Li Zhisheng widened his eyes, turning his head in shock to look at me. "You killed so many people?!" I stared blankly at the television screen, my mind struggling to recall everything that had happened earlier.
Throughout the entire battle with the Demon Sorcerer, I had remained fully conscious and did not feel any gaps in my memory. It was impossible for me to lose control, especially since I had the Void Spirit with me; there was no way I could have been possessed...
I looked utterly confused. "I don't know what this is all about..."
"You need to think carefully. The incident has already been reported, and the police will definitely come to investigate. Once they check the surveillance footage, they'll know we were there. And during the fight, you were emitting Black Light and red light; it would be hard not to trace you," Li Zhisheng said, appearing anxious.
I raised my hand in a stopping gesture, signaling Li Zhisheng to hold on while I tapped my head with my other hand, searching my mind for any possible explanations.
"One thing is certain: I definitely did not kill anyone. At most, there could only be two bodies that were known to exist at that time—one being the Red-Clad Woman and the other the Demon Sorcerer. But I saw the Demon Sorcerer blown to pieces... So the only possible body left is that of the Red-Clad Woman..."
"Where did those eighteen bodies mentioned in the report come from? Could someone be framing me?!" As this thought crossed my mind, I slapped my forehead and quickly asked Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang, "Did anyone enter or leave the village while you were in the car?!"
They both shook their heads vigorously as if they were bobbleheads. I looked out the window and muttered to myself, "So someone must have entered the village after we left, planted these bodies, and then tried to frame me. But what benefit would that bring them...?"
At that moment, Li Zhisheng interjected, "If that's true, we need to act quickly. Otherwise, when the police come knocking, we'll really have no way to defend ourselves..."
Hu Fang pondered for a moment and suggested, "How about we go back to the scene? We might find some clues."
Li Zhisheng slapped Hu Fang on the head. "Are you stupid? It's already on TV; the police must have sealed off the scene by now. If we go there now, it's like walking into a trap!"
Hu Fang shot back at Li Zhisheng, "You're the one who's stupid! Think about it—if they had already traced us, they would have come to arrest us by now. This means they haven't found us yet..."
After hearing this, I pointed at Hu Fang and contemplated her words. "That's a good point. Hu Fang, after knowing you for so long, this is your smartest idea yet..."
Hu Fang beamed at my compliment. "Of course! When we go there, we can just tell the police we're from this village..."
I gave a wry smile. "This is your smartest idea yet—and also your last one... We can go, but we absolutely cannot let them know we've been there. Just as I said earlier: if someone is deliberately trying to frame me and they find out I've been at the scene, even if there's insufficient evidence of murder, they could still charge me with deliberately tampering with a crime scene."
Li Zhisheng nodded in agreement after listening, "That's true. So even if we go, we can't leave any evidence..."
Let's do it, I hurried downstairs to drive the car back to the company, then switched to another vehicle and headed home. As soon as I got back, Hu Fang asked, "Why did you rush out like that?"
Li Zhisheng replied, "If I'm not mistaken, did you go to switch the car you drove here earlier?" I gave him a thumbs up and said, "Impressive, you guessed it! Now can you guess what I'm going to do next?"
This left Li Zhisheng momentarily speechless. After thinking for a moment, he said, "Uh... did you forget something and come back to get it?"
"Wrong! I need to use the bathroom..." With that, I dashed into the restroom. After taking care of my urgent need, I came out and told Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang, "This time, I'll go alone. It's easier for me to handle things by myself. You two just keep an eye on the house..."
Li Zhisheng looked at me and said, "You're mistaken. If you're discovered, having someone else there could help buy you some time. If you're caught alone, it's really over for you. I'm going with you..." He stood up from the sofa and walked straight into his room.
Hu Fang was a bit unhappy upon hearing this and muttered, "It was my idea in the first place; why am I being left out at the end?" I comforted her, saying, "It's just that having too many people makes things complicated. I had no choice but to leave you behind. Besides, if something goes wrong, you'll be here as my backup. I'll be counting on you to help us out."
After hearing this, she reluctantly agreed. A moment later, Li Zhisheng emerged from his room dressed in all black. He looked at me and said, "Shen Xu, you should change into something else too; that white outfit is way too conspicuous."
I glanced down at my clothes and realized he was right, so I went back to my room and changed into a black leather jacket.
Afterward, Li Zhisheng and I headed downstairs together and drove a brown SUV straight to Gui Tian Village. On the way there, Li Zhisheng sat in the passenger seat with a serious expression and asked me, "Do you think this might not be the work of the Death Apostle?"
"It’s possible," I replied. "But he clearly told me that his goal is the Soul Sealing Talisman. With this situation unfolding now, I don't see how it benefits him at all. Unless he has found someone with abilities similar to mine. Even so, the Box is with me along with everything else. Even if someone else has the Nine Lives Star Map and can break Onizuka's defenses, they still wouldn't be able to find the Soul Sealing Talisman without me." I stated firmly.
