The old man saw James lying on the ground, his heart tightening as his mind went blank, forgetting the strange red book beside him. His gaze was fixed solely on James's pale face, the tightly furrowed brow seemingly silently expressing pain. He hurried forward, knelt down, and gently patted James's shoulder, his voice trembling as he called out, "James, James, are you okay? Can you hear me?" 0

However, James showed no response, his body stiff like a shell drained of life, quietly lying on the cold floor. The old man's hands trembled, his heart racing as his eyes remained glued to James, feeling an ominous premonition rising within him. 0

He forced himself to calm down, his fingers trembling as they reached for James's wrist in an attempt to feel for a pulse. His fingers lightly pressed against James's cold skin, waiting for that familiar, faint heartbeat symbolizing life. Yet, seconds passed with nothing—no pulse, no signs of life, only coldness and silence. 0

The old man's heartbeat suddenly quickened, his mind swirling in chaos as fear washed over him like a tide. His fingers instinctively withdrew from James's wrist, shock and disbelief filling his eyes. 0

"He... has no pulse!" The old man's voice trembled with terror, filled with astonishment and incredulity. His words struck the elderly woman standing at the door like a bolt of lightning. 0

Upon hearing this, the elderly woman shuddered, her face turning pale in an instant. She couldn't accept this reality—James was... gone? This was unimaginable. Standing by the door with her mind blank, it took her a few seconds to react. She hurriedly pulled out the phone her grandson had given her, her fingers shaking as she anxiously pressed the emergency call button. 0

But her hands trembled violently; panic filled her heart as the sound of the buttons pressed sharply in the quiet air. She intended to call for an ambulance but struggled to see the screen clearly due to her poor eyesight and anxiety. In her flustered state, she pressed the numbers without even being sure if she dialed correctly. 0

"Quick... call an ambulance!" The old man's voice echoed in her ears, laced with urgency and fear. His eyes remained fixed on James's pale face, filled with dread and helplessness. He couldn't accept this reality; he couldn't comprehend how James could suddenly have no pulse—everything was happening so abruptly and strangely. 0

With trembling hands, the elderly woman finally got through. However, when she held the phone to her ear, it wasn't the voice of the emergency center that came through but a familiar voice saying, "Hello? Mary, is that you?" 0

Her heart sank; due to her poor eyesight and nerves, she had dialed the wrong number and reached a friend instead. "Oh, I'm sorry! Wrong number!" she exclaimed in a panic before hanging up quickly. Her fingers shook again as she pressed the emergency call button once more; this time she was more careful but still struggled to control her trembling hands and rapid breathing. 0

Hearing that she had dialed incorrectly made the old man even more anxious. "Hurry! James might... be in trouble!" His voice was hoarse and filled with helplessness; he didn't know if James was unconscious or... had already lost his life forever. James's complexion was frighteningly pale as if some strange force had drained all vitality from him. 0

As chaos ensued around them—the elderly woman anxiously speaking on the phone while the old man stayed by James's side with worry etched on his face—suddenly, James took a deep breath sharply, his voice low and heavy as if his lungs were suddenly filled with air again. This unexpected sound startled the old man; he turned just in time to see James sit up abruptly as if resurrected from death itself. 0

James's eyes suddenly opened wide as he took a deep breath, a look of surprise crossing his face, as if he were bewildered by everything before him. His chest heaved violently, and the sound of his breathing echoed clearly in the quiet room. He looked around in confusion, his gaze landing on the elderly couple, seemingly unable to comprehend why they were in his home. 0

The two stood to the side, utterly astonished. The old woman's phone nearly slipped from her grasp, her face turning pale in an instant as her eyes widened in terror, fixated on James. Her lips trembled as she suddenly screamed, "Ah! A zombie!" 0

Her voice was high-pitched and sharp, reverberating throughout the room like a burst of fear. The old woman instinctively took a few steps back, her eyes filled with panic, as if James, who had just returned from the brink of death, was not a professor but a terrifying creature. 0

"A zombie?!" The old man immediately widened his eyes and turned to his wife, frustration and urgency etched on his face. "You fool! Look closely! It's the professor, not some zombie!" He furrowed his brow, clearly upset, and reached out to grasp the old woman's arm in an attempt to calm her down. 0

The old woman remained shaken, staring at James as if everything before her was surreal. 0

The old man quickly turned back to focus on James, a hint of unease in his eyes. He bent slightly forward and cautiously asked, "James, are you okay? What happened? Just now… you had no pulse…" 0

James sat on the floor, his eyes unfocused and blank as he stared at the elderly couple before him. His gaze was hollow, as if he had not fully come to his senses yet; his mind was a chaotic blur. Thoughts moved slowly through his head, as if something had stirred them up, preventing him from immediately responding to the situation at hand. He silently gazed at the old man and woman, his lips moving slightly but no words came out, as if he were struggling to comprehend what had transpired. 0

James's breathing remained unsteady, and he trembled slightly; although his complexion was no longer as pale as before, he still appeared quite weak. His gaze swept over the couple as if their presence momentarily baffled him. He did not understand why he had collapsed or why this elderly couple was in his home. His mind was clouded with confusion, with only a vague image of that book lingering deep within. 0

The old man observed James's dazed expression, his brow furrowing tighter with concern and worry. He reached out and gently patted James's shoulder in a soothing manner, urgency lacing his tone. "Professor, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Should we call an ambulance?" 0
