I hurried home after buying groceries from the supermarket, and just as I reached the elevator, I heard a commotion coming from my apartment.
I stood at the door for a while, trying to understand what was happening. It turned out that Li Jin believed our current house was bought with the compensation money from the demolition of my father-in-law's old house.
"This house was bought by my dad! Hand it over to me right now, or I'll come here every day to make trouble until your family can't find peace!" Li Jin shouted in my living room, acting as if he were the owner, while my father-in-law stood silently beside him.
I stepped forward and scoffed, "Brother, are you dreaming? This house was bought by me and your brother. When did it become Dad's?"
I was truly baffled by how shameless some people could be. My husband and I purchased this apartment after we got married and had been living here ever since, while my father-in-law had always lived in his old house. For the past two years, he had been in the hospital, and I had been taking care of him.
Now Li Jin claimed this house was bought by my father-in-law and demanded we give it up for him. How could that be possible?
"I don't care! This house was bought with my dad's demolition money! You better hand it over to me, or I'll find someone to tear it down!" Li Jin said arrogantly.
"Brother, don't go too far! This house is ours; it has nothing to do with Dad!" I gritted my teeth in response.
"How can you prove that this house is yours?" Li Jin glared at me.
"We can show you the purchase contract and payment proof!" My husband finally spoke up.
"Hmph, so what? This house belongs to my dad; he can give it to whoever he wants!" Li Jin said dismissively.
I was speechless. How could there be such a rude and greedy person? During the years when my father-in-law was seriously ill, it was my husband and I who took care of him in the hospital; they hadn't even bothered to show up. Now that my father-in-law had just been discharged, they came to fight over property—it was truly disheartening.
"Brother, no matter what, this house was bought with our own money; you can forget about it!" I stated firmly.
I pulled out the purchase contract and payment proof from when we bought the house. These were all evidence that the house belonged to us!
After his expression shifted several times, Li Jin grinned and said, "In that case, give me the two-bedroom apartment in that school district that Dad got compensated for from the demolition of his old house! I want my share of the remaining money too."
The doubts in my heart were finally answered at that moment. No wonder the family that had been absent suddenly appeared and caused a ruckus in my house; it turned out they had long been plotting this.
“Ha! Brother, you might as well stop dreaming. This has nothing to do with you!” I couldn't help but roll my eyes and sneer.
“How does it not concern us? The house they tore down belonged to my dad, so naturally, we have a share of the money and the property!” Li Jin declared, his face full of righteous indignation.
The atmosphere in the living room was so tense it felt like it could freeze. I stood opposite Li Jingzhang and Li Jin, my anger bubbling like a volcano ready to erupt.
Li Jin wore a smug smile, while Li Jingzhang kept his head down, unable to meet my gaze.
“How can you be like this?” My voice trembled, not from fear, but from rage.
Li Jin shrugged, adopting a nonchalant attitude. “Jiahui, don’t get too worked up. This house originally belonged to Dad; he can give it to whoever he wants.”
I was so furious I laughed instead. “Property? Do you even have the right to talk about property? What have you done for this family over the years? Where were you when Father-in-law was sick?”
