After discussing with Liu Jian, we reached an agreement. We would no longer mention the topic of breaking up; I wanted to decide whether to end things or not. Liu Jian said that if I wanted to break up, he would respect my decision, but if I chose to stay, he would do everything he could to take care of me. I told him I wouldn’t leave before the outcome was clear. And so we settled on that.
For me, this was just fine.
In June, Yongmei sent me a message. She said she was about to undergo surgery and asked if I could go to her house to pick up a few bags for her. Yongmei's tone was somewhat helpless as she said, "The doctor said the chances of success are very low, but there’s no other option."
I agreed to help Yongmei, telling her I would take care of the bags and bring them to her after her surgery. Before heading to Yongmei's house, I suddenly thought of Yonghe Palace and decided on a whim to ask for a prayer bead bracelet and a talisman, hoping to bring some good luck to Yongmei.
I handed the prayer beads and talisman to Yongmei's mother. Her eyes were red, clearly worried about her daughter's surgery outcome. I took the heavy bag containing the prayer beads and bags from her hands.
"Auntie, don’t worry; I will take good care of these bags."
"Good child, thank you."
Liu Jian didn’t accompany me; he had been at home learning how to create a small program game. The game he was working on was a pixel-style mini-game where players had to nurture a plant called "Cute Pet Grass," collecting sunlight each day to feed it. After completing the game, players could exchange it for some reward items.
Liu Jian said that once I leveled the game up to twenty, he would fulfill his promise and take me out to that high-end restaurant I had always wanted to visit but never dared spend money on.
"Sounds good."
"Then I’ll have to work hard."
"Yeah, I'll be waiting for you."
Yongmei's surgery failed.
The first to receive the news was Liu Jian. Yongmei privately informed him that her surgery had failed due to severe abdominal adhesions. She didn’t tell me directly but had Liu Jian relay the message.
“Yongmei asked me to tell you that she plans to give up treatment, go traveling, and enjoy the time she has left,” he said. “She also handed over the position of administrator for the patient support group to you, hoping you can help more patients.”
“She said… to take good care of yourself.”
I remained silent for a long while before gently nodding. Yongmei still appeared optimistic in the support group, encouraging others, sharing her insights, and providing help as much as she could. But I knew that the failure of her surgery meant that her condition could no longer be cured.
We went to visit Yongmei. Her spirits seemed much better than before.
“I’ve decided to give up. Instead of just enduring here, I’d rather travel, see different sights, and enjoy good food. That way, my time in this world won’t be in vain,” she said.
“Don’t look at me like that; I’ve really come to terms with it.”
“The only thing I’m worried about now is my mom. She’s getting older and isn’t in good health. I’m really afraid she won’t be able to cope after I’m gone.”
“So, Xiao Wan, can you do me a favor?”
“Just say it; if it’s something I can do, I will definitely help you.”
“After I’m gone, could you visit my mom often? Just talk with her so she won’t feel too lonely.”
“Sure.”
“Thank you.”
“No need to thank me.”
“And you two, take care of yourselves.”
“Mm.”
Liu Jian and I said our goodbyes to Yongmei.
On the way back, neither of us spoke.
We both knew that Yongmei's condition had reached a point where we had to face it, and we also understood that our future wouldn't be bright. Yet, neither of us voiced those thoughts.
