirits that had followed behind.
I rushed over to Yao Long and shouted, "Stop attacking! If you keep this up, you'll die!"
Since we were a bit farther from those Evil Spirits now, the wailing was not as overwhelming, allowing us to hear each other’s voices more clearly.
Yao Long listened, a weary expression crossing his face. He forced a smile and said, "If I don't do this, you will die..."
I didn't want to argue with him. While carrying the unconscious Death Apostle on my back, I helped Yao Long, who was sitting outside the elevator, and placed both of them inside.
I instructed Yao Long, "Take care of Death Apostle. The rest is up to me and Li Zhisheng!"
After I finished speaking, Li Zhisheng reached out his hand toward Yao Long, saying, "Yao Long, can I borrow your weapon for a moment..."
Yao Long glanced at the Azure Spirit in his hand and replied, "You need to be careful; don't overuse it..." With that, he handed the bow over to Li Zhisheng.
Li Zhisheng took the Azure Spirit and thanked Yao Long before turning to me and asking, "Shen Xu, how can we infuse a soul into a weapon..."
