After transporting the Perfume from Tongzhou to the residence of Marshal Zhang, his father granted him a rare holiday.
At that time, while the outside world was engulfed in war and smoke, Tongzhou, being Marshal Zhang's territory and at the heart of his dominion, remained a peaceful oasis, tranquil and serene.
Shen Yichen was overjoyed, spending his days exploring with Yaxin.
They would either go fishing by the lake, where he focused intently on the water with his fishing rod while Yaxin quietly watched beside him, occasionally handing him bait; or they would stay overnight in a mountain cabin, sitting outside at night to admire the starry sky as he gently wrapped his arm around her shoulder; sometimes they even left Tongzhou to visit the seaside she longed for, where she excitedly ran along the beach as he smiled and chased after her.
However, he could never quite understand Yaxin's thoughts.
She often wore a smile, but behind that smile seemed to hide endless secrets. Her eyes reflected shyness, and her smile carried a deep sorrow, as if shrouded in a layer of gloom.
He thought she had not yet recovered from her recent miscarriage and felt a pang of sympathy for her, showering her with even more care. It was only later that he learned it was not solely due to that reason.
On that fateful afternoon, under bright sunshine, he eagerly took Yaxin to a Foreign Restaurant for Western cuisine.
Inside the restaurant, soft music flowed gently through the air.
Yet Yaxin had no appetite; she absentmindedly sipped on some juice before gradually showing signs of fatigue. Her eyes dimmed as she leaned slightly against the back of her chair.
Seeing this, he felt a twinge of concern and immediately stopped eating, hastily accompanying her home.
As soon as they entered the door, they were met by the butler rushing over with an anxious expression. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he urgently said to him, “There’s been an issue with that batch of Perfume.”
He then learned that after the Perfume was delivered to Marshal's Mansion, the Grand Duke joyfully gifted it to third Concubine.
third Concubine was enamored with it and eagerly applied it to herself. At first, there seemed to be no issue, but before long, she realized that the fragrance began to change. The once enchanting scent seemed cursed by a demon; no matter what she tried, she could not rid herself of the strange odor, which eventually turned into a foul stench.
Marshal Zhang looked at the beautiful woman before him but could not approach due to the terrible smell. Enraged, he immediately ordered the the Shen Family to investigate the cause and find a way to eliminate the odor from third Concubine.
"The master has already left Tongzhou for Marshal's Mansion. He asked you, young master, to find out where the problem occurred," the butler said with a trembling voice.
He nodded gravely and instructed his servants to take Yaxin back to her room while he anxiously rushed back to the factory.
Graceful Belle was the signature Perfume of the the Su Family. His father had carefully confirmed the formula, which bore Yaxin's father's handwriting. Logically, there should be no mistakes; thus, the problem likely lay within the production process.
However, he tirelessly investigated every detail in the factory for three days and nights without rest.
His eyes were weary yet resolute as he personally checked each step of the process, leaving no detail overlooked. He even meticulously weighed and examined the amounts of ingredients used, but in the end, he found nothing and still could not determine the cause.
Just as he was at his wits' end and filled with despair, someone from home rushed in with a panicked expression, their voice trembling as they reported, "The young mistress is missing!"
Upon hearing this, Shen Yichen felt as if struck by lightning and frantically rushed back home. His mind was a whirlwind of anxiety as he raced along.
When he returned home, he was met with an empty room—cold and lifeless.
He stood dazed in the center of the room, looking around until he finally confirmed that Yaxin had indeed vanished.
Chang Ma had long since retired, and now no one was taking care of Yaxin, so naturally, no one knew when she had quietly left.
Even more shocking was that along with her disappearance, the gold and silver jewelry gifted to her by the the Shen Family had vanished as well.
Accompanying this dreadful news was the fact that his father had ultimately failed to uncover the foul cause behind third Concubine's demise. In a fit of rage, Marshal Zhang executed him without mercy and ordered the the Shen Family that if they could not find the reason within seven days, their fate would be the same as his father's, putting their lives in jeopardy.
Shen Yichen sat down in despair, his mind blank, and the item he had been tightly gripping slipped from his fingers.
He looked down to see a recipe that had become slightly damp from his grip.
His gaze was vacant as he stared at the words on the paper; the once strong black characters gradually blurred before his eyes, all transforming into "why," swirling like a ghost before him.
Suddenly, his attention was drawn to a corner of the paper that had curled up, where there were words.
He slowly picked it up and examined it closely. Written in a color similar to the paper were five words: "Father, I'm sorry."
The character for "no" was written in a single stroke, reflecting Yaxin's usual writing style.