Li Zhisheng said, "You're definitely right about that. But I really can't think of anyone else who could pull this off. The Death Apostle is incredibly powerful and seems to have quite a few extraordinary individuals around him. If there were another person involved, he wouldn't be completely unaware..."
"There’s only one possibility: this person is even more powerful than the Death Apostle and even more terrifying..." As I spoke, I handed my Cigarette Case to Li Zhisheng since I had only recently started smoking and wasn't very skilled at it yet while driving; I needed him to light one for me.
Li Zhisheng reluctantly took the Cigarette Case from me. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it with the lighter from the case. He clearly didn’t know how to smoke; after taking a deep drag, he coughed violently and complained while handing the cigarette back to me, "Why on earth did you decide to learn how to smoke?"
I took a deep drag from the cigarette and exhaled a cloud of smoke. "You remember when I went on that business trip alone before?" Li Zhisheng nodded. "It was because of an old friend's betrayal at that time; coincidentally, the person who went with me smoked too. He offered me one, so I thought I'd give it a try and ended up getting hooked for no reason."
I glanced at the time on the dashboard; it was only noon. "Is it too early to go now?" I asked. He thought for a moment and replied, "Well, Baymax is too easy to spot. Even if we rush there, it would only be around four in the afternoon. Seeing how hurriedly you left, I thought you were planning to go without purpose... Since that's the case, I noticed you haven't eaten anything yet. How about we grab a bite first?"
After hearing this, I nodded in agreement and found a place to eat. Once we finished, we sat and chatted for a while, and before long, it was already afternoon.
"That's enough; let's go. It won't be good if we get there too late," he said. I got back into the car with Li Zhisheng, and we continued our drive to Gui Tian Village.
Two hours later, we arrived near Gui Tian Village. This time, instead of parking right at the village entrance, we found a relatively concealed spot to stop the car.
As dusk began to settle in, we got out and observed the village from a distance. The village was indeed cordoned off, with long police tape surrounding it, and the bodies had already been moved to an open area beyond the tape.
Even from afar, I could see that most of those bodies were missing limbs; some even had their heads completely gone.
Li Zhisheng hid in a corner, looking at the eighteen bodies in the distance. "Wow, you really went all out. It's either missing arms or legs."
"Shut up! At a time like this, you still have the nerve to joke around? Show some respect for the dead; otherwise, they might come looking for you at night..." I said as I noticed two patrolling officers walking away from the village entrance. I quickly pulled Li Zhisheng along and slipped into the village.
We made our way back to where I had fought that Demon Sorcerer before. At that time, due to the darkness and my exhaustion, I hadn't paid attention to how much damage had been done to the village.
Now that I looked around, I saw four or five houses with varying degrees of damage; three or four others had turned into ruins, one of which was even sunk deep into a pit.
Li Zhisheng couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow! What on earth did you do that night? Is all this your handiwork?"
"Not entirely; back then, all I knew was to fight. If not for that, I'd be dead by now—who would care about all this? Anyway, let's see if there's any evidence that can prove I'm not the killer."
Just as I finished speaking, two patrolling officers walked over from in front of a house with flashlights in hand. I quickly pressed Li Zhisheng down while lowering my own body.
The two officers shone their flashlights around as one of them said, "I wonder who did this; they must be ruthless. If caught, they'll definitely face severe consequences." The other replied, "Yeah, who knows what kind of deep-seated grudge drove them to such extremes? They only found one backpack in a collapsed house; it might be something left behind by the killer..."
Hearing them mention the backpack reminded me that I hadn't had time to bring back the one I had taken with me earlier; now it had become evidence.
“Is it...?” Just as Li Zhisheng was about to speak, I quickly covered his mouth and gestured for him to be quiet, but it was too late; the police seemed to have already heard us. “Who’s there?!”
They shone their flashlights in our direction, and seeing this, I leaned back against the wall, pulling Li Zhisheng behind it with me. We pressed ourselves against the wall, not daring to make a sound.
“No one here; you must have heard wrong,” one of the officers said. “It could be some animal.” They searched around the front of the house for a moment before leaving.
Once I heard their footsteps fading away, I finally let out a sigh of relief. Remembering the backpack they had mentioned earlier, I thought about heading back to the area where the Red-Clad Woman had taken us to see if there were any clues left; after all, that was the scene of the incident.
With that in mind, I quietly made my way to the front of the collapsed building. Just as I was about to start searching, I suddenly stepped on something cylindrical and nearly lost my balance.
Fortunately, Li Zhisheng was right behind me and caught me just in time. Steadying myself, I picked up what had almost caused my fall and saw that it was a cane.
Li Zhisheng snatched the cane from my hands and examined it closely, stammering, “This... isn’t this the one belonging to the Death Apostle?!”
